The Memphis pick that Cleveland owns is basically reverse lottery protected. There's no way they see it next summer but if could be very valuable if something unforeseen happens such as Gasol walking in FA next summer. That pick along with the Pelicans pick that Houston owns could be 2 of the more valuable trade assets at the trade deadline.
That Pels pick I would definitely take, but not sure Houston gives that for Wright. The Memphis pick is far more uncertain and I think Wright is more highly valued than that.
The Memphis Pick remains a first rounder....it just may be a couple years down the road because Memphis is good right now.
I think that is a good haul for Wright...and probably more than we can get realistically. Sure there is uncertainty, but it will be a first rounder and the way the protection is...it could be just as good as the Pelicans pick if there is a mishap for Memphis in the next few years.
Wright, as the "blossoming center" was supposed to be the centerpiece of the Rondo trade for us. Maybe why I'm having such a hard time with accepting a pick so protected as Memphis' is is because it means we traded Rondo, in essence, for a heavily protected pick that could potentially not vest until 2019
Depending on what assets (s) we send out, how would you feel about this? I posted this in the Cavs thread about us being facilitators:
Any trade with Cleveland that also involves Memphis could actually be good for us regarding Cleveland holding Memphis' pick.
That pick sucks as is. It is protected 1-5 and 15-30 for '15 and '6 and 1-5 for '17 and '18. A 2017 draft pick that could be in the 20s for a substantial asset is what it well could be.
However, if we are giving up anything substantial to Memphis, we should demand that Memphis remove all restrictions on the pick. That would be far more palatable to me than some pick 3-5 years in the future that might or might not be something good.
