I agree we can't just go get a free agent for 3.5 mill ho will give us what Mo gives us this season. That's why I said trade. If some other team is high enough on Speights to give us something that's a more long term value to the team, I could be interested.

I'm one of the few that if given a decision to trade Barnes or Green... I would keep Barnes.
Barnes isn't the better player now...but I feel Draymond has hit about as close to his ceiling as he will get.... And that's still just a role player.

I agree with the premise of not falling in love with guys. I don't expect ant trade of Warriors role players that is likely to help. Not going to get a high pick (or any lottery pick for that matter) for Green or Speights or Barnes from a bad team.
Likely only get a role player from another decent team, and I don't think that would particularly help. Hard to fit someone in this season, and likely hard to do in the off-season.
Suppose you get a solid 3 & D guy for the bench. That would be nice to have, but I think you lose more giving up Green than that would add.

Mirotic/Gibson for Green plus big fat salary dump? Why would Chicago do that? Even if they like Green more than Gibson, the difference would be great enough to justify that deal. Then they'd have the same problem the Warriors would have when it came time to resign him.
Or, if you wait till after the season to do a sign and trade, then the Warriors would be taking on a big salary without a dump. Since the premise is that Warriors can't afford it, how would that work?

I see where you're coming from, but Draymond's market value might still be lower than his actual value.
Either way, like FNQ said, our chemistry is phenomenal and Draymond is a huge part of that. He's giving us everything Ekpe Udoh gave us times 10. You keep him.
Speights is the guy you want to sell high on.

Re: Take three deep breaths but..Is it time to trade Draymon
I don't see how anyone would talk about selling high on Speights when he makes so little but is having huge impact?
If we had a glaring area of need, then sure, but we don't....we are getting the high value out of the relatively low dollar hit. It's what you hope for in your role players.

If we were building for ie. 2015/16 I would probably agree with moving Green.
But we're not.
Sure, he's just a role player. Robert Horry, Steve Kerr, Dennis Rodman, James Posey and Byron Scott were all role players too.
You might be unwittingly trading away a Larry O'Brien along with Dray. Don't go there.

We're 14-2, why the hell are we talking about trading players?

Trade the over-hyped scrub (Barnes) before trading someone with actual value.

Sorry that sentence was confusing, CHI couldn't be salary dump destination. Didn't mean to meld the two options one was a potential trade. I don't know what a salary dump type deal/ team would entail just threw it out their.

Re: Take three deep breaths but..Is it time to trade Draymon
I think I'll give some feedback into some of the opinions I've seen so far. So here's my personal opinion.
1. Green is getting paid. In a world where Alec Burkes get's paid 12 mil. and the cap expected to skyrocket. Teams are going to be willing to pay a defensive stud who's also an extremely deft passer. That coupled with the fact that teams are going to think they have a shot at stealing him (because the warriors cap situation) is going to create some serious suiters.
2. Keep in mind this is all hypothetical but...Like this team or not I think we're going to need to make a trade to avoid the tax. And in my opinion there are 3 obvious guys. Barnes, Lee and Iggy. Here's my logic on why instead of trading those we should at the very least put out some feelers on Draymond this coming offseason.
Lee isn't worth trading just for a salary dump at this point. He's worth more to us.
Barnes isn't worth trading either imo. His value has deteriorated to the point where...It's not worth giving up a young skilled athlete on a rookie deal for a couple of knicknacks.
Iggy's the obvious choice imo. He's owed long term cash and he's now somewhat expendable with the Livingston/Barnes/Green trio. So he's really the guy we should look to trade.
But here's the thing...Am I really the only one who feels uncomfortable paying Draymond 11 mil a year and that's if we're lucky??? Yeah he's terrific but that's a lot for a glorified super sub who's had knee issues. And if we could get real value for him (which we can), shouldn't we at least consider selling high? What if Cleveland panics about Love or we could get Ryan Anderson or Nik Mirotic??? What if we could get big time value for him if we coupled him with Iggy?
GSW probably does't think about it because they're obsessed with being the next "spurs" but the logic is their. And GSW should at the very least consider it.

Re: Take three deep breaths but..Is it time to trade Draymon
DUMB.
This is the kind of trade that breaks a team spirit in the middle of its quest for a title.
Kerr said Draymond Green is the vocal leader in the locker room. Not Steph. Not Bogut. Draymond Green.
This thread is sad. When it's time to negotiate pay with him, you sit down and negotiate. You don't trade away a good player because you think he might ask for too much money down the road.

Re: Take three deep breaths but..Is it time to trade Draymon
I think if you have the opportunity to win a championship... you try to win that championship. Thats what its all about. The mock trades, the draft threads, the "asset" management... its all towards the goal of winning a championship. Right now, that means keeping Draymond Green.
We have an opportunity. We go for it. Opportunities don't just waltz in every couple years. I'm 37 years old. I wasn't alive the last time the Warriors won the championship. I don't even think we've been a contender since i've been alive. Screw the LT, screw the "getting value" crap, we're rolling and with a legit shot at a title. I could give a f!@#$@% about next years luxury tax when we have a chance THIS year.

I don't think Dennis Rodman counts as a role player considering he's probably the greatest defender & rebounder who's ever played the game.

Yeah you're right, the 22 year old that just went 9-9 and doesn't play in the fourth quarter is so over hyped. Iggy and Lee would be the players you get rid of if you're building a team to contend for a decade. Lee is looking like he doesn't fit with the new look Warriors-- at least not as a starter-- and Iggy will be a full-on scrub in two years, those are the players you look to trade if anyone. Certainly not the 22 year old player who has yet to enter his prime who threatens a double-double every night from the three spot.

the hardest part about winning is it leaves fans of a historically bad franchise with no tinkering options that makes sense. we are 14-2 and a serious contender for the championship. This isn't Nba 2k15. EVERYONE on this team is a factor in fueling this winning culture and team. You dont change crap on a Win-Now contender ---- unless your aim is to send every player on the team the absolute Wrong message.

Re: Take three deep breaths but..Is it time to trade Draymon
I think the Rockets tried too hard to game the financial and performance aspect of basketball and they didn't fare well in last year's playoffs. The Warriors have exceptional team chemistry right now and all playing styles and roles mesh. Think about that article about how so many players are unwilling to become 6th men, and we have guys like Iguodala coming off the bench and Lee will probably come off the bench right now. If Bogut has to go out for stretches this season, Lee will make a great small ball 5, provided we still have Draymond.
And if we want to cash in high on Draymond, who do we get? Ryan Anderson is literally not an upgrade, and Taj Gibson is essentially Chicago's version of Draymond Green - excellent intangibles who has great chemistry with his team.
There are very few Power Forwards in the NBA I'd trade Draymond Green for. There are the no brainers we'd take in a minute for Draymond Green (Aldridge, Love, Griffin, etc.,) but those guys obviously won't be traded. Everyone else is sort of a wash. Zach Randolph is technically better than Draymond but how does he fit with the Warriors? The only semi-tradeable person I'd definitely deal Draymond for is Ibaka, but OKC is definitely not trading him for anyone on our team not called Stephen Curry or Klay Thompson.

We were one of the softest teams in the NBA a few years ago and you thinking about trading one of our toughest players away? I don't think so. I want to continue to watch this guy in a Warriors uniform punking Blake Griffin for many years to come.
Return to Golden State Warriors
