They won 2 games in a row without Kobe and everyone made a big deal about before going back to losing again. I think the other players were out to prove a point and played above their skis but it obviously wasn't sustainable.

They will have some cap space, a top 3-4 pick plus Randle coming back next year. We'll get a decent pick in 2016. I can see it being dealt as part of a bigger package since this team will need to make the playoffs by then.

They won't finish worse than Philly, NY or likely Minny. If they are 4th worst we still have a 17% chance of getting their pick.

I agree. Plus I'm hoping that some other teams press the "tank" button after the trade deadline when they realize they won't make the playoffs.

Might be good to trade this pick now; I think it's value is likely highest at the moment. As the year goes on, the Lakers are likely to solidify their 4th worst record, and if we have to wait for next year to get the pick it might lose a lot of value. Especially if the Lakers stock up on some FAs this offseason and put up a halfway decent record next year. The 10-12 pick is not nearly as attractive as a potential 6 pick.

Philly and NY are the 2 worst teams by far but Minny has 3 good players out in rubio, pekovic and martin. With the way wiggins and mo williams are playing I can see them playing near .500 ball the second half of the season. Imo boston and la will battle for picks 3&4. This is the year to trade that pick.

I'm curious...How is that 17% number derived?

If they finish 4th, don't they have a decent chance of getting #1, #2 or #3 in the drawing...like a cumulative 40 or 50+% chance to move up into the top 3? And then even if they don't get a number combo, it would then require two teams from 5 and "downward" to crash the top 3 ...17% is the number for the Lakers to not move into top 3 and then two teams to leap over them? 17% seems high for this to occur, but a link to these odds would put it to rest.

Edit: I found it- http://probasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/ ... isualized/

Weird, finish 4th only gives you about 34% chance to get a top 3, 9% of staying at #4 and you're very likely (37.3%) to get the #5...17.7% of dropping to #6. Cool there's hope! I'd given up.

If Kobe misses time over this, it helps us IMO. He's been awful this year with regards to efficiency, defense, and team morale.

This could be the year that Marion, Nash and Kobe all retire. End of an era. Who would have thought that with his knees Amare would have outlasted them all.

Hopefully we are due (if we miss the playoffs) for the Lakers to have the 5th worst record and for us to get the enormous stroke of luck with our own pick to get the #1 pick and get Okafor and then bump the Lakers to the 6th pick and we can go for BPA.

We don't want Kobe to retire. If he retires, they could probably get a star next year. We need Kobe's giant salary killing their cap and his personality killing any chance of drastic improvement next year.

I seriously doubt they get a star..unless it is in the draft....Okafor looks like a sure thing so if the win the lotto. But the only free agent that I could see potentially signing with them is Love if he decides to leave Cleveland, but as tough as the west is, they still won't crack the top 10 and we would still probably get like the 10th pick at worst or something.

Now if we don't get it in 2016, that could be a big problem, because I there are way more star free agents that year, and Kobe is gone for sure.

Oh, and about Kobe retiring....zero chance....just like Nash...they may not play but they are not going to deny themselves millions...in Kobe's case it would be, what 23+ million? Zero chance. He may not play, but they won't have a ton of cap space this summer....but in 2016 EVERY contract comes off the books.

I'm not saying they will get a star. I'm saying the odds go up if Kobe retires. Nobody wants to play with him. And yes, they will have a ton of cap space this summer. Only about $37 or so million committed to salary if they decline Jordan Hill's option. Most cap space in the NBA I believe outside of maybe NYC.

It's a shame for Kobe, but I can see the Lakers rallying in his absence. More touches to go around won't hurt their confidence.

But think of most of the free agents. Why would most of them join the Lakers? Like I said, maybe Love, but is he going to lead them to much glory in the west? Kobe is not going to retire. Even if he did, it would be in some sort of buy out situation but he still will be on their cap. But even if they cleared that space somehow, they are not going to come close to cracking any sort of relevance in the west any time soon.
