OH MY GOD! WOOOOW. I never ever knew that there was a Pete Rock remix for Respiration...

Respiration is probably one of my 10 favorite songs ever. And, god, I love Pete Rock remixes. I feel bad for not knowing that this existed. Thanks, Snidely!

(BTW, there's nobody out there who can be as fitting when talking in the background as Pete Rock. That's how you generally ruin songs. Puffy makes Ready to Die 25% less likeable. Yet, Pete just has the perfect mellow voice and feel of a producer for his background ad-libs to sound good and spot-on. Not to mention how much I love his signature intro of "another Pete Rock remix".

one of these days, when I'll have the time for it, I will just have to go through all of Pete Rock's trackology so I would know tracks like this one.

did that with Premo years ago. now I have all of his production on my iTunes library.

B4.DA.$$ is very good, and although I anticipated more hard-hitting songs like Christ Conscious, in the end it's still a very satisfying album. Love Paper Trail$ in particular, along with the singles which are all awesome.

But that was more or less what I was anticipating, the story of his week to me is that Lupe Fiasco's new album is so fricking great. So glad he got to do what he wanted with what seems like much less input from Atlantic than his last 2 albums (which I completely hated). Really happy that he seems to be back on track, Hip-Hop needs an artistically free Lupe Fiasco.

wow. cool stuff.

I had forgot about the upcoming BADBADNOTGOOD and Ghostface collab.

Great to see DOOM on this track as well. Makes me more helpful that the Ghost and DOOM album will happen one day.

hard-hitting is right.

"Give me that beat and I'll put you next to Dilla"

:o

damn. if these were the 90s, I'd be expecting a Detroit emcee dissing him any minute now. even if the line kind of has a double-meaning. can easily be taken as something a bit disrespectful and distasteful.

the first listen of the album had me feeling like all of the songs blended into one. it seemed just "okay".

took the second listen while on a intercity bus, on a beautiful morning and was instantly hooked.

whatever "it" is, Joey has it. he's one damn good emcee. I love how he can change up from his laid-back voice to that commanding flow on "No. 99" and "Christ Conscious". He's able to switch up speeds faster than Bruce Lee riding a Fuji in a movie, can randomly sing one line out and then get back to rapping or change his flow throughout the song. Almost reminds me of Method Man's abilities.

While I enjoy his delivery and word-play, he certainly isn't an outstanding lyricist. But his technique and versatility certainly makes up for it. When the metaphors aren't that ingenious, they still seem impressive because of the way he's able to quickly and wittingly drop those lines.

With all due respect to some emcees, ones that I even love, sometimes it can just get on your nerves when some abstract hip hop artist goes on for 70mins about capitalism without any change in his delivery or choruses. Joey, on the other hand, is entertaining to listen to as he changes up frequently.

All in all, a **** great album. Doesn't feel like there's any filler tracks. Plenty of different types of songs, whether it's a cool chorus by some singer ("Teach Me", per example, which I love) or that Jamaican-type of rapping on one track (I think it was "Escape 120").

The overall jazzy vibe is also cool. The whole release seems cohesive, even if the fore-mentioned versatility is there.

Favorite songs: Big Dusty, Hazeus View, No. 99, Christ Conscious, OCB, Curry Chicken, Teach Me.

An early candidate for album of the year. I liked Joey before, but this album convinced me that he has that "charisma" or whatever you want to call it that a good emcee has to have.

Completely agree on this, I was actually fairly disappointed after the first listen but it's a really good album. Like you said, I love the diversity of his flows/deliveries, even though I prefer when he's at his most agressive personally (I'm one of the very few that preferred Summer Knights over 1999 because of that).

It's not a transcendent album, he's not doing anything that I haven't heard before, but he does it extremely well and it's still a very good album. I think Lupe's album ended up being the better one though, which I would never have expected.
