Arians: Cards inquired about trading for Alex Smith in 2013

Post#1 » by ChrisPozz » Wed Dec 3, 2014 5:01 pm

Alex Marvez:

BruceArians says @AZCardinals inquired about trade w/ @49ers in 2013 for QB Alex Smith. Talks of potential in-division trade went nowhere

Arians quote specifically from the Sirius XM interview:

"I would've loved to have had him. I've always been a fan of his. No, I don't think they would've ever entertained that trade to us. We tried. We actually tried but they said no quickly. Early in his career we played him in San Francisco and I watched him warm up and as a man he has a cannon for an arm, he's athletic as heck. There can't be anything wrong with this kid. I knew he was really smart coming out and it was a matter of reps and staying within one system which he never got to do. That's what kills young QBs."

I heard that this morning and remember the cards having some interest there during the process.

No way we were trading within the division. Not even sure they would have traded him within the conference.

Cannon arm?

Arians has been an aggressive play caller, with a lot of deep shots to WRs bailing them out of some close games.

How does that square with Alex who hasn't thrown a TD to a WR yet this year?

I think cannon of an arm was a clear embellishment, because Smith doesn't have the velocity in his arm strength (all QBs can throw 60-70 yards, it just loses velocity and let's defenders catch up if velocity isn't there).

However, much of Smith's lack of deep ball is his hesitancy to throw them - that could be due to lack of arm strength and him understanding his arm, but it's mostly being risk adverse, knowing most shots by any QB don't work out.

As far as the lack of WR TDs, that's not an arm strength issue. I mean, QBs, including Smith in the past, have thrown 5 yard TD passes to WRs. 30+ even, 40+. Plus, some QBs have thrown five yard passes that the WRs take for 80 yards. Hardly an arm strength issue. Smith has had WRs get tackled on the one or two yard line. Not an arm strength issue there.

From what I read, we just hung up on them. I giggled a little at that

For those of you old enough to remember, back in 1983, the Rams drafted Eric Dickerson and Wendall Tyler became expendable. The Rams traded Wendall Tyler to the 49ers. Walsh thought they were nuts. Tyler ended up rushing for 1,260 yards and a 5YPA. Was a big part of the 1984 succeess and Super Bowl. Never trade in a division.

Yep. Never trade major positions within the division. If we can lose to Stanton with Arians' coaching and defense and barely beat the Chiefs, we could lose to them with Smith, even without Arians deep game. Arians and their defense are no joke. We'll beat Stanton this time.

Sending him to Kansas City where we face him only once per four years (and we beat them) is no big deal. Playing him twice per year where we could lose any given Sunday with a better chance just invites the trolls.

Return to San Francisco 49ers
