I wouldn't have mind that contract..
It's a double whammy for Jays fans.
1) Melky signed for just 3 years and fits in perfectly under our policy
2) 99% likely we don't use that 15.2 million to improve our roster some more ..

If finalized, the White Sox have retooled their team quite nicely.

With Saunders already on board the draft pick is worth more than Cabrera at $45 million. Spend that $15 million elsewhere and take the pick, which we need.

Maybe Trollney was right about him not liking the turf. 3/45 doesn't seem all that unreasonable considering the contracts that are flying around these days.

But we are contending now though. Saunders could have moved to CF so that all the pressure wouldn't be put on Pompey. But w/e we aren't done with this roster obviously.

Not an unreasonable contract at all. Actually Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com, reports its actually between 42 M and 43.5 M (14-14.5 M a year). I would have actually made that same offer to Melky and brought him back to Toronto.

https://twitter.com/JesseSanchezMLB/sta ... 6862353408

Obviously with the Jays payroll about to be in the 137-40 M range, there was not enough room for Cabrera, since otherwise i am pretty sure AA would have brought him back also. Rogers has a payroll figure, and obviously the Jays did not have room for him.

Bottom line is with Lind replaced by Smoak, and Melky replaced in LF by Saunders, this has team has regressed in two positions, while upgrading two other ones. Melky was a very productive player, and I still have question marks in the bottom 4 of the lineup- Saunders, Smoak, Pompey, and second base (i.e. Izturis most likely). Hopefully these guys can have a decent year since as of right now- they are big question marks.

Yeah, Rogers will spend it. Just not on the Jays.

Very disappointed the Jays couldn't/wouldn't make this happen at these numbers and years for a player that not only produced last year but also publicly voiced his preference to return. Even more so considering the poopoo platter that "replaces" him.

For those looking for the "silver lining" of draft picks, that's a downer too. Chicago's own 1st pick is protected (8) and their second rounder is already off to the Yankees for the Robertson signing. So the Jays get a supplemental pick at the end of the first round plus Chicago's 3rd round pick. Pardon me if I don't do any celebratory cartwheels.

Typical Jays BS. How is that contract not reasonable? How is Saunders the friggin answer?

Why cant they ever go all in instead of goin 60% in?

Another mediocre season ahead folks nothing to see here

I too could have lived with that contract, but I'm not upset to see him go. Even sans-tumor his mobility was shot and there is a real concern that he'll breakdown further in the near-future. If he does, that money is a lot to spend on a DH without a lot of power.

I'm comfortable moving forward with Saunders, Melky's pick, and hopefully some more money to allocate elsewhere.
Nick Nurse recounting his first meeting with Kawhi:
“We could have gone forever. (Raptors management) kept knocking on the door and I was like, ‘A couple more minutes.’ Because we were really into it."

If they don't use Melky's saved money, i don't see how anyone could be happy seeing him leave town.

Chance's are they are done spending larger type money as we have seen similar dollar players that could have helped in McCarthy and Liriano sign else where already.

I'd rather have Saunders (especially at his price) instead. For one reason or another, Melky had become very overrated by the fans here.

Saunders is a horrible CF defensively, so that wouldn't have been ideal. Honestly, the better guy to bring back out of Melky and Colby would have been Colby. But that clearly isn't going to happen.

I'm OK with this as long as we spend money else where

$14-$15 for Melky is too much when you have bullpen holes to fill. Russell Martin can bat 2nd, offense is ok.... Pitching is more of a need at this point then a LF'er with injuries in his track record

We get the sox third round pick since the Yankees get their second round pick and their first is protected...
