BOS TPE

Post#1 » by cucad8 » Fri Dec 19, 2014 7:22 am

Boston apparently was able to generate a TPE for ROndo's salary in the Dallas deal. I know they had TPE's to acquire Nelson and Wright, but my understanding is those would then be essentially new TPEs for Dallas to use, at their specific amounts. Not, however, enough to acquire Rondo. In order to aqcuire him, they'd actually have to have a TPE or just send out the players under the 150%+100K rule, which works. THat, however, would generate an exception only for the difference in salaries of roughly 4 million.
So, basically, what am I missing here? Because I've always had a pretty solid understanding on these, and haven't seen explanation of how this one was generated.

Each team can structure the deal to their own maximum benefit. Dallas is getting Rondo and Powell through the regular channel of salary matching. Their portion is easy.

Boston's side is trickier. They are taking Wright in using the Bogans' TPE, Nelson with the Anthony TPE (or a portion of the Humphries TPE), and Crowder using the rest of the Anthony TPE (or a portion of the Humphries TPE). That means they are essentially dealing Rondo without matching any salary. Because of that, a ~12.9 million TPE is generated for the Celtics.

So, Dallas generates no TPEs nor uses any. Boston uses a couple and generates a new TPE.

**Edited to reflect what is actually happening.

Boston decided to use Anthony's TPE for both Nelson and Crowder, leaving Humphries TPE untouched. They chose to keep Humphries' $1,334.092M TPE which expires on 7/20/15, rather than use Humphries' TPE to take in Crowder and a portion of Anthony's TPE to take in Nelson, which would leave a remainder of $1,068,000 in Anthony's TPE which expires on 10/19/15. In essence, they decided to keep the slightly larger TPE over the longer-term TPE.
