Speaking of Maryland's best player, one particular player stood out in this game and it was Jake Layman. Over the last few years, Layman may not have been a player that got a ton of attention, but he deserves it right now. The Terps are 12 games into the season and he has scored double digits in every game, has a 120.9 offensive rating, a 65.0% true shooting percentage, and a 17.1% defensive rebounding rate. In Maryland's game against Oklahoma State, he had 21 points, 11 rebounds, and 2 assists.

Jake's probably close to a 1st round pick in this draft if he declares.

how close? :) closer than me and you, but how close really?

love jake, he's been doing great at the 4 recently, but his size does not translate to the pros and he's far away from the association at this point. if he stays and has a mike jones type senior year, then we might talk about first round.

If the Terps hold their own in the B1G they will make the NCAA tournament.

Layman just needs to look good against teams like Wisconsin, Michigan State, etc.and have a strong NCAAs. He is already being compared to Chandler Parsons. Layman has better physical skills than Luke Babbitt. He's on par with Chase Budinger.

Mzaretsk, I don't know about you, but Jake is definitely closer to 1st round than I am! :)

FWIW I agree with those who say he will get better if he stays in school another year.

That said, Layman is able to compete with Otto Porter IMO right now.

Wow. UMD plays MSU next week at the Izzo Zone.

Hopefully we get through Oakland unscathed!

Postgame Observations: Maryland 72, Oakland 56

--"Sunshine" Layman with 15 points (6-9FG), 12 rebounds, 0 turnovers did nothing to hurt his draft stock.
--The Terps can win without Trimble's nation-leading free throw attempts. (Romelo went 0-0 FT today)
--Trimble can score without free throws. 5-6 3PTers, 17 points. He is a top freshman, see below ...
--Perfect opponent for Dez Wells to ease back in the lineup before the B1G games begin. Dez scored all 10 points in the second half.
--Trimble is perhaps the best Terp freshman since Joe Smith
--Cevosky appears to have a total game, high skill set. Impressive stat line minus the fouls.
--Maryland held yet another opponent below 40% FG. (38.3)
--Maryland shot lights out ...

50% FG, 40% 3PT, and 87.5% (14-16) FT

EVEN THE GREAT STEVE NASH APPROVES OF THE WAY THE TERPS SHOOT THE BASKETBALL Image

And one last observation:

This Maryland squad is one zillion times better than last year's!

I'm loving this season!

im starting to seriously consider whether melo is a one and done. i just don't know how much more turgeon will be able to develop him vs nba strength and shooting coaches.

Looks like he's developing just fine to me. :D

I don't see Trimble as a 1 and done simply because right now - he doesn't have an NBA position. He's really playing the 2 for the Terps - more than the 1, and while he has solid size for the 1, he's not big enough to be a 2 in the NBA. What he needs to do is prove that he can be an NBA PG - and he can do that next season and be a mid 1st rounder. Layman is more ready for the NBA. Hopefully, he sees he can also boost his stock with another year of improvement.

The team is still a quality big from being a top 10 team. Cevosky has good ability, but he's too inconsistent at this point. Dodd looks the part but doesn't seem to have any basketball instincts. Too bad Robert Carter, Jr isn't eligible.

Maryland up to #12, this seems to be a down year for the Big 10, lets hope we can hover around 10 for the rest of the season. Should help us land a couple recruits to keep the momentum going. I love that Turg is going after shooters, it's something UMD has lacked since mike freakin jones.

Hopefully we can land Diamond Stone, he would be a big get for the program.

Blockbuster News on the Horizon for Maryland Football?

Maryland's top target in 2016, Dwayne Haskins, has kept things quiet in his hectic recruitment. But chatter continues to increase that it may only be a matter of time before Haskins -- the No. 2 pro style quarterback in the country and a top-50 national recruit regardless of position -- is publicly committed to Maryland.

Several sources, including top local recruits, have told IMS Haskins either has given Maryland a silent commitment or is all but done to the Terps. Maryland always stood out to Haskins, but commitments from Adam McLean, Keandre Jones and Lorenzo Harrison may have pushed the Terps over the top with him.

While a commitment from one of the nation's top quarterbacks would be a big deal for Maryland, which has a thin depth chart at the position and hasn't landed a quarterback as heralded since Chris Kelley 15 years ago, a silent verbal wouldn't necessarily mean his recruitment is over. There were rumors that Damian Prince gave Florida a silent verbal months before he committed, and as we all know, Prince ended up in College Park. Likewise, in reverse order, with Jalen Tabor and Maryland.

Early in his recruitment, many pegged Ohio State as a heavy favorite, but with OSU taking two more quarterbacks in the 2015 class, Maryland's emphasized the opportunity to make an early impact. The other top contenders appear to be Penn State and Rutgers -- he's from New Jersey originally -- but the Nittany Lions already have a commitment from Jake Zembiec, another highly regarded pro style passer in the 2016 class.
