@SF49ers_report: 49ers release Ray McDonald - ESPN http://t.co/ziAgqrxUm2

The San Francisco 49ers announced Wednesday that they have released defensive lineman Ray McDonald.

"This is about a pattern of poor behavior," Baalke, the team's GM, said Wednesday.

"We expect a lot from our players, hold them accountable for their actions," he said.

Baalke said that CEO Jed York and coach Jim Harbaugh were involved in the decision. Baalke says the 49ers notified the NFL office of the allegations against McDonald, saying, "This is a team decision.''

Earlier in the day, local law authorities said they were investigating McDonald on suspicion of sexual assault.

San Jose Police Department Sgt. Heather Randol said an area hospital notified police late Tuesday night that a woman was seeking treatment and that detectives had searched McDonald's San Jose home.

"The victim alleged she was possibly sexually assaulted a day prior," Randol said. "Based on preliminary investigation, detectives secured a search warrant and served it at the alleged suspect's residence in San Jose."

No arrests have been made, nor have charges been filed.

The NFL confirmed the alleged incident is covered by its new conduct policy. The league will conduct its own investigation but will not interfere with law enforcement.

This investigation marks the second time in recent months that McDonald has been the subject of a police investigation.

Last month, the Santa Clara County district attorney's office announced that it declined to file charges against McDonald in a domestic violence investigation stemming from his Aug. 31 arrest.

Prosecutors cited conflicting versions of what happened, a lack of verifiable eyewitnesses and a lack of cooperation by the alleged victim, McDonald's fianceƩ.

McDonald had played all season despite pressure on the 49ers to bench him.

Prior to McDonald's release, NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said the league was looking into the matter.

After they went through the PR disaster with the domestic violence incident, I can see why they don't want to go through another situation like that again with McDonald.

The season from hell continues!

Thought they might at least treat it like the first one with due process. But they may know more than us and are seeing the pattern. All the bad PR continues for this team which is why the probably felt the need to just cut him instantly.

McDonald was playing real solid football as of late too. Oh well time to move on.

Tank will get lots of reps these last 2 games which is the best part about this. The dead money being the crappy part and the situation itself.

Starting to think no way Justin smith would wanna think about playing again after this crazy year. Only hope is he will wAnna chase the ring and honor that last year.

His release, Gore's and Hyde's unavailability are putting a perfect cap on this kidney stone of a season.

Some teams needing a DE / DT this offseason are celebrating. They can now get a really good DE for peanuts. :(

Possible silver lining:

Now the Niners are more likely to be interested in Ndamokung Suh?

No. Tank can finally start.

Our starting ends next year might be Tank and Dial if the Cowboy hangs up his spurs.

I'm not so sure that's a good plan.

I like that plan a lot more than breaking the bank for Suh. Here's to hoping The Cowboy returns.

You don't like the idea of Suh & JSmith (or Tank) in front of Aldon, Lynch, Willis & Bowman?

I don't think people realize how good Ray Macdonald is. Going from RayMac to Dial is a HUGE hit to the only good thing about the Niners (the defense). Settling for cheap is what solidified the Niners' mediocre status this season. Looks what Revis did for the Pats' defense. The Niners can easily afford Suh now that RayMac is gone (and Brooks will soon be gone too). Hell Kaepernick will be gone if they're smart. DL like Suh don't come along very often in FA. Trent Baalke needs to drop the Andy Reid thing & get this guy.

I don't see Suh signing up to play anything other than 43 DT.

I obviously am not happy that somebody was hurt allegedly by him.

But when I first heard that he was released due to his incident, I immediately feared that it was in reference to the previous incident (sort of like how Ray Rice incident changed). It appeared that we looked away until the playoffs chances were gone and then we took a stand when we couldn't make the playoffs. It seemed two sided.

But now reading that there was a new incident, that clearly shows that it wasn't the case that we were just okay with him as long as we were benefiting from him. Again, that makes me feel better about the organization than the alternative but not better that another woman was hurt. In the real world, it would be better for an organization to be two-faced and only one victim than having two victims.

That's cool. Let Aldon & Lynch play DE. Tank can compete with Dorsey for the other DT spot (or JSmith if he' comes back). That''d be the nastiest DL I've seen since the 2003 Buccs. At least. Let T-Rex play MLB, and PWillis & Bow can play OLB. Front 7: brutal.

They're not going to find anyone in the draft anywhere near as good as MacDonald unless they trade up for Leonard Williams.

That sounds nasty. I like the 4-3 even without suh tho.

I do too, but you gotta have at least one great DT to dominate in a 4-3 IMO. I don't see Tank as that guy; he's more of a situational pass rusher IMO. Dial certainly isn't that guy; he plays too high & isn't athletic enough.

Another question:

Do the Niners promote Okoye to the roster for the last 2 games now?

No. Last season he was on IR. This season he's gotten work at DL and OL, partially/largely due to injuries.

Suh would be out of our asking price. I see him landing in Jacksonville or Redskins. However, we can snatch his teammate Fairley. That would be a much cheaper signing for us and yet it would also be an upgrade from RayMac.

I realize exactly how good McDonald is but he's not near as quick as he used to be and I can see a drastic drop off coming. We drafted these guys and now I'm ready to see what they have, give Tank the rest of the year and pre-season next year and he should be more than ready to go. You are under estimating Dial quite a bit.

I'm just not willing to break the bank on a 3-4 DE and im willing to bet The team feels the same.
