Back in NYC now for work (nothing too exciting, some programming and some excel, some writeups). Huge fan of trance music (a bunch of great places in SF
and even in San Jose now), been to Electric Daisy the past few years (just got some new cans, was using HFI-580s but treated myself to the AKG Q701s recently). Been building computers for a few years (need to upgrade my GPUs soon-ish), love fooling around with water cooling (nice custom loop with fans that are loud as hell
), though I don't really game too much (mostly Football Manager and Civ V, some Skyrim with a ton of mods occasionally). Play a good deal of pickup ball (scrappy defender/rebounder/post player), golf (some nice courses in the area).
Started watching the NBA for 92-93 because of the Shaq hype (in my first basketball camp the summer after he was drafted, my team had pinstriped jerseys which was pretty cool). First game I went to was actually his MSG debut. Bandwagoned the Lakers when he signed there, have stuck with them since (though when he was traded to Miami, developed a soft spot for them, and Wade in particular). Never got into the Knicks much, but have a ton of respect for what they did. Monstrous defensive teams. I'll pull for both of them if they're not playing the Lakers. Went to a bunch of Dubs games while in college, especially when LA came up (I've only actually seen a couple games in person in LA, though I've seen the Lakers in person a handful of times each when they've played GSW/NYK/BRK over the years). Been pulling for the Clippers more than Warriors with the Lakers down (I know most go the other way, guess not having that LA connection makes it easier for me to pull for the other team in town). Hoping we can get a solid draft pick this year, and have better luck in free agency in 2015 and 2016.
Very nice! What's the story behind the username?

Thanks. Nothing super interesting, just my initials (F.P.L.III). Needed a 6-8 character username when registering for something a few years back, tried my last name first (8 chars), was taken, so went with that.
Now that's the difference between first and last place.

Re: PC Board OT thread
Late to the Happy New Year Party, but I truly hope everyone had an awesome time.
Between Dec. 26th and NYE I was away at my camp doing what I do. Had an awesome time skiing, bowling, playing games, and just having a great time with these kids. Got to play some wheelchair sports too, which I thoroughly recommend everyone try if you ever get the opportunity. Apart from basketball, I think I have more fun in the wheelchair versions of sports than I do in the actual versions. Awesome stuff.
Then on NYE we sent the kids home and the counselors partied hard. Went to a local bar in the small town and scared the townies away because we were wearing pajamas, dancing like idiots, and singing camp songs obnoxiously loud. Can't think of a better group of people to spend time with. It's Jan. 2 and I'm still getting over the hangover and the lack of sleep over the past week.
Resolutions? Mine is to be more outgoing and social, which is my last big area of self-improvement. Definitely something to work on. And I'm making a mini-resolution to be consistent about posting here often because I love talking ball with you guys.
Anyway, happy new year everyone, hope 2015 is the best year yet.

Im a 40 year old guy back in college. Dropped out the first time around to tour with a ska band. Made almost no money but great experience I wouldn't take back. Then played online poker professionally for a long time--like printing money for several years before the games got tougher prior to Black Friday. If you think the math guys here are hard-core, you have no idea. I learned the math because it got to where you had to, but was more of a "feel" player.
As far as basketball goes, have long loved it and played it. Was never a star, but always managed to get serious playtime as a defensive specialist. Am long and was quick. Now Im a screen setter with a decent set shot and I gobble up rebounds. My greatest moment in basketball was getting absolutely run over and dunked on by Kenyon Martin in a pickup game where not only did I end up on my butt under the basket but ended up with a broken nose and much mockery....
Posts like this suggest i should spend more time on this board, especially when the GB starts to eat away at your soul.
I enjoyed this.

Re: PC Board OT thread
So here's an idea I've been kicking around for a while:
We've got a pretty tremendous knowledge base and some pretty excellent writers who are regulars on this board. I think we should start an original content-focused NBA blog. This message board is fantastic for discussion, but I know plenty of members here have thoughts that would be better suited to long form content heavy pieces (myself included), and given the number of readers and lurkers here I think we could grab a decent audience right off the bat. Basketball fans flock to this board to read what we have to post, so obviously there's value to the things we're saying here.
I realize Grantland probably has the "bunch of smart dudes talking about basketball" niche basically monopolized, but they've shown there's obviously a demand for this kind of content, and honestly some of the stuff I see here is every bit as interesting as your average Goldsberry article.
I've always had the idea of starting an NBA blog, but I don't think I'm dedicated or talented enough to keep it afloat by myself. But if we had a small group of regulars here providing content fairly often, I think we could really have something eventually. I have some members in mind that I'd really like to hop on, but I'll see if this idea gets any traction first. We've got some great statisticians, some true historians, and some brilliant high-concept thinkers and writers.
Anyway, it's something I've been thinking about and I thought I'd toss it out there to gauge interest.

There are some blogs already going by several of our regulars, maybe a thread linking them would be useful?

I'd be down to help. I realize my opinions are not in sync with a lot of popular members on here but if you'd want me I'd love to join. Semester is generally chill except for midterms and finals so I can be active for most of the time.

I would be down too if you think I could contribute. I too have thought of running a sports/NBA blog for a long time but always put it off due to general laziness and the fact that I wouldn't want to start a blog without updating it regularly. If we get a bunch of members from here it will be cool to contribute and write something once every few days while being able to keep the blog fresh and updated.

You'd definitely get a lot of people willing to write for that. Getting a group of up to 10-20 posters with majorly differing but valid opinions would be key for great content. It'll have more content and potential to grow than most blogs due to having a ton of writers.

Re: PC Board OT thread
Hey all,
So I'm about 3/4ths done with the first draft of what's going to be my first blog post- a brief profile and analysis of the Atlanta Hawks. It's long, and there are a bunch of pictures and videos, but I think it's pretty decent work and I know you guys love to read about basketball. Feedback would be much appreciated- tell me what worked and what doesn't.
My last section is going to be an analysis of the 4th quarter against Memphis and a tidy conclusion that ties the whole "probability" thread into a bow (hopefully) but I'm not spending any more time writing today. Document is a download from dropbox and should work with the most recent version of Word and Pages (including video- let me know if it doesn't).
Thanks guys, and give me some feedback!
