Alec Brown, a former Winona Senior High School and UW-Green Bay standout who was picked in the second round of the 2014 NBA Draft, said Tuesday night he plans to start his professional basketball career sometime in mid-February.
Brown, watching his former team play at the Lewiston Auto/Warrior Club Holiday Tournament, will spend the next six weeks in Charlotte, N.C., continuing to rehab from shoulder surgery, then he said he’ll join the Bakersfield Jam, an NBA Developmental League team affiliated with the Phoenix Suns, the team that made him the 50th overall pick in last June’s draft.
Brown, 22, dislocated his left shoulder — the same one that gave him problems during his senior season at Green Bay — while diving for a loose ball in the Suns’ final NBA Summer League game in Las Vegas in July, then had surgery shortly thereafter. The record-setting shot blocker at Green Bay and accurate 3-point shooter had a pre-draft offer to play in Spain, but the contract had a clause that allowed him to pursue an NBA opportunity first.
The NBA D-League regular season ends in early April. The championship series is held later that month. Bakersfield is second in the West Division with an 11-7 record.
So we still have his rights, even though he isn't playing overseas, right? So he couldn't be called up by anyone except us, or if we trade his rights to someone.
