True, but they weren't talented enough to win the Super Bowl even while being screwed by the ref's.

How do you plan for that though?

Well the missing pieces I listed in those couple of years would've been an excellent start in my opinion.

As of now, I think priority 1 is to get back to that elite level of talent, and I don't think that's possible in 2015 without an extremely large increase in the quality of QB play (which is probably impossible). I think the Niners are Ndamokung Suh, a good CB, a good WR and a QB who's better than Kaepernick away from getting back there. I don't think it's realistic to try to fill all of those needs in one offseason, so I say get the hardest one except QB (Suh) to replace RayMac, draft a QB & develop him, draft a WR (like DGB maybe) and develop all of those pieces in 2015. CB will depend on what happens to Culliver & Cox and how good the youngs are.

Suh is a HOF caliber DL. This is almost like when Reggie White was a FA. He can single-handedly make the defense nastier. And if the Niners are smart & get rid of Kaepernick & the older, expensive vet's, they can easily afford him.

As should the vast majority be drafted. But they signed:

David Baas (5 years, 27.5 million; very high for a center then).
Chris Canty (6 years, 42 million).
Antrel Rolle (largest safety contract in NFL history at the time and one of the most underrated players in the league I might add).

And Kareem McKenzie wasn't drafted by the team, but he was around for a long, long time (kind of like Justin Smith with the Niners).

They didn't build the team through FA (no successful team does), but they sure as heck filled some big, expensive positions of need through it.

Not sure that Baas was all that great - decent sure, but not great. Canty was overpaid for I thought, good role player, but thats about it....Niners found decent bargains in FA without overpaying - Whitner, Goodwin, Carlos Rogers, Dan Skuta, Glenn Dorsey, Bethea, not to mention trading for Boldin for a SIXTH roudner mind you, and Stevie as well.

The Niners were not beat in the Super Bowl because of their lack of talent. Chris Culliver played the worst game of his life that day and the refs seemingly wanted to send Ray Lewis off with a ring.

Also, the boost that got the Giants to the big game was none of those players you listed. The boost that got them there was Kyle William. He quite literally fumbled the game away.[/quote]

Cully didnt help certainly in the Super Bowl. But, even bigger than that was our pass rush being hamstrung by injuries - Justin playing with a torn tricep and Aldon platying with a torn labrum in his shoulder.

No I mean how do you plan for something that catches you off guard? Like a complete screw job? You can't.

As for your wants; I agree that we need to up the talent at CB and WR. I also agree that we need a new QB. However Suh isn't coming here plain and simple, he doesn't want to play in a 3-4 and we aren't likely to change our philosophy so we need to move on.

Story seems quite fishy on Ray Mac.

Not good to hear on aldon if true. He could be cut next if they find any info on him drinking.

That probably a major reason why they cut him so fast - to save Aldon from f'ing up again. If AD's play turns around next year it could be because he's actually sober. Good to hear that football won't get in the way of Ray Mac's party animal lifestyle for a little while until his wife divorces him and he runs out of money. That being said some team will get a steal after his inevitable "time out" suspension is served.

Matt Maiocco:

Aldon Smith's agent, Doug Hendrickson, says Smith was not drinking at Ray McDonald house, as suggested in the affidavit.
