A big man of his size coming off a broken foot should be obsessively careful about his weight.

Wow that does not look good at all. :o

MCW on the block.
AK47 doesn't want to play there
Embiid is the next Eddy Curry

This whole winning-whatever-it-costs culture just puts too much pressure on these young kids.

That's what comes with the money and exposure.

Yes, not having Andrei Kirlienko right now is really destroying our franchise.

It will be his rookie year, even if he plays at his potential, he has always had a problem getting in foul trouble.

He was 265 at the combine. Broke his foot. Probably have added about 20 or so pounds since then due to inactivity.

Not worried about the weight, the attitude issues are more concerning and even that doesn't bother me.

It just feels ever since the whole narrative of worst team of all time was lost, the Philly media has been searching for juicy stories every week....and failing.

But here are the definite truths.

Embiid came to the United States as a high school junior to play basketball. Now, for the first time, he has to deal with not being able to play the sport he learned to love.

On top of that, the former Kansas standout is about 6,000 miles from home. Having the support of teammates, especially Mbah a Moute, is good. But there's nothing like having your family around during tough times.

And it has been tough for Embiid, who's still dealing with the loss of his younger brother Arthur. The 13-year-old died in a car accident in October in Africa.

Playing in actual games would be a good way to help him cope. However, the closest he has gotten is participating in pregame shooting drills.

Because of the foot injury, his conditioning has been limited. Embiid can only do things such as use the antigravity treadmill and take long walks to generate a rapid heart rate. In the process, he has become noticeably heavier than the chiseled 250 pounds he carried in college.

The Sixers are trying to address the added weight. Embiid, however, hasn't always been a willing workout participant, according to sources. He's even blown off conditioning drills, one source added.

An altercation with Davis during the West Coast trip, coupled with Brown's wanting him to be in "more of a structured, stable environment," pushed the Sixers to send him home, the sources said.

Because he's not practicing, Embiid is unable to give his side of the story. Maybe that's all for the best. Brown said Embiid "has been good trying to get back on track with his conditioning."

He's been dealing with a lot. There aren't much exercises you could do with a broken foot. He also recently had his brother pass away.

Is it concerning? It could be. I'm gonna wait a bit before coming to a conclusion though.

The whole story doesn't make him sound any less fat...

I remember Drummond went from 270 to 300 lbs in his rookie season with us.

I'd be more concerned with the behavior issues (if true) than the weight.

Yeah, him not attending conditioning drills is bit concerning.

I hate to say it, but... what's motivating him to get better? Philadelphia isn't looking to win, they are looking to get good draft picks to pair with cap space... So long as he is in shape when those things come together, the Sixers don't seem to care and neither should he.

Probably a BS story, the only evidence is that picture, and if he can't run with the foot injury, that's even questionable.

Beside that though, it's interesting to see how blatant tanking is effecting the psychology of the players and the culture. Guys not wanting to play and so on. Not sure we've ever had such a clear cut case study.

Stealing my own quote from the Wiretap thread...
Fifty pounds is a lot if that's the true number. Embiid broke a bone in his right foot and that's extremely limiting. Last April I had foot surgery for a torn tendon (100%) in that same foot, and you can't do much of anything. You can't even drive (for me, six months) because if you have to slam on the brakes, that would undo everything. I've had other injuries and broken bones, but the foot injury was the worst, by far. I gained 25 pounds. It was tough to turn the rudder back the other way, but If I can drop 25 at my age, he can get himself where he needs to be, too. And I think he will.

I never questioned his talent but he was someone I thought would "bust" because of his injury concerns. Not that he would completely be out of the league but that he would be paid around 12-15 a year and would play 30-40 games a season. I never thought he was the type of guy that would balloon but this is another strike against maintaining a healthy career.

If you can't run it's going to be tough to keep perfect conditioning, that's just a fact. He might be slacking a bit, not eating right or blowing off a work session here and there, but even if he was 100% committed he wasn't going to be anything near game-shape right now. If he's 300+ next fall it's a different story, but for now I'll let the kid recover and see where he stands once he's cleared to play.

It is vital that he keep his weight down in the long term though, no doubt about it. Big men with knee/foot issues can't afford to carry much excess weight.
