The 3 guys I cut before 2015.
Henry Melton. He didn't seem to be much better than those he is playing with & will count over 9 mil. if we keep him. Add in if they went with my wish list, we will be drafting a DL in the 1st round. We could afford to release him & cant see keeping him at this price tag.
Doug Free. Parnell has played decent while Free was out with injury. With Free having a 11+ mil cap hit if we keep him. Don't see that happening at this price tag.
Now for my 3rd. I am not sure if this will happen due to the large amount of cap hit, but I want it too. problem is who replaces him if he is cut. We would have to find a cheap guy or a very long term guy, which I cant see happening unless we got lucky in the draft. Anyways my 3rd guy is Brandon Carr.
Melton
Cap hit if we keep him 9,250,250
Dead money if cut 750,750
Savings of 8,499,500 to cap (no brainer)
Free
Cap hit 11,020,000
Dead money 3,980,000
Savings 7,040,000 (also no brainer to me)
Carr
Cap hit 12,717,000
Dead money 12,151,000
Savings 566,000 (hoping we have cap space to cut him, but might have to keep him)
these 3 cuts saves 15,595,500 to replace those three spots.
Think it is doable. The DL replacement will probably come from the draft (cheap) Whoever ends up the back up tackle probably wont cost much, which should leave enough money for a servicable DB (not a huge name guy) That should even leave some extra money for our other signings we will need to deal with.

if we only save 500k theres no point in cutting carr. he really started coming on late in the season

depends who the other option ended up being. if it is an improvement (which we have to improve our DBs) I don't mind paying a little more to improve the spot.
Save 500+k then pick someone up for around a mil. it only costs us 500k to make improvements. Like I said. depends on who is out there & what they would cost, but if we keep him, we do not improve the spot, & he ends up as dead money the following year.
Rather improve the spot this coming year.
I think one of the reasons he doesn't get benched is his price tag, well two reasons, we don't have stellar guys behind him to force a benching.
BTW if he stays in 2016 his cap hit would be 13,817,000

Free and Melton are Free Agents. No need to cut them. Ad of now they don't count against our 2015 cap.

Re: The 3 guys I cut before 2015.
can you think of someone we can bring in for 1 million that would be clearly better than Carr? I still don't think our DBs are the biggest problem on this defense. Our biggest problem has been getting pressure on the Qb. If Church and JJ continue to mature and improve they should make our backend pretty good. Mo has been a bust thus far.
Our linebackers should be pretty good. Lee will be back, we need to keep McClain, and Carter. Would be nice to be able to keep Durant too but I don't see that happening.
A full offseason for Demarcus and Brent should do wonders for them.
Draft we need to take best player on the board regardless of who that maybe..... QB included time to start planning Romo probably only has 3 or 4 season left in him as a starter.

Right now I'd say the #1 need us a pocket collasping DT. 2nd priority is a DE. Now if there's a CB of great value I'd rather see him vs reaching for DL.

well we have options on them whether it is officially cut or whatever. We have a contract for them to play for us next year & shouldn't bring them back. To-mato Tom-ato

No Dallas doesnt have options on them. They are no longer under contract with the Cowboys and are UFA. Dallas can tag one player but these players (at this moment) are not officially Cowboy players.
Dez Bryant, Demarco Murray, Doug Free, Jeremy Parnell, Bruce Carter, Justin Durant, Anthony Spencer, George Selvie, Nick Hayden, Rolando McClain, Dawayne Harris, Sterling Moore, Chris Jones
THe following are also FA but restricted
Lance Dunbar, Cole Beasley, Ron Leary

Actually Dallas does have a 3 year team option on Melton but the price is way too high to bring him back. Melton played well enough to show he can still be a NFL DT and will play somewhere. Just don't see thar somewhere being in Dallas on for the amount of the option years. I believe if Dallas pick up the option all 3 years are guaranteed.

actually yes Dallas has options on Free & Melton. Cap hit would be 11+ mil for Free & 9+ for melton. I didn't invent those #'s

The only way Melton his a cap hit for Dallas is IF Dallas picks up his option. I will step out on a limb and say Jerry will not do this.
cowboysblog.dallasnews.com/2014/03/full-breakdown-of-new-dallas-cowboys-dt-henry-meltons-contract-shows-hell-have-plenty-of-motivation-to-stay-healthy-perform-well.html/
The breakdown is in on Melton’s one-year contract that carries a three-year option. According to a source, he can make as little as $2.25 million this season and as much as $29 million over the next four seasons.
After 2014, the Cowboys have the option to extend Melton’s contract for three seasons. If Melton is on the Cowboys’ roster on the first day of the new league year next March, he’ll be signed through 2017.

Re: The 3 guys I cut before 2015.
Free is a little complicated. His two year contract he signed in 13 is done, but the team has two one year options.
When Free took that paycut to stay in the team I remember was getting guaranteed money and if I remember right it sounded as though Dallas would financially be forced to pick up the 2015 option. It they don't he's a UFA this conning march.

yes, & I say we let him walk. His salary would be 8 mil. (cap hit 11+) let him go & the cap hit is just under 4 mil.

Considering he played pretty well and NFL OT's don't just grow on trees why cut him and pay 3M over his salary? Wouldnt the wise move be to keep the 3 OT's we had on case of injury. If we would safe $$$$ ok lay him go, but the numbers you post would lead me to keeping him.
We'd still have to replace him right? That means we'd pay Free 11M and another low end OT about 4M meaning we'd have 15M tied up in that roster spot. Financially it makes no sense.

no if we let him go we aren't paying anything, but his cap hit would be just under 4 mil. I think of Free as nothing real special & another year older. Think Parnell can do what Free is doing & we would have to pick up a back up Tackle. Way cheaper than paying Free 11 mil. & then have to resign Parnell as well. We are gonna have Cap casualties, & I am certain Free & Melton will be on that list. (barring them taking a pay cut which for Free would be again)

LOL....you're the man Earl!
Nets is holding cap camp on the hoop, it's now his time of year......agenda's remain the very worst of all
Melton is a no brainer. Crawford owns that position...maybe melton signes for the minimum to stay in Dallas another year after he tests the market. Kid loves the DFW area...we'll see.
I'll put this out there first... and I loved what Ro McClain did in Dallas this season. Unless he wants to stay in Dallas and sign a short term team friendly deal...he's not worth a mid range investment IMO, not how this ended he's not. Now Carter showed those measurables this season and has big time NFL talent. He still gives less than max effort at times and hangs is head, but with Lee and Hutchins around him, I'd sign Carter first and followed by Durant.
I'd keep Carr and laugh all you want.... but I haven't turned in the towel on Mo. I still draft DB talent somewhat early and if that's a keeper corner, Carr plays safety. DB depth is required in this league...least IMO.
Good year....best feeling about being a Cowboy fan in plus 15 years.
GO COWBOYS.....

Wow you actually agree with me or vice versa on MCClain. Carr was the one DB that decided to show up yesterday I thought. I still can't get over Moore and his reaction to that last TD pass.

I'm not sure where you get that # from on Free. If we cut Free he has like $4M in dead money. There is no chance he or Melton will be here at their current values. I'm sure we discuss significant reductions with both to keep them. No idea where I draw the line in the sand on either right now, but i'm fine with moving on from both if we find a better use for the $'s. Need to see what other plans we have first.
Carr is a tough one. If he is cut it will be post 6/1. He played pretty darn good the last few weeks. That doesn't make him worth what we are paying him of course, but we can't go back and not do the renegotiation on his contract from 2 years ago. So he only has to be worth keeping for one more year rather than cutting. The contract #'s are set up so we keep him one more year. That's a tough one for me right now.
