Sorry about that, thought it was an interesting perspective to consider. And I actually screwed up the number, it was actually 197-196 since Xmas 2009.
I'm familiar with all the conditionals, the injuries, the fact that we actually played like champions for parts of the 2010 and 2012 seasons and tanked most of 2014, but still it's a helpful reminder that thru all that we've really been hanging on to an image that may or may not be that accurate. In that way, it helps me get over losing Rondo for peanuts.
In another way, it shows the level of failure Danny has engaged in. Draft picks will hit and miss but what gets me is that there has been no long term plan and the things sold to us as long term moves (i.e., Jeff Green trade, building with Rondo), just weren't.
I don't understand the "failure" talk. Up until last season, we were considered contenders. When you are contending, you don't think about the long term that extensively. We made the finals in 2010 and were seven minutes away from getting back there in 2012 in spite of a myriad of injuries. He then acted accordingly during the '12 offseason by trading to add pieces. Because of injuries and some underperformance, it didn't work out. It happens.
He then tried to trade for Love this summer, but Cleveland got the No. 1 pick and the rest is history. Once again, it happens.
Seems to me there has been more bad luck than anything else.
We are in year two of the rebuild. I think we should wait at least another year or two before we declare anything a "failure."
If "failure" is just "bad luck" then leveraging all your assets into more picks and lotto balls seems like a poor way of doing business. I mean, it's like the gambler who thinks he's going to make up all his money if you just give him another dollar to get back into the game.
I like Danny but his moves since 2008 have stunk for the most part. Maybe it all pays off in 2016. Maybe its 2020. Maybe never. I don't know. Time will tell but all we have right now is the past and it ain't pretty.
What's Danny's best move since signing James Posey in 2007? Maybe the KG/Paul trade? Only if we hit with at least one of those picks. Maybe trading up for KO? Only if he's ultimately better than Giannis or Schroder. Maybe Sully or Bradley as draft picks? Marcus Smart? I really don't know. Frankly, getting Rondo signed to that extension in 2009 was probably his BEST move in terms of value.
But his worst moves since Posey? I've got a very long list there.
The Zeller trade was fantastic recently. Sullinger and Bradley were both great value picks. Smart is going to be a star and Young will end up being a steal at the spot he was drafted.
I mean, yeah. Signing Terry and making the S&T for Lee didn't work out, but they were hardly bad signings at the time. Rondo tore his ACL midway through the season, so we will never really know how that team would have done come playoff time. Maybe they would have made the ECF and pushed Miami again?
My question is, what do you want him to do? We are rebuilding. It's that simple. Obviously, Rondo's trade value was very low. Don't you think that if Ainge would have gotten a better offer, he would have pulled the trigger? It's clear he didn't want to pay Rondo what he wanted this summer, and given the fact that Rondo is 28 going on 29 and will be well into his 30s by time we are ready to win, can you blame him?
Rebuilds are ugly. No one likes them, but I think we need to give Ainge some time before we start throwing around terms like "failure."
