Re: Pistons WAIVE Josh Smith
So with the previous cap space of $2.2 mil ish. And the stretch provision taking us from paying Smith $13.5 mil to about $5.2 mil. Does this all mean we have $10 mil in cap space?

Worth it to read on the Smith situation and his short tenure as a Piston.
Great article.
Nice article, shatters the myth that Smith was a good defensive player

Looks like the Kings final offer, was Thompson & Landry for Smith and a non protected first.
Not clear when the pick became a mandate from the Kings either.

This year's cap hit/salary has no change. The stretch is used on the remaining money after this year.

And that is probably because of his sudden decline in athleticism when he signed with us. I said it from the beginning of last season that Smith didn't look like he quite went "Up" there with his dunks. His defensive lapses are all mental too since he cashed out once he went to the Pistons.

Yeah, if that's the case waiving him was a very easy choice.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

Alrighty Then
Will be curious to see how things shake out (here and where he signs) as a result of this.

Ahh, That pick is definitely what made that one a no go. I was thinking that maybe you guys were asking for one seeing as the FO is saying they made theyre choice based on the fact they did not want to use any assets to move him.

So now we get to keep Moose or draft Karl Towns/Stanley Johnson. (towns is the only player I'd take over Johnson). Unfortunately, this might actually make the Pistons good enough to get out of the top 6 picks.
But anyway this is the best Pistons news since Drummond was drafted. At least we'll get to enjoy basketball again. And Josh Smith will win a championship as the fifth option in Dallas.
Yes sir. Though, I'd prefer Mudiay since we have a gaping hole at the PG spot, and might as well go for a athletic freak like him that can pass and slash.
I believe in Dinwiddie. All he needs is 15 pounds of muscle. He won't be a freak but he's tall and he can shoot and he's smart. That's really all we need. What we really need to do is make sure that we are set ar PF or SF with either Carl towns or Stanley Johnson
You need 2-way wings, 2-way shooting bigs, and you can't allow low iq players on the court. Assist/turnover ratio is crucial. Shooting point guards are icing on the cake IF they are plus defenders.
Weaver & Casey, govern yourselves accordingly!

Yeah thought you guys should know.
I'd be mad at SVG if you could have got Thompson/Landry, because of JT's buyout on the third year, but also thankful if the Kings insisted on the first that SVG walked away.

Re: Pistons WAIVE Josh Smith
Thompson is only guranteed for 2.3 in 2016-17. If we do the deal and stretch Landry, here's how it looks.
2.6 + 6
2.6 + 2.3
2.6
2.6
2.6
Total 21.3
vs.
5.3
5.3
5.3
5.3
5.3
Total 26.5
And we get more space up front in the second, which most any team would prefer.

The Kings wanted to receive an unprotected first from Detroit.
So that's how bad it was, Detroit gives away a pick, and take Landry/Thompson.

Dream Scenario- 76ers claim him off waivers
Should do Scenario- Dallas in a lesser role, but on a better team
But since hes Josh Smith Scenario- Sacramento. They have still been trying to trade for him, now they can just sign him.

So if I'm understanding this correctly, its 5.2 million per year for the next 5 years?

I'm not that high on Towns his body proportions is a concern.

The stetch does little for you though with trades, I guess you could just call it a day with it, but I think trying to gamble on a trade down the road would have been a better choice.
But not for an unprotected first.

Gutsy move! I love it. Glad to close the book on Josh Smith. There's more to clean up.

Re: Pistons WAIVE Josh Smith
I'll be honest, it does reassure me some to know that SVG, deep down in his most private thoughts, despite his starting him every game and publicly talking about how he's an important part of the team, hated having him on the team just as much as I did.
It gives me a certain feeling of kinship with the guy that I didn't necessarily have before.
I also find myself respecting Gores more on a personal level too. He has come a long way from being the guy who made us cough up a first rounder rather than amnestying Ben Gordon. He's grown as an owner.
Stay the course, SVG. Stay the course.

Folks saying we should be improved - you know the only player to benefit from this is the guy called "Poop" around here last year and beginning of this year right?
