Re: Josh Smith - Would you take the risk?
I'm not sure how anything works when it comes to the financial side of things but maybe one of you guys could explain.
If Josh Smith is willing, we can sign him at the vet min if we get rid of a player?
What happens at the end of the season? Do we just let him walk away or is there a feasible way to re-sign him?
My concern is, besides the fact he isn't a good fit for us, we are thinking too short term and we should be making moves for players that we can continue to build chemistry with next year.

He would likely only sign for a vet minimum for this season, as he can no doubt earn more on the open market in the summer. If we sign him for this season, I believe we won't hold bird rights and would have to use salary cap space if were to give him a new contract.

it doesn't matter what Josh wants to get paid, he will get paid the exact same amount of dollars.
whomever signs Josh will simply be deducting from the still owed salary of the pistons. in other words,
Piston's guaranteed contract - Josh's next two years contract to play elsewhere = his salary = the original Detroit's salary.
he can sign with a vet's minimum or for the mid level, all that will make difference is how much the pistons pay Josh Smith. it makes absolutely no difference to Josh himself.
ehhhhh f it.

i believe the situation does not change next season, as he would still be under the Piston's original contract and there are no reasons for any team to pay him a cent more than the minimum as the Pistons will still be subsidizing him. besides, he would be an idiot to sign a long term deal a year before the new TV deal which will increase the cap across the league, while still getting the same pay the first year as of the pistons deal.
ehhhhh f it.

Re: Josh Smith - Would you take the risk?
I think any salary anyone else pays is in addition to Pistons salary, so although he could take the min with someone, he could also look for a one or two year deal at say, $8m a year, which isn't a huge reach if he can put on a decent showing for whoever picks him up.Neddy wrote:Sofia wrote:LACtdom wrote:I'm not sure how anything works when it comes to the financial side of things but maybe one of you guys could explain.

So basically his decision is not a financial one, it's about who he thinks he can win with/ get playing time?
The rumours say he has been friends with Howard since pre-school. The rockets can offer him a starting PF position on a contender with his friend. Unless he really wants to play SF I don't see why he would choose us over the Rockets.

yeah i was about to post this too. talking about his contact is a moot point with us, as i too believe he is going to be a rocket.

It seems like all we do is sit around the waiver-wire waiting for some magical free-agent to come rescue these guys.
NOBODY is coming to save this team.
CP3, Blake, DJ...that's the core, everyone else is just role-playing (and we aren't a role-player away from winning a championship) -- either the core we have figures it out or they get used to going home in the 1st or 2nd round for the rest of their careers.

Not a surprise. People expecting waiver wire vets to help us are kidding themselves. We need youth, and we're not contenders, so why would vets sign with us anyway?

DJ and CP3 certainly aren't part of a core that's ever winning a championship.

This is bad news for us. Not only letting Josh Smith get away, but him going to a rival. This may tip the scales in Houstons favor at the very least it makes them a favorite against us if we match up against them in the playoffs.

Re: Josh Smith - Would you take the risk?
I dunno. I wouldn't worry too much about a guy who's been shooting 41.7 true shooting %. this rocket team only have Beverley and Harden from outside and Ariza is shooting like 50% trueshooting and 33% 3pts? along with Howard spacing will become an issue at some point through out the season. they will be good, don't get me wrong, but I don't think Smoove somehow makes them the favorite or top 3 in west.

Looks like Josh Smith suffers from the Rudy Gay curse. He should have signed with the Kings.
