Are the Hawks lucky that they didn't get Deng?
Its been about 20 games into the season. The Hawks have been winning. The Heat are struggling. Deng makes more than Millsap and is averaging 14ppg. DeMarre is averaging 12ppg.
Would the Hawks be better talent wise and financially with Deng or are the Hawks lucky that he didn't accept the offer?

Idk if it's fit/chemistry issues or what but Deng has not looked like the the player he was last season. However, I've only watched like 3-4 heat games so far this season so I may be off here. Anyways, yes ok glad we didn't give him that contract or a contract for that matter. DeMarre has improved this season and is playing great for us.

hawks are VERY lucky deng didnt accept our offer. dmc and thabo are playing at a high level. I love thabo's game. also we still have cap space because deng rejected us. we could be "buyers" at the trade deadline for an additional piece.
I think denver will look to unload either or both randy foye and jj hickson two expiring for picks. If i'm right hawks will have cap space to get those guys if ferry and coach buds decide they want too. personally, id take both.

I liked Deng but not at the money he was asking.
At this point Id rather have DMC than Deng. Maybe not as much scoring potential but hes more consistent and plays great defense, hustles

Ya, i also remember being against the Deng signing. I don't like signing players on the decline to big contracts. I was more on the Greg Monroe camp.
But the way the Pistons have been playing, i'm really cooling off on Monroe.

While I admit that I'm hardly one to discuss how the players on MIA look, from the numbers I'm looking at, he's playing at approximately his career norms with the exception of minutes (because Thibs runs his main guys into the ground year after year). His Pre-36's are in line with his career norms and his shot chart looks good too. In terms of defense, opposing SF's are going for an 11.7 PER against him which is elite.
Now, I really didn't want Deng in FA - possibly due to the fact that I wanted a "sexier" signing after dealing Lou. Even though I was really happy he signed elsewhere, the fact is he would have been a very good fit here. We were in the market for defensive wings (Thabo, Bazemore) and we were so thin at the wing that if Demarre or Korver went down, we were really hurting - we went with 2-3 PGs lineups and/or Cartier Martin (want to see something sad - check out Martin's numbers this year). Deng is an elite defensive SF and he can actually score a little bit as well. If we would have signed him instead of Thabo, I think we'd be in 1st place in the East right now. If there was a concern about his signing, it would be his relationship with Ferry and the rest of our FO right now...

I don't think he would have hurt us. DF cleared cap space to make a move like that.
Personally, I'd rather have gotten Gasol, but I don't think we put enough effort into that recruitment.
I like the Thabo and Baze signings though; neither have hurt us for the cost.
While Deng nor Gasol are A level free agents, an A is still what this team needs to beat multiple teams in a 7 game series. Where we are today, no major move will be made with this organization influx.

I would have loved Deng at 8 million though.

Deng, Hayward, nor Parsons were worth there asking prices but the Hawks were not lucky because they made a stupid move by trading Lou and Bebe for nothing worth noting in return to clear space to go after such guys.

The Heat and Hawks play too different systems so who knows how Deng would have fit in and his role in Bud's scheme.
DeMarre is definitely a bargin for his production.
From what I've seen of Deng over the years, his offensive output probably would be better than DeMarre's but Deng has probably peaked as a player being in the league for 10 years. Meanwhile, this is only DeMarre's 2nd year as a starter and he's improved his 3 point shot so he can only get better.

Agreed. Deng's presence wouldn't have been a killer. He could still be a key contributor for this team, especially in the playoffs when the game slows down. His experience would have been a boon to our team, and at 29 he still has a couple of good seasons left in him.

I believe Thabo will be that guy in the playoffs that will be a key contributor to this team during the playoffs.
I'm interested to see how a Teague/Thabo/DeMarre backcourt would work against the WAS's, CLE's, TOR's in the playoffs since they got more than one wing players that can take over the game.

I am 100% confident now that if Deng was on this team, he wouldn't be doing any better than what Demar is doing right now.
Deng has decline offensively while Demar is on the up swing, and defensively Demar is better and has more energy

How is carrol a better defender? There is nothing that justifies that claim lol.
