Well I realize I missed the introduction phase by several months, but I figured if Moonbeam can do his I can do mine. I figure I've been around here enough lately that people might actually care who I am.

Born and raised in Chicago, I'll be 22 years old in about 3 weeks. I spent my freshman and sophomore years at Indiana University, but had to duck when I realized paying $50K a year for an undergrad degree wasn't worth it. Loved the atmosphere there, and I wish I could've stayed, but I've got a future to consider, ya know? So I moved back to my hometown, currently going to a cheap state school to finish my degree. I'm double majoring in Chemistry and Psychology and assist in the Psych research lab at my university. Planning to get right into medical school right after I graduate. I've wanted to be a physician at least since I was 10, and the more I've learned about the profession as I grew the more convinced I became. I'm a total science nerd, and I think the human body is totally rad. And I'm really thankful I have the talent to pursue something like this and fulfill my dream.

I'm a pretty shy/reserved guy in my personal life (probably a good trait given my proclivity to research labs and studying), not the type of guy to spend the weekends partying. I'm a big reader, currently working on the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series; other favorites include Freakonomics and anything by Dickens. My all-time favorite show is Community (the GOAT, inarguably. Give it a shot). It's also where the quote in my sig is from. Also love Arrested Development, Lost, and Sunny in Philadelphia.

Started playing basketball in 7th grade, but never really reached my potential in school because I was the tallest guy on the team and thus was shoehorned into playing Center despite my tiny frame and poor footwork. I'm a 6'4" (in shoes) 170 pound white guy, so I had to make my living on the perimeter. These days I play the 2/3, and I specialize in a Goran Dragic type slashing game. Decent shooter, okay playmaker, great foul-drawer, sometimes make the most bone-headed plays you've ever seen. I play pickup and a few tournaments, hoping to get into a rec league over the summer.

I started watching the NBA seriously circa 2005, and naturally the Suns and Mavs became my favorite teams instantly. Dirk is still my favorite player, and I'm making a point to see him play in person before he retires. Grew up watching the Bulls in the mid-90s, I was a very emotional fan for a 3 year old  . I've kind of outgrown my fanhood by now, in a process remarkably similar to what Zach Lowe describes here: http://grantland.com/the-triangle/the-l ... of-fandom/ I just enjoy watching every team and every player too much to really have an emotional attachment to any particular team. These days I watch ball when I can and spend too much time on RealGM. Maybe I'll consider getting into writing at some point, if it's in the cards.

The most important thing I do, bar far, is my volunteer work. Every summer, winter, and sporadically in between, I work as a counselor at a camp for children with cancer. It's the most rewarding experience I've ever had, and words can't even describe how meaningful this place is to me. It's a place I've met my best friends, a place I've fallen in love, and a place that I've laughed and cried at more than any other. Cancer sounds like a drag, but I assure you that every summer there is the most fun I've ever had in my life. We play sports, go swimming, camp out, and do basically everything under the sun to give these kids an experience they couldn't otherwise have with their medical issues. And the kids there are my biggest inspiration. Here's a video if you want to learn a little more about it (one of my good friends is the narrator at the beginning): http://vimeo.com/113307837

Jarring change of pace: my screen name is the name of a character on the show 30 Rock. Mostly I chose it because I love the dichotomy of calling someone "doctor", a reverential title, followed by a ridiculous name like "Spaceman". Good stuff.

Good stuff, thanks for sharing. Good luck with all the future plans; hope it all works out as you'd like it to (but roll with the punches if it doesn't).

wrt to trivial matters: Speaking for myself, Community is not the GOAT (M*A*S*H FTW!!), but Community may get my vote for the most purely funny show of all-time. I literally lol'ed (and I don't throw out the ole' "lol" lightly) EVERY SINGLE EPISODE, especially in the first two seasons. Am rewatching the occasional episode, and find myself consistently lol'ing again on the second watch.

I don't think Community is the GOAT show either not that I care enough about shows to rank them as GOATs. There are bad shows, good shows, and great shows, I'd say Community is clearly a great show. It has its own niche following, it can be a little tough for some to get into especially if they are not familiar with all the pop-culture references that the show uses. The reason that I like Community a lot is that they did not fall into the trap of making it a romantic show and stringing the audiences along with a "will they/won't they" relationship story-line or a relationship angle that completely takes over the show (not sure if you watch Suits, but they have done this with two of their characters). It still remains a show about the friendship of a group at its core(really miss Pierce, Troy and now Shirley :()
Spoiler:
Even with Britta and Troy were dating it didn't overwhelm the rest of the characters and story-lines, for example.
The creator of the show did say that they will probably explore the Jeff/Annie relationship dynamic but I expect it to not become the sole focus of the show like relationships do with so many others shows.

Aha yeah, I definitely don't have a GOAT list for TV Shows (I don't care about lists THAT much), but I do know that Community has had the biggest effect on me personally. As Trex said, it's HILARIOUS, even as I've seen some episodes 5 times or so, I still laugh out loud.

But what really seals it for me is the way the show handles emotional content. It's not heavy-handed, it's light, simple and effective. McHale and Jacobs are particularly great at switching on a dime between making you laugh out loud and delivering an emotional line that punches you right in the gut. At its core, the show is about human relationships and their dynamics. In fact, two of my favorite scenes are

Spoiler:
The end of the season 1 premiere, when Abed stages a fake wedding for Jeff and Britta which leads to the entire group getting into a huge fight, this is probably the best the show has done with balancing its humorous and emotional sides

And

Spoiler:
Troy's goodbye. Jeff and Abed's lines are delivered so perfectly.

And of course, season 5 deals with some dark content that other sitcoms wouldn't dare touch, and handles it really elegantly. Plus the first 7 episodes is probably the funniest stretch in the show's run so far.

This X 100. They have stayed true to their premise and the whole meta-humor thing. They make fun of other sitcoms and have not become 'sitcomy'. So many shows start with great premises but then go for the low-hanging fruit of relationship drama but Community has managed to avoid that for a full 5 seasons. I would have hated the show if they had stopped developing the entire cast and started focusing on the relationship between Jeff/Britta/Annie/Troy.

I think the actors also do a fantastic job. Personally I think McHale and Pudi (he's from Chicago too, Spaceman) are two of the better actors. The writers' use of Pudi for delivering off-handed references to other shows and similar situations in them is brilliant frankly.

Nice, though he's a lot older than us. I believe he's in his 30s though looks younger and I am slightly older than you .

I like how the forum looks, really clean :)

Only thing I don't like is the "Jump to" function. With the old one we could just press the "Go" button to go back, now we have to choose

Thanks! You as well. Been a great day watching 80s comedies with the family (Kareem's cameo in Airplane is always a favorite).

Hope everyone here has a wonderful holiday. Remember the real reason for the season, NBA Christmas day games!

Merry XMas guys! Might sound kind of corny, but having a place like the PC board to extensively (and respectfully) debate basketball is certainly the gift that keeps on giving. 8-)
Now that's the difference between first and last place.

Anyone got any good book recommendations? Basketball or otherwise.

Here's some basketball book that I've recently read and would recommend.

The Last Shot by Darcy Frey
Spoiler:
It ought to be just a game, but basketball on the playgrounds of Coney Island is much more than that — for many young men it represents their only hope of escape from a life of crime, poverty, and despair. In The Last Shot, Darcy Frey chronicles the aspirations of four of the neighborhood’s most promising players. What they have going for them is athletic talent, grace, and years of dedication. But working against them are woefully inadequate schooling, family circumstances that are often desperate, and the slick, brutal world of college athletic recruitment. Incisively and compassionately written, The Last Shot introduces us to unforgettable characters and takes us into their world with an intimacy seldom seen in contemporary journalism. The result is a startling and poignant expose of inner-city life and the big business of college basketball.

Loose Balls by Jayson Williams
Spoiler:
The first candid report from a land of fragile egos, available women, unexpected tenderness, intramural fistfights, colossal partying, bizarre humor, inconceivable riches, and desperate competition, Loose Balls does for roundball what Ball Four did for hardball. From revelations about the meanest, softest, and smelliest players in the league, to Williams’s early days as a “young man with a lot of money and not a lot of sense,” to his strong and powerful views on race, privilege, and giving back, Loose Balls is a basketball book unlike any other.

No inspirational pieties or chest-thumping boasting here—instead, Jayson Williams gives us the real insider tales of refs, groupies, coaches, entourages, and all the superstars, bench warmers, journeymen, clowns, and other performers in the rarefied circus that is professional basketball.

The Golden Boys by Cameron Stauthor
Spoiler:
Stauth's account of the original 1992 Dream Team moves both forward in time through the Olympics and backward in time through the lives of each of the twelve players. Stauth finds loneliness, ego, talent, selfishness, teamwork, insecurity and, interestingly enough, unconditionally loving mothers. Particularly fascinating sections include: the selection process (Chuck Daly, the coach, ranked each of his Detroit Pistons highly); a thorough examination of "the zone," the fleeting basketball plane where a player cannot miss; and Charles Barkley's last year as a Philadelphia 76er, doing everything he can to force a trade.

Highly recommend the other Loose Balls about the history of the ABA:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/141654 ... CBSY6Z9WBC

Easy to pick up and just read 20-30 pages on and off. Some pretty crazy stories, and will definitely make you appreciate the league more.

These are pretty standard, but the breaks of the game and heaven is a playground are great as well.
