Rose saves best for last
Interesting little video.
http://espn.go.com/blog/truehoop/post/_ ... t-for-last
- 10.7 number of drives to the basket per 36 minutes in the fourth quarter
- In comparison he drives on average 6.7 in the first, 9.5 in the second, and 6.2 in the third per 36.
- Averages 26.6 points every 36 minutes in the fourth quarter, per 36 minutes in the other 3 quarters, 19.7 points
- In the fourth quarter (with Derrick) Bulls are +91
It's been clear as day that Derrick ramps it up in the fourth, but interesting to see the numbers. The main point for me is that he is more than capable of being his old self as he has shown signs, especially in the fourth, and now it's a matter of him putting it all together and playing a full game consistently.

Agree with everything Kulaz said except for one thing:
He doesnt ramp it up in the 4th. He ramps it down for the first three. Then he becomes himself in the 4th.
Big, big difference.
I dont really mind that approach in the regular season; but I do not want to see him dogging it in the playoffs. He's got to be "GO-GO-GO".

Yep. Gives us an idea of how good he could be in the playoffs, fully agressive and without minutes restrictions. His mid range shot needs to come back too

Yep, that's probably a better way to put it. He definitely seems to be holding himself back (dogging it) for the first 3 quarters, before he decides to exert himself more when the game is on the line. I do think that while he may not want to exert himself physically on the offensive end as much in the first three, I'd still wish he would be more aggressive in terms of getting the team going with his play making, because he has been overly inconsistent with that this season.
I'm OK with him holding back attacking the basket if need be, but don't back EVERYTHING, including your defense, as well as making plays for others.

Re: Rose saves best for last
I would like to see more ramping up--more than just the 4th--or he won't really have the conditioning built up for the playoffs.
Also would like to see a better defensive effort all game.
He seems like he's going 70% until 4th. On D it's more like 60%.
I understand pacing but you can't run a marathon training at 2 miles a day.
Instead of shooting 3s he should be trying to figure out how to better draw fouls--Jimmy can teach him. If you can't hit a shot you got to manufacture points to get in the game. Wade has done this for years--pump faking and drawing fouls when the shots are not falling. Rose isn't going to turn into Harden but jeez he should be able to get better at it without hurting himself.

I thought this was common knowledge, but good to see some numbers put to it. To be honest, even most fourth quarters I don't think we've seen playoff -type intensity from him, especially on D. Couple that with rust and I would posit that those fourth quarter numbers would look several degrees better if he was really getting after it like we know he can. In fourth quarters this year, Rose has just been feeling himself or doing what we call 'swaggin', not necessarily going balls to the wall.

That in a nutshell has been my issue with him this season.
How about some defense and creating some offense when you are just preserving yourself? Your team and your fans would greatly appreciate that Derrick.

I just want him to never shoot a three again and start distributing the ball more efficiently by cutting his TOs....that's all I want, he can keep his late game heroics in his back pocket if he wants.

He not only scores more efficiently when he ramps it up, but his distribution improves because he's cutting up the defense and creating opportunities. Plus his defense improves.

Thibs also buries his worst players in the 4th and puts his most trusted lineup combos on the floor. This probably helps Derrick as well and the team's 4th quarter +/-.

If only he would just stop with the off balance 3pt shots. It's bad enough that he takes so many 3's as is, but what makes it worse is he doesn't even set his feet on a good amount of them.
I wouldnt be surprised if that was a big reason why he misses so many of them.

To be quite honest, I've only seen him really play fantastic defense in ONE game this season, and that was in the fourth against the Rockets. He really played aggressive and smart defense that entire quarter, while also playing aggressive on the defensive end. That really was a fun quarter to watch Derrick, but alas, that was one freaking quarter.

In his MVP year, he averaged nearly 10 FTAs per game in the 4th, and 7+ assists per 36. Also, just 3.6 3PA per 36.
5.8 FTAs per 36 this season, and 4.9 assists. 7.1 3PAs (21% 3p%). (In the 4th).
He plays better but his old self? Naw. But I don't expect him to be there...

I think this is the important thing. His defense also picks up huge in the 4th and late in games.. it's like all of a sudden he's trying... and I'm still not sure whether this is good or bad for the ultimate goal. It's great that we've seen these bursts (thrusts

This is what I'm waiting for too. When Derrick is hitting that mid range shot on a consistent basis then we know he's truly "back" because he simply can't be guarded anymore. Hopefully he's close to getting back to that point.
