I don't think Millsap will necessarily look for a long contract with the new cap set to explode. I think it's feasible he takes a one-year big money deal with us before looking for more money elsewhere.

That said he strikes me more as the kind of guy who would sacrifice some max money to stick with the team to try to win. If we can resign him to a 4 year, $48M type deal I would be all over that.

I agree with you, he's not worth the max. Only big this summer worth the max is Marc Gasol. Yeah I can see where you coming from on what you'd offer Monroe but you have to think about the teams that strike out on Gasol that have better situations than ATL going forward like SA.

Millsap has been great. A wonderful addition to the team. But he turns 30 in a few weeks. He's at the end of his prime right now. I see him declining in production, athleticism soon. I absolutlely do NOT see him improving next year.

I'd rather pursue a long term solution to the Center situation. I also don't believe we are quite in the upper echelon of teams yet. Standing pat with aging vets will see us plateau and then fade. We saw it happen with MIA, LA Lakers, Boston.

To use a common football strategy, I'd rather dump Millsap a year too early than be stuck with him a year too late.

And as a guy who saw 30 pass a few years back, I can say with familiarity it is a STEEP decline in speed, athleticism, healing time, ability.

Three years from now, Millsap will be in decline, similar to David West for Indy. Three years from now, Monroe will be in his prime.

For the devastatting effects that age has on bball abilities...look no further than Thabo Sefalosha.

I mostly agree but disagree with your last statement. I do beleive that we will see Thabo true value comes play-off time.
He will be totally familiar with the system by them and will shows his teeths defensively.

$12 mil per season seems like a reasonable rate for PM. And it makes sense he would wait for a higher cap to squeeze a couple extra million per season...but at age 30, Paul is looking at the last major contract of his career. What he signs for next summer will likely be the financial legacy his family depends on generations to come.

If some team come offering a fat $14+ million (in anticipation of an increased salary cap down the road) it'll be VERY difficult for Millsap to pass it up. Especially when he probably signed a short deal with ATL for the sole purpose of increasing his value on the market.

Thabo may indeed prove huge next spring in the playoffs. But he is here for a couple more years after that. I have seen enough of a drop off in his play to suspect that by 2016...he could be a shell of his former self. I've seen it up close and it is a difficult thing to accept. The mind is willing, but the body is unable. The decline from 31-35 is exponential in terms of decrease of lateral speed, jumping ability, recovery time.

No doubt physical ability declines, but smart dedicated players like Millsap and Thabo can work around that by honing their skills and learning their limits. Bruce Bowen played effectively until he 35 or so, and Thabo has an edge on him, and obviously Timmy and Dirk have managed to stay relevant with age.

The caveat here is that all of them played within effective team systems, which I think we are starting to really build here in ATL.

Not buying the age argument, Thabo is 3 years younger than Kyle while Kyle is in the midst of a career year and Al is all of a year and slight change younger than Paul. Bringing up age and decline only makes sense if you are suggesting that despite Monroe being worse than either Al or Sap that you are going to jettison both to build around him. Maybe a valid argument but you're talking about a guy that has proven to be a worse overall tweener despite the up-tick in rebounding and post scoring.

Hey guys. did Denver give up on JaVale McGee? I thought he had a little game, althought he was a bit of a head case. hes on a one year deal I think, maybe help of the bench when we go big. AND HE COULD PROTECT THE RIM!!

We would have to eat his 11-12 mil salary this year AND next year. It's just not worth it imo.
