I agree that JV needs more 4th quarter minutes. However, if we keep winning, Casey will definitely keep sticking to his plan.

Hayes plays with the second unit in the 2nd, in the 3rd and to start the 4th like most backup role playing big men do. Most coaches have their standard minute distribution and rotations in order to keep a role players job consistent. Many coaches do this in order to maintain a players role, so just because Hans goes down, doesn't mean you crank up JV's minutes, instead you re-distribute to Hayes.

FWIW:

1st q: 8.6mpg (Lowry and DD only players to log more minutes in the 1st q)
2nd q: 5.9mpg (Lowry and DD only starters to log more, 2nd unit time)
3rd q: 8.1mpg (Lowry and DD only players to log more minutes)
4th q: 4.1mpg (lowest of all the starters)

The averages add up to more than his game averages as it only considers quarters he's stepped on the floor to calculate the average.

Outside of the 4th, I don't see where you could get him any extra burn based upon his current minute distribution and conditioning.

Hayes played 17 min and JV 24. JV could easily play more and Hayes less. Goes for TH too. Neither should be getting over 10 min and JV should be getting close to 30

Development time is over kiddies, winning is the priority. We've been a perennial lose for so long fans don't know how to take all this winning.

Before you guys annoint Zach Lowe and his girlfriend (Koreen) the coach of the Raptors, take a look at how many of our games have been won in the 4th quarter....often with strong defense and the helter skelter opportunities on offense that come from it.

Winning is development for JV as well, even if he's winning from the bench.

Stop with this **** of earning minutes. Just stop. He had 27 pts and 12 rebounds in a game against Suns. If that doesnt earn you some minutes in the 4th then what does? He certainly played better than others of the starters and yet ended up rotting on the bench.

So stop this bull excuse "Earn the minutes". Its not about Earning its about the mental block of Casey. In the end it will bite Raptors in the ass as playoffs contribution from him wont be reliable at all specially in late games as he isnt used to play any minutes come the 4th doesnt matter if its matchup or how he plays good or bad he always sits.

Jonas wasn't closing out on Horford mid-range jumpers. They went small against Atlanta to take away that shot. They weren't finding Horford in the post, so Jonas' advantage was somewhat diminished

Horford scored 6 buckets on Hayes in amatter of couple of minutes and then 4 more on Amir. Jonas did better defense on Horford than those two. At least he wasn't scoring as rapidly and with such an ease.

If you are referring to the Atlanta game:
http://popcornmachine.net/gf?date=20141126&game=TORATL

Haye's minutes were strictly played when the 2nd unit was on the floor. JV logged 10+ minutes in the 1st, 6min in the second coming back into the game when the 2nd unit sat back down, and 7+ minutes with the starters again in the 3rd before the 2nd unit came back in.

So you are advocating for messing up the 2nd unit chemistry (2nd unit offense goes through Lou and GV with PPat P&P or P&R) for the sake of an extra 2-3 minutes for Val in the 2nd & 3rd quarters?

Yes, the second unit chemistry from a player who has been playing the last three games. Really TH minutes should be cut for JV too .

This.

Immediate success. What about in the larger picture? I don't even care about where we seed, its all about the playoffs and I want Jonas out there in meaningful minutes.

But Jonas isnt getting the minutes on the most important period. Do you think he will be ready in playoffs? I have my doubts despite him coming well in last years playoffs because all that bench sitting in 4th will hit his confidence a lot when the most important moments will come.

I think JV is on the right course right now. People forget he is only 22 and most bigs in the league take time to develop. And yes we do need him to develop and become an important piece of our future. But right now do you we really need to be messing things up and takin us off our rythme? I think DC needs to start putting him more during blowout games or ones where he matches up favourably to opposing bigs. Its a long season and people need to have more patience with JV and know that just as his touches have started to come compared to earlier seasons so will his defensive rotation and overall bb IQ.

I'll give Casey the benefit of the doubt since i usually criticize him for his short comings. I would love JV to get more minutes but you can't argue with our record. Centers usually take time to develop. Hopefully, JV can pick it up after the all star break.

no, the end result is the overall development of your organization. The Spurs don't have any problem sitting out games in the regular season, as long as you make the playoffs, thats when it really counts. These games won't mean squat all anymore besides who creams the 7th or 8th in the 1st round. NOW is the time to practice a little bit while the games don't matter.

It's not like playing JV in crunch time guarantees us a loss...

The kid wants it bad. Chances are he (within the team) delivers. Throw the guy a bone.

Defense earns mins with Casey. Especially at that position. He's developing JV by putting a ladder in front of him and asking him to climb it. That is not a bad thing.

Especially for a big.

Further, Chuck Hayes has been awesome in the 4th. Awesome. Do you not think JV is learning something from watching him?

No you learn nothing from watching. All it comes from your own experience and putting what you saw in practice which never happens cause Val doesnt play in crunch moments.

And please don't make Hayes like he is some kind of defensive god. He had good defensive games against Grizzs and a couple more but he struggles too. Last game against Hawks last quarter he was terrible on Horford. Horford in that quarter scored 10 points (part of the blame goes on Amir too). If Val would have been this bad at defending Horford in the quarters before he would have dropped close to 40 on us.

Val suck on help defense and is slow on pick and roll but individual defense is pretty good actually.

I knew the moment Hayes did well against Gasol that his minutes would skyrocket. I mean, as long as the Raptors are winning, we can look past it, but Hayes is not a player who should be getting anywhere near 20 minutes in a game that isn't a complete one-sided blowout.

You'll be eating those words when Hayes is ECF MVP with his assortment of runners and floaters
