Winston made some ill advised throws in games this year, but those interceptions were almost all in the first half of games on throws Winston should have never made. He will have to clean that up. But, he is excellent at reading defenses quickly and getting the ball out to the right receiver. He can make all the throws and has excellent touch when he needs to get the ball into tight spaces.

The so called experts love Mariota because of the year he had, but a lot of what he does doesn't translate to the NFL. And what he does poorly is an absolute killer in the NFL. There is not a really good QB in the NFL who is inaccurate. Not one.

To add to that, Mariota threw 17 passes in the first half against FSU within five yards. He was 4 for 10 throwing farther than 10 yards.

Yep. Inaccuracy down the field will not fly in the NFL.

Of course, overall he completed 68% and threw only 3 interceptions. It's hard to believe accuracy was a significant issue. For the most part, the ball went where he intended it. I'd like to see some season stats on his downfield passing.

Apples and oranges. Have you watched Oregon? He almost never has to throw balls into tight windows. There is so much misdirection in that offense, that he is often times throwing to guys who are 5 yards ahead of the defender. He also throws a lot of short and intermediate routes.

I agree he's not being forced to throw into tight windows, but he does seem to be accurate with the throws he does attempt. At least that's what the stats say. That's why I'd be interested see the numbers downfield.

I don't necessarily buy this. I think there's a good chance Cardale is the starter next year. Not only was he better than Barrett when he finally got to play, but I don't believe for a second that Cardale decided not to declare with no playing time assurances.

cardale wasnt better, particularly in playoffs. he showed poise late in games and did a good job keeping the team together, but it is obvious he is not as effective runner as barrett in spread option and his decision making is questionable. at this point barrett is a tier above as a college qb and osu staff is aware of this.

him returning has more to do with not garnering enough interest from nfl, he is essentially gambling on barrett's health instead of late round/udfa route.

Barrett set a Big 10 record for total touchdowns and was a Heisman candidate so it's tough to say Cardale was better.

Barrett was really great for Ohio State, but what Cardale did in his three games was insane. He has such tremendous upside that even if he isn't already better than Barrett, he can move past him with more time. Also, it is probably worth noting that Ohio State's best chance of keeping one from transferring is to start the older player and let the younger, Barrett, sit for a year.

I also don't buy for a second that Cardale returned to school because he thought he'd be a 7th rounder or undrafted. There is no chance he would have fallen anywhere near that far in this year's weak QB class. He could have easily gone in the 2nd round and never would have fallen past the 4th. Returning is a huge gamble if he hasn't been promised playing time.
