Re: Kaepernick will train with Kurt Warner
Colin Kaepernick - QB - 49ers
Colin Kaepernick will train with Kurt Warner at EXOS performance in Phoenix this offseason.
Kaepernick is pulling out all the stops after his worst season as a pro. He completed just 60.5 percent of his throws with a career-worst 86.4 passer rating. He was also sacked a league-high 52 times. Previously, Kaepernick worked out casually with other players and on his own in the offseason, so this is new for him. Warner will specifically work with Kaepernick on film study and 7-on-7 drills. It'll be the start of what should be an interesting offseason for Keapernick. The 49ers may overhaul their offense and could lose free agent Michael Crabtree.

Man i sure hope Warner teaches him how to read some defenses. I don't see an over haul coming tho. I guess if that means no Crabtree and Iupati?

As critical as I was of how Kap spent his last offseason, that statement simply isn't true. He was at an organized camp for almost the entire offseason, it just wasn't one that was particularly geared toward working on passing.

Re: Kaepernick will train with Kurt Warner
Thought this was interesting:
Gile said one area he will try to focus on is Kaepernick’s upper body.
“If I could get him to be a little more relaxed at times, I think that would help him,” he said.

I wonder if they'll try to get him to lay off the weights a bit this offseason.

Re: Kaepernick will train with Kurt Warner
I recall Warner saying what a good experience playing Arena was for him from the standpoint of having to make quick decisions and play fast so I can see him being a pretty good choice as a teacher in that regard for Kap.
And I do recall Harbaugh warning Kap about not getting too "jacked up" with his upper body and it seems Gile feels that's an issue as well.

I think the focus should be more on "smart decisions" as opposed to "quick decisions". There were times where Kaepernick would be given time by the offensive linemen, yet he was not able to find anyone to throw to. I'm not sure how he can do it, but the guy needs to learn to scan the field better (not necessarily quicker).

Well quicker too. And neither one will ever happen.

Re: Kaepernick will train with Kurt Warner
It at least shows Kaep is willing to try and improve on being a quatrterback this year rather than trying to get buff... Heres to hoping it helps. The fact hes willing to do this at least gives me hope he might improve.

Re: Kaepernick will train with Kurt Warner
I don't know if this has been posted in any of the Kaepernick articles to have come out. I hadn't seen it in any of them yet, or maybe I just forgot if I did, but Adam Caplan is reporting today that Trent Dilfer will be at these sessions (didn't specify if he'd attend all of them) and Steve Young "will be popping in" to them as well. He didn't specify to what capacity or what role each will have in working with him but I wouldn't expect it to quite as much as the aforementioned names obviously.
Side note on Steve Young for those that haven't heard or read about Young as a mentor/coach. Young has kind of developed the reputation from a number of quarterbacks who have worked with him that he isn't the best TEACHER of quarterbacks but he's very supportive and can be good to talk to and bounce things off of in an emotional support role. It's a somewhat educated feeling but an even bigger uneducated guess but a part of me would be surprised if Young would ever hit it off in a coach/mentor type role/relationship with Kaepernick.
Dilfer, on the other hand, is somebody that I honestly think could get into coaching someday and there have been a high number of personnel men and players who have echoed those feelings numerous times. Mike Nolan even said that someday he would possibly jump at the chance at hiring him in some capacity if he ever had the chance to do so. The thing about that is Dilfer is so dynamic on TV and it's easy to see that he may soar up the ranks at ESPN or could be in line for a huge bump somewhere else on TV that he may never make his way into coaching. Plus he's been wishy-washy about it before partially because he'd have to give up working with young kids which he loves to do when he can, among other things.
I could see Dilfer connecting with and being better for Kaepernick on the non-mental side much more than I could see Young being beneficial to him. Although, if I had to throw in the mental side of things I just feel like Dilfer might be able to connect better with Kaepernick than Young would be able to there, too.

Re: Kaepernick will train with Kurt Warner
Warner said on ESPN this morning that Kaepernick team didn't call him nor his agents. Kaepernick joined the facility or program first and then the program called Warner. I'm not posting this to make any claim or say anything about it, only posting because I heard it.

In a CSN Bay Area article this morning, Warner stated he approached Kaepernick and other QBs and offered his help and Kaepernick was the only one to take him up on it.

Makes sense. A number of relationships are formed this way and not just quarterback relationships either. Many a times an agent will set up a meet-and-greet and then some kind of session beyond that before players start to meet together more casually.

It's hard for some of the greatest players to teach because it's hard to put everything down into words. You see things differently. You instinctively feel things when you're out there. It's kind of like why I don't think Michael Jordan could ever teach the game.

And the Jerry Rice as 49ers WRs coach argument that I've seen on more than one 49ers message board for years has irritated me like you wouldn't believe. I'm not sure he'd quite be as bad of a WRs coach as he was an NFL ESPN analyst but I'd be surprised if he'd make a good hire like many others think he would be.
