Buyer Beware: Another Disgruntled Guard

Post#1061 » by Ranma » Mon Dec 22, 2014 2:43 am

Gary Washburn, Boston Globe (12/21/14)
While the Hornets are looking to make changes after a poor start for a team expected to make the playoffs, there is no certainty they will move recently signed Lance Stephenson, whose time in Charlotte has been disappointing at best. According to league sources, Stephenson has clashed with teammates, and coach Steve Clifford has placed the onus of Stephenson’s adjustment on the team’s veteran players, hoping they could police themselves and convince Stephenson to become more of a team player. Stephenson may become a more attractive piece near the Feb. 19 trade deadline, but the Hornets would want value in return.

We've all seen the reports:

[tweet]http://twitter.com/SpearsNBAYahoo/status/547071856373538816[/tweet]

But what does a waiver have to do with a trade?

First, Josh Smith has played with Jamal Crawford before. As a Hawk in 2010 and 2011.

Mike Woodson was the Hawks coach at that time, too.

If the Clippers claim Josh Smith as a pure free agent, this means we could see a farm trade for superstar Joe Johnson, who was also a Hawk at that time. It's chemistry heaven for Doc Rivers.

Instead of a reunion with one of Doc's Big 3, we could have Hawks west.

several middling seasons of boring, iso-heavy offenses that never went anywhere in the playoffs? one super 1v1 chucker isnt' enough? let's get one more of each!

why would anyone want to sign up for that?

Do you actually know what a claim is? When you claim a player you absorb their entire contract. On top of that, you need CAP space to do that. The Clippers can't claim Josh Smith, nor would they want to.

so, which team can use Jamal and Farmar? we need to brainstorm and come up with a trade scenario that can be mutually beneficial.

No one can use Farmar. He is useless.

Knowing Doc's amazing GM skills we will probably end up trading for Mullens and giving away as many picks as we can.

Revisiting Horford

More food for thought on this scenario.

Jeff Goodman, ESPN Insider (12/23/14)
For some reason, Al Horford just doesn't get the respect he deserves. His former teammate at Florida explains why succinctly.

"Because he plays in Atlanta," Chicago Bulls star Joakim Noah told me earlier this season.
...

"He's one of the elite, maybe the best, two-way big men in the league," one general manager said of Horford. "Without him, the Hawks are a fringe playoff team. With him, they can finish third in the league."

"Shoot, they may even be able to win the East the way they are playing," added another GM.
...

"We're a completely different team with him," admitted Hawks guard Shelvin Mack.

Horford is a two-time All-Star in his prime at 28 years old. He was averaging 18.6 points and 8.4 rebounds at the time of his injury, and his numbers have dropped off a bit this season (14.2 PPG, 6.5 RPG) -- but his impact on this team goes well beyond numbers.

"He's a diligent worker, sacrifices for others and is a terrific leader," Hawks second-year coach Mike Budenholzer said of Horford. "He's just so unselfish."
...

"He's all about winning," said former Florida assistant Donnie Jones, now the head coach at UCF. "That's what makes him so special. He's rare these days."

"His presence just gives everyone else confidence," added Mack. "He doesn't care about his own numbers. He just wants to win."

HoopsWorld McDaniels Feature

Post#1074 » by Ranma » Wed Dec 24, 2014 9:58 am

QRich3 wrote:Nah, they're keepin McDaniels even if they have to pay him more than they want to. He's restricted and I don't see him risking a potential multimillion contract by taking the QO. As much as it pains me, we lost our chance at him drafting Wilcox.

Alex Kennedy, BasketballInsiders.com (12/23/14)
This is who McDaniels is – a kid who loves basketball, works harder than many of his peers and wants to be great. He’s been doing these intense late-night workouts for years and he’s not changing his approach just because he made it to the NBA.

Some players in McDaniels’ position wouldn’t train as hard as he does. After all, he could probably get by with a worse work ethic due to his freakish athleticism, 6’11 wingspan and 8’6 standing reach. But McDaniels isn’t content with just getting by or being average. Being an elite athlete isn’t enough for him; he wants to be an elite player and he knows the only way to become one is by living in the gym.

“I’ve watched the greats – from LeBron to Kobe to Michael to Carmelo to D-Wade – and I’ve seen the amount of work that they put in,” McDaniels told Basketball Insiders. “I’m on YouTube a lot watching those guys, and I try to model myself after them. I want to be the greatest out there. I’m going to keep trying. It’s only my rookie year, but I feel like I can do that. My work ethic isn’t going to change. The work never stops.”

Maybe earlier in the season we could have got him, but i'm not sure now. Atlanta is just playing too well now.

IF we had to trade DJ,
DJ for Deng (Miami are desperate for a defensive center)
Package of Jamal and fillers for starting center.
Anyone else like this?

Look everybody the deal has to make sense dollar 4 dollar in contract. Jordan Farmar for Rodney Stuckey does work contract wise and is a major upgrade at back-UP POINT guard. Then Matt Barnes, C.J Wilcox, Hedo Turkgolu and Reggie Bullock for Wilson Chandler and Erick Greene from Denver which we get a up-grade at starting foward and another back-up big body in Erick Greene. Are second unit could be a starting unit in any other team Stuckey - PG, Crawford SG, Davis PF, Greene SF, Hawes C, NOW THAT IS A CHAMPIONSHIP CALLIBER TEAM.

farmar and stuckey are about the same age, but that's about where their comparisons end. Stuckey also started 20 games or so for the pacers and I don't see why they would trade him with smaller contract for the lesser, more expensive player.
