This isn't that surprising after reading the facts. I guess they stretched him, which I didn't even know they could do with this deal, so while his deal will stay on the books for 5 years it will be at a fraction of the price. They immediately save money over taking on Landry/Thompson. Also it sounded like getting a pick with Smith was the only way to unload him. They keep their assets and reduce his deal moving forward. I never even thought he could be stretched, maybe this was what Pete was waiting for?

Rox released Tarik Black to make room for Smith.

A nice cheap b/u center option there to pick up.
