Game 34: @ Chicago Bulls 700pm ROOT!

The surging Chicago Bulls have established themselves as one of the teams to beat in the Eastern Conference, thanks in part to the addition of Pau Gasol.

They're set to face the Houston Rockets, who have been inconsistent of late but looked every bit like one of the top clubs in the West in their last game.

Seeking a 10th win in 11 games, the Bulls may also have Jimmy Butler back for Monday night's showdown at the United Center.

These powerhouses could be at close to full strength with Butler likely to return after missing Saturday's 109-104 overtime win over Boston to attend a funeral. The fourth-year guard, named NBA player of the week Dec. 29 along with Houston's James Harden, is averaging a career-high 21.9 points for the Central Division leaders.

The Bulls (24-10) have also gotten a huge boost from Gasol, as the four-time All-Star is averaging 18.0 points and a team-leading 11.2 rebounds. He scored a season high-tying 29 to go with 16 boards against the Celtics as Chicago won for the ninth time in 10 games.

"Pau has been great," center Joakim Noah told the team's official website. "He has been huge for us all season. He is one of the constants every night. He adds a whole different dimension with his scoring."

Gasol also added five blocks after swatting away a career-high nine shots two nights earlier against Denver. He's averaging a career-high 2.4 blocks and could prove to be the missing piece for a Bulls team that appears poised for a deep postseason run.

"I'm a confident guy," he said. "I'm a competitor. You always have to hope for the best and be positive and optimistic. I didn't know what was going to happen, how I was going to fit in. But I knew I was going to try and do my best to provide everything and give us the best chance to win a title."

The Rockets (23-10) also have championship aspirations thanks largely to Harden, who leads the league with 27.2 points per game. He's averaged 30.3 in the past 13 games and shot 54.1 percent in the last seven.

Despite Harden's efforts, Houston has dropped five of nine. The Rockets suffered their most lopsided defeat of the season Friday, 111-83 at New Orleans before bouncing back with a 115-79 rout of Miami the following night.

"The effort and the energy was just a little bit different," center Dwight Howard said. "I don't know what happened in that game (Friday night), but it happened ... we've got to make sure that it doesn't happen again."

Howard had 23 points and 13 rebounds after averaging 12.0 and 6.0 in the previous three games. He's averaged 14.8 points in his last four against Chicago but could be extra motivated going up against Gasol -- his former Lakers teammate.

The Rockets had taken four straight from Chicago before falling 111-87 in their last visit March 13. Howard had 12 points, 10 rebounds and seven turnovers while Harden finished with eight points and shot 2 of 7.

Harden has averaged 20.3 points in four meetings with the Bulls over the previous two seasons. He averaged 25.7 overall in that span.

Derrick Rose has scored 30.0 points per game in his last three against the Rockets but hasn't faced them since 2010-11, when he went on to be named NBA MVP. Rose is still trying to recapture that form, averaging 12.5 points and 24.4 percent shooting in the last four contests.

The Bulls have won five straight against the West while Houston is 8-2 against East opponents, including 3-0 on the road.

Chicago could again be without forward Mike Dunleavy due to an ankle injury.

Butler vs Harden man.

Too bad James probably won't be guarding Butler. Need more epic one on one matchups in today's NBA.

I'm really looking forward to what Howard brings tonight against a pretty good interior for the Bulls.

my prediction is howard will get frustrated against bulls defense and he will pickup an offensive foul then pick up a silly foul in the next possenssion and sit on the bench and pick up a technical foul and then sit for the rest of the first half

Pat Beverley looking forward to on-court reunion with Derrick Rose

It’s a matchup the people of Chicago have been waiting to see for years.

Former high school rivals and close friends on the court again, this time as NBA players.

Rockets guard Pat Beverley and Bulls guard Derrick Rose will face each other for the first time in their NBA careers on Monday night in Chicago. It will be the first time the two have played against each other in a competitive arena since they were in opposing high schools in the Chicago area a decade ago.

“It should be fun,” Beverley said with big grin. “It’s been a long time coming.”

The two have been in the league multiple years, but their paths have yet to cross. Rose missed nearly two seasons with injuries after having made a big name for himself in the league.

Beverley took a longer road, playing overseas and in the D-League before landing a starting spot with the Rockets.

“This will be the first time we have played each other,” Beverley said. “We are still really close. We text every day. We talk a lot. But when that ball is tipped, we won’t be friends for a couple of hours.”

Beverley has missed part of this season with injury – he sat 10 games with a nagging hamstring injury but is back in the starting lineup and has brought up the overall energy of the team.

Rose, too, has missed games with a hamstring injury this season. In the past, he has sat out for significant amounts of time due to knee injuries. The two have talked about their injuries.

“We talked about our injuries, about working to come back,” Beverley said. “He has been through a lot so I am really happy to see him back out there.”

Beverley is also happy to be back. He had three stints of sitting out with the hamstring issue this year. The first two times he tried coming back too early. Last time, he took his time and came back injury free.

He is averaging 10.5 points in the last 10 games, as well as 5.8 rebounds and 4.8 assists.

“His defense and energy helps us get out to better starts,” guard James Harden said. “He comes out with a lot of intensity.”

He also takes on big challenges, having to guard some of the league’s top players, like Rose on Monday night.

“I love to compete,” Beverley said. “That’s what we do. We are basketball players.”

Even when it’s against one of his oldest friends in his hometown.

“It’s always special to play in Chicago and for the first time, the city gets to see me against D. Rose,” Beverley said. “I am really looking forward to it.”

Butler could be MIP and MVP in the same year. He's a Houston kid too so it's good to see him go from last pick in the first round (#30) to being an All-Star.
Harden is still a work-in-progress. He can score, but he can't help his teammate that much - Yao Ming

I hate the Bulls. It's not really the teams fault, just their idiot fanbase from the 90's that disappeared and re-appeared then disappeared in the 90's.

"We had the G.O.A.T. playing for us blah blah blah...."

Shutup, you had the greatest SG of all time, and the guy that brought basketball into the commercial spotlight. Did Jordan ever get a quadruple double? I didn't think so.

"But he has six rings..."

"Robert Horry has seven, what's your point?"

For the record, Houston had Chicago head to head over the space of Olajuwon and MJ's career. So for all those Bulls fans that think we only got two titles because MJ retired, might want to think again. I'm pretty sure that we would have beaten Chicago in a finals series. Our weakness was Seattle.

But that's the past, the future is now. Go Rockets, I hope Harden goes bat **** crazy, and we come away with the win. Unfortunately, I'm off to work, so I'll just have to keep an eye on the game via NBA gametime App.

When we parted ways with Asik & Lin I was wondering who would step up as our "First Blood" guy.

As with so many other things this season it appears that Dream Crowe has answered that call. Dude takes a hard shot to the head at least once a game.
