JDLAW wrote:They are not going after Melo. There six impediments standing in the way of a Melo trade to the Suns:

1) The Suns had no interest in him in the off-season
2) Melo had no interest in the Suns
3) Melo has a no-trade clause
4) Melo has a trade kicker to add to his ginormous salary
5) Melo has a bad knee and
6) LaLa does not want to leave her gig in NYC

Oh, and just to touch on a few of these with my rebuttal....

1. Suns were in the Lebron Hunt and had a real chance at landing him. We put all our eggs into one basket, and really didnt have time to roll out the red carpet for Melo (He signed with NY 2 days later). Paul Coro did report that we were interested in Melo during FA, and we do have a tie-in with Anthony, who has known and been friends with Suns assistant general manager and fellow Baltimore native Pat Connelly since he was a kid.

2. How do you know he has no interest. Im sure he would love to be on a playoff contender (Us+Melo) while making that near max (Not full max) Knick money. At this point, anything has to be better than playing for the Knicks. We have a good team in a nice city with some good teammates.

3. YES! He has a no trade clause, one that has been reported that he would waive in order to get out of NY. Reports from the past few weeks have said that he has been open to waiving his no trade clause if he likes the team and think its a good fit (which we are).

4. YES! He has a trade kicker......that doesnt kick in this season! Thats right, his trade kicker only takes effect if he is traded after this season. This is how it works:

Another obstacle – the 15 percent trade kicker in Melo’s contract – has been overstated. It would not affect anything if he’s traded this season. A trade kicker can’t raise a player’s salary above the max, and Carmelo is already there.

However, if Melo is traded next season, when his salary drops below the max, the trade kicker would net him more money. If the salary cap rises high enough, the final three years of Melo’s contract could also fall below the max, and if it does, a trade during those seasons would also provide Melo his trade bonus.

A trade this season wouldn’t get Melo any extra money. A trade next season would definitely get him extra money. A trade after that might get him extra money.

5. Bad knee? Really? I mean its not like we dont posses the best athletic/training staff in the league, but Melo (with his bad knee and all) still have been having a GREAT season! He is averaging 24/7/3 (45%FG). He has had 6 games over 30 points this season, including a 46 point game. He rebounds great for being a SF, and has really stepped up his defense, and has also shown that he can play PF and hold his own against opposing PF's.

6. Invoking the wife i see. The one that married and lived with him in Denver (while also working in NY for BET). I hate to burst your bubble, but athletes get paid good money and end up buying more than one house. Do you think all the Suns actually live in Phoenix? Nope. Most rent a high priced condo during the season, then go back to their homestate in the offseason. Half the season is spent traveling and on the road anyways. Remember that Nash guy? You know, the one who lived in NY during the offseason? To say that Melo wont leave the Knicks for a better team because his wife like NY is just dumb and thrown on the list for another bs bulletpoint.

So yeah..... Thats pretty much my rebuttal for every point you made as to why Melo will never come to Phoenix. As for your constant "Suns will never trade Dragic" posts, i could dedicate another 10 minutes to tearing that apart, but i have already wasted too much time on this on as it is.

Lol. The target wouldn't be Melo. It would be a three team trade where Knicks get our assets, Melo goes elsewhere, and then we get another star. Or at least that is how I view it.
I see this kind of deal happening...
Suns get
James Harden
Iman Shumpert

Knicks get-
Donatas Motiejunas
Terrence Jones
Trevor Ariza
Isaiah Thomas
Archie Goodwin
Tyler Ennis
Lakers 1st/Pelicans 1st/Suns 1st

Rockets get-
Carmelo Anthony
Goran Dragic
Gerald Green

The Rockets are not trading Harden. He is a beast and in the running for MVP. They are playoff team looking like a real contender. When in that situation you do not trade your best player.

The only star player you get is one that is high paid, disgruntled, and or on a very bad team that is looking to blow-up and rebuild.

I probably lean just a tiny bit towards trading for Melo but I can't see us giving up more than Isaiah as a centerpiece to a Melo trade. You want to have

Bledsoe/Dragic/Melo/Kieff/Len. That's a good roster that can compete out west. Bledsoe/bad player/Melo/Kieff/Len cannot get it done and would probably be a lateral short term move at best that mortgages our future.

I also believe Melo gets unfair hate for some of the stuff he's done. I don't buy that he doesn't want to win. It's just that taking the extra money New York gave him is something almost everybody would do and that money can change his family forever. He is playing heavy (heavy) minutes and putting up good stats (his FG% is actually solid) on a team where he might be the only good player.

The biggest problem is the contract he is on which is huge. It also gives the Knicks more leverage to get pieces out of our team because he cannot sign with us in free agency. The biggest thing for New York should simply be getting out of his giant contract so they can begin their rebuilding process.

I agree Kerssed,Anthony looks to be the most attainable but does not fit the age category. Now he does have one Olympic run in him and would be the all-star who could attract fee agents. Some of you say the Suns have a Melo esque player in Warren. But I am curious as to what all star McD thinks he can get under the age of 25. Whatever god McD prays to he must be putting in overtime praying for Cousins to demand to be reunited with Bledsoe in Phoenix.

Granted the Knicks will have plenty of cap and a top 3 pick in a weak eastern conference so they could bounce back next year. And I doubt McD would overpay but if Melo decides he wants out the Suns can offer a take it or I could care less package. This would give the Knicks even more cap space next year and get them out of that monstrosity of a contract. With the cap going up it might not matter to them anyway if they feel they can fill out the roster next around Melo with a top pick and free agency.I know Melo has a no trade clause so I doubt anything happens.

Give them the Suns unprotected first. Minnys 2 2nds and maybe a 2017 from the Suns. But hang onto that Laker pick.

We could do the same type of trade with the Cavs instead of the Rockets. That way, the Cavs didn't just give up their entire future for a Lebron and Love rental.

Doesn't matter, Melo isn't waiving his no-trade clause to come here. I was just wondering out loud what a trade would look like.

We dont need to send our youngsters to NY for Melo.
His contract is atrocious... we just need to match some salaries and throw some picks.

Just like both Rudy Gay's trades.
Of course he's much better than Gay, but the situation fits.

We're not getting 'Melo, NYK is looking to put a strong team around team, not without him.

Melo also has a no trade clause.

So what "Stars" fit the Mid-20's "mold" McD was talking about?

Westbrook
Cousins
George
Rose
Durant
Griffin
Davis
Curry
Harden
Drummond
Lillard
Wall
DeRozan
Butler
Thompson
Irving

Did i forget any?

Now eliminate all the PG's (Westbrook/Curry/Rose/Lillard/Wall/Irving). With the rest, determine which ones would their current teams trade?

Spoiler:
I dont see any!

Pssshhhh.....i can do worse.....much worse. and it kinda sorta makes a little sense.

Suns trade:
Tucker/IT/Plumlee/Lakers 2015 First/Suns 2016 First
Suns get:
Cousins/Papanikola

Suns take the big step forward. Cousins makes them contenders. They clear the logjam at PG, which keeps Goran happy, and he re-signs in the offseason. Cousins contract is perfect, and doesnt cap-kill the suns. We have plenty of youth in Len/Warren/Goodwin and its time to cash in our assets on a star. Len/Cousins/Green/Dragic/Bledsoe

Rockets trade:
Jones/Montiejunas/Ariza/Terry/Papanikolas/Pelicans 2015 First/Rockets 2016 First
Rockets get:
Melo/JR

Rockets already landed themselves Josh Smith. Melo gets them another legit star. Howard/Smith/Melo/Harden/Beverley

Kings trade:
Cousins
Kings get:
Jones/Montiejunas/Plumlee/Johnson/Lakers 2015 First/Suns 2016 First

Kings cash in on Cousins now. With the west where it is, the Kings will NEVER be contending with Cousins. They add a bunch of youth and picks to their team, and build around they young players they already have. Jones/Monte/Johnson/MaCallum/McLemore/Staukas are all under 25. And if they are bad enough, they'll have 2x top 10 picks this coming draft.

Knicks trade:
Melo/JR
Knicks get:
IT/Tucker/Ariza/Terry/Pelicans 2015 First/Rockets 2016 First

Knicks tank it the rest of the season, and hell they might even be better after this trade. They add a bunch of tradeable assets and draft picks for a star that is taking them nowhere. They can use this offseason to reassess their position, and still retain the ability to sign a max contract this coming offseason.

NY has been trying to put a strong team around him for years. They are at a point where adding a strong TEAM is not going to happen. They can add another star and a bunch of garbage again.....just like they've been doing for the past 4 years. NY needs to start over. As much as i've loved watching them fail at this multi-max game without a proven core, they really need to a.) Stop trading away their picks b.) suck balls for 2-3 years and build a cheap core that they can THEN surround with a couple of max contracts.

LOL, even though i dont believe that the Kings would trade Cousins, i made a trade that i believe would make them contenders (but shorten their window).

http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=ofokh4u

Suns get Cousins
Kings get West/Hibbert/Green
Pacers get DragicX2/Len/Williams/Thompson

Suns run with IT/Bledsoe/Tucker/Morris/Cousins

Kings give up best talent, but get more talented in multiple positions. Collison/Green/Gay/West/Hibbert

Pacers start the rebuild and get ready for next season. Maybe they flip an expiring contract or two to re-acquire Lance (as has been speculated in the media) Dragic/Stephenson/PG/?????/Len

Melo had a chance to go to Chicago to basically sleepwalk to the Finals for the next several years. He chose the money and lifestyle of NYC. Not knocking that, it's his choice so he can do what he wants but his priorities are clear and have been for years.

It's risky as hell but I'd love to see Paul George here next season. Without giving Goran it would have to be Bledsoe plus Warren or picks (or both).

Just looking at he Pelicans roster and saw that they are sitting at $77mil. That means they will be paying the luxury tax. If they move Asik they could easily avoid paying the tax. I say we help them and ourselves.

I have always liked Asik whenever I have seen him play. He defends and rebounds. We have seen what that does for our crew. It appears that Len is evolving nicely but needs some help and Plumlee has generally been horrible this year.

A duo of Len and Asik at the 5 going forward could really be good for us. Len might even be able to play some 4 in the coming years.

I don't know what it would take to get him but he will be a free agent this off season so his value could be low. I don't know what he will command as a free agent this off season.

I expect some combination of Plumlee, Green and Isaih might be able to get him.

I do know he is exactly the kind of player I think we could use most.

I also like Cole Aldrich of the Knicks. He is cheap and a free agent this summer as well. He provides some of the same things as Asik but probably could be had for just a draft pick.

I just hope we do not go after someone like Melo.

keep after 'em Kerrsed.... to say 'no trade' will happen flies in the face of the FO. Sure, Melo would have to yellow on NYC to start with, but stranger things have happened. The desert is a magical place......

What ever happens I'll be stocked if Dragic,Bledsoe and Len are starting. I'd hate to think if we are thinking of trading any of these guys. I'd like to back our organization to retain dragic if he has half a brain he will stay.

Return to Phoenix Suns
