Fernando Torres returned to Atlético Madrid, his boyhood club, and played 58 minutes in a 2-0 win over Real Madrid.
Torres had never defeated Real Madrid during his previous nine matches against the club during his previous time with Atleti.
Under Diego Simeone, they have won three and drawn one of the last four meetings against Real Madrid.
Torres was given a start three days after 40,000 fans attended his presentation.
“I had butterflies during my presentation and again tonight and I think I will have for some time,” he admitted.
Simeone had insisted: “If I didn’t think he was fit and ready, I would not play him.” He has also been enthusiastic about the fact that Torres’s arrival increases the “sense of belonging” that he says he is trying to build at the club.
