Finals push this season. To add players or not?
The question is with the team playing so well do we want to not mess with chemistry and go to the playoffs with the current squad.
Or should we go and acquire new players using the available cap space & trade assets (Nets picks, Payne?) to make a legit push at winning the East and thereby making the NBA finals.
In an ideal world, I would like to upgrade the backup SG position and backup C position by replacing Bazemore and Brand or Antic.
Bazemore has been disappointing thus far as a Hawk. He is not a good shooter so I don't think its been an ideal fit for coach Bud offense. (Thabo can't shoot too but at least he brings D.)
Brand is too old and lacks size for a center. Antic too has been disappointing compared to last season, but I wouldn't mind keeping him as depth as he can hit the occasional three and his D is OK.
So who is on the trading block (that is not a headcase like Lance Stephenson or Larry Sanders) that can help this team.

I would still love to do
Adriean Payne
For
Greg Monroe
That move wouldn't mess up any chemistry at all since payne isn't even part of the rotation. The Pistons get the 15th pick from last season for a guy that's just going to bolt after this season anyways.
Can you imagine a 3 big rotation of Millsap/Horford/Monroe

I understand the chemistry concerns however, I would be in favor of adding some size and rebounding to the squad! Denver is a team i've thought of as a team looking to re-tool. I bet they'd trade darrell arthur bc he will be an UFA this summer. Arthur brings more defensive than mike scott and more offensive then pero antic IMO.

I wouldn't make a move unless they go on a big losing streak which I doubt like when Al went down.

Personally, I would like to upgrade the short rotation players - Thabo and Antic specifically. Sure, Bazemore and Scott are worse players but they're also the 9th and 10th guys in the pecking order (... And maybe not that). I mean, how much are you really going to improve if you get an OK upgrade in the 10-15 minutes they get. Even if you're hoping to net an extra basket every 100 possessions, that's not even a 1/2-point a game... It really doesn't move the dial much. If we upgrade players we expect to play more like Antic and Thabo, we get a lot more bang for the buck...
I wouldn't mind putting Scott, Jenkins, and a heavily prottected 1st on the table for Monroe. Jenkins and Scott add some outside shooting and the D isn't as much of an issue with Drummond and DET saves some face by getting a 1st back even if it comes in a couple of years and is very late.
Seen this posted a few times, but this is a truly terrible trade. I realize that Payne isn't doing sh__, but the reality here is that you're dealing Millsap + Payne for Monroe since you can't sign both Millsap and Monroe in the offseason (unless we look to make another Lou+ for nothing deal). It'd be much more advantageous to simply go to FA - if one guy is getting big offers, then land the other.PMOTT3 wrote:I would still love to do

Stick with this team. We need to add Tavares next year and get rid of Brand. Also get rid of John Jenkins and draft Caris Levert, Mario H, or R.J. Hunter. We need a backup SG with potential to be good or very good at SG. I love Korver but he's getting up their in age and Bazemore doesn't have starting potential. He's a 3rd string SG who can play in situations.

Knicks to cut Dalembert possibly?
http://espn.go.com/nba/player/_/id/991/samuel-dalembert
Id love to pick him up as a capable backup.

Based on what we saw last year, I see no move being made despite how bad we needed another big. We wore down Sap and Brand at the end with Antic having injuries as well.
I won't believe a big will be added until we see it. With a potential change in ownership also?

Re: Finals push this season. To add players or not?
Those would be my moves for now and this summer:
I would blindly sent Payne to the Pistons for Monroe. I would try to get someone who can shoot from outside and defend, as we have Carroll, Korver and Sefolosha, but one of them could get injured and Bazemore is not such a good replacement. But this second move would be very, very secondary.
Then over the summer I would try to extend Millsap and Monroe, of course, and move Horford. I do not like the way he plays. He looks more and more rusty, slow and he is very predictable. He is unable to score inside against true Cs and right now I believe he is unable to play the PF spot, as he is slow, not very agile and his shooting is really rusty and reaaaaally slow...

Re: Finals push this season. To add players or not?
Disagree about Horford. Of course he looked pretty bad for about 10 games, but hes played well last few weeks.
Last 10 games:
51% FG Shooting
14ppg
6REB
1.5 Blocks
Hes still VERY good. my only fear is what happens when his athleticism leaves him Not sure he will have the post game to operate. But hes 2 years younger than Millsap. His outside shot is awkward and slow but its MONEY and hes so tall and the release is SO HIGH, he faces up and can shoot OVER 7 footers which is a great asset to have in this offense (drawing the big guy out of the lane). And hes GREAT on PnR and help defense.

Yeah I don't know where that came from with Horford. Maybe 2-3 weeks into the season but he has been a rock every since then. Monroe is a worse defender, worse passer, worse jump shooter, and will probably cost more money.

Because Ferry's on indefinite leave we probably won't make a move. Bud is the GM but I'd be absolutely shocked if he made any big moves, he's just there as a caretaker until Ferry comes back or a replacement GM comes in.

I'd take Branden Wright over Dalembert.....every day.
Would it push us over the cap?

Basketball insiders says we have $3,026,956 avail for cap space........so we'd have to move someone...not likely to take place.

Re: Finals push this season. To add players or not?
I was thinking about Dalembert as well, but my guess is that he would take Brand's spot on the roster (since Antic and Muscala bring different skill sets to the table). And from everything I've heard, Brand is a far superior PROFESSIONAL to Dalembert, so that may be reason enough not to make a move. What Brand brings to the team off the court may be worth more to Bud than the extra block or rebound per game that Dalembert can bring on the court.

Re: Finals push this season. To add players or not?
I believe the hawks should only look to add bench players because their starters are all very productive and have a wonderful chemistry right now. Look to improve athletically. We have plenty of floor spacers but what we don't have is an explosive athlete, preferably one who can at least hit the occasional three. Someone with a little size who can attack the rim. A slasher. Someone who is available without giving away cap/roster flexibility. Someone like Glenn Rice Jr. He was recently cut by Washington basically because they have a surplus of wing talent and were looking to save on his non guaranteed contract. At 6'6 and 220-ish he could play some SF and SG. He is a good shooter with his feet set and is much more explosive than any other wing player the hawks have. Plus, he won't cost much and won't complain about minutes since he was unemployed before.

Nobody we bring in now will get significant minutes. Time and understanding to learn the system particularly defensively would put the team at a disadvantage.
