Re: Official Trade Thread: New Year, New Thread, New Laughs
1. suns will not trade for anymore role players or non star players.
2. the current roster have that "I deserve" minutes attitude already as it is. Adding another player take away minutes from others would instill more internal competition or a sense of it anyways...
3. if anything suns are likely to trade multiple a players for 1 star level player.
4. if not a star player, they stay pat and trade a piece for picks.

I heard that, but like 99% of basketball talk around this time of the year it's just (fairly obvious) speculation. Dragic's dialect and passive nature is just even more fuel for potential media misinterpretation. Of course having two other great guards on the team is going to have an impact on the decision; Bledsoe and Thomas would probably have the same mindset if they were UFAs. Dragic also recently stated that he likes his 'new' role after initially being frustrated with it in the beginning, he's been exceedingly efficient off the ball and if we ignore the month of November his stats have been fairly similar to last year despite Bledsoe and Thomas being here...
I know the point of this website and thread in particular is to speculate as fans, and propagate rumors, but at the end of the day we don't know what Dragic wants. Even if Thomas is traded and the third forgotten Dragic brother is signed, Dragic may still end up sign a max contract with New York or Los Angeles because he wants to play in a major market...Doesn't sound like him, but I never expected Nash to be a Laker either.

That would be Goran and Zorans older, mildly re-tarded brother Moron Dragic.
For some reason, i see Dragic ending up with the Knicks. They will have a ton of money in FA to spend on him and will have an easier path to re-building than the Lakers will. He will be teamed up with Melo, who has a lot more years left in the league than Kobe does. I can see Spike Lee sitting courtside with his fresh new Dragic jersey on.

Nash going to LA is entirely different IMO. He went to get his final shot at a ring and to pursue his director thing that he is doing. I think the Knicks will go after Reggie Jackson harder than Dragic or they can get some Linsanity back.

I don't understand why the Suns wouldn't prefer resigning Dragic over trading Thomas. Yes Dragic is older and yes Dragic will cost more but he's also better especially for this offense than IT.
I'd rather pay $15-$18M/yr for Goran than $7M/yr for IT. Plus for a Suns management standpoint, Goran is the most exciting player on the Suns and a fan favorite. He brings more butts to games than anyone else.

It's gonna be hard for Jones to get any playing time in Houston behind Motiejunas, Smith, and Papa.
In Phoenix he would immediately be our backup PF.

I heard the comment as well on the Burns & Gambo Show Thursday or Friday. Gambo stated that Thomas' presence is something that will weigh strongly on Dragics decision about where to play next year.
With that in mind how about the following trade :
PHX: Patrick Patterson
MIL: Isaiah Thomas
TOR: Chris Middleton
If the Suns had a legit stretch big (like Frye) they would be 3-6 games better in the standings. Hornaceks system relys on that kind of specing to free up Dragic and Bledsoe. PP shoots .424 from 3 and has been terribly underutilized in TOR with a measly 12.6 Usage Rating. I also like the addition by subtraction and the possible benefits of keeping Dragic, normalizing Greens roll, and providing PT opportunities for Goodwin and Ennis.
Bucks are in the lower third of the NBA in both PPG and Offensive Rating but are top 5 for both Opponents PPG and Defensive Rating. Thomas scores in bunches and provides it at a level of efficiency that Mayo/Bayless are not at all capable of duplicating. He also reprises his role as an insurance policy for MIL in case they lose Brandon Knight this coming off season.
Raps are essentially the opposite of Milwaukie. Toronto boasts the best overall Off Rtg in the NBA and are top 5 in PPG. However they struggle guarding the perimeter and are in the bottom third in both Def Rtg and Opp PPG. They will be helped by the return of Derozen but Middleton is versatile; capable of guarding the 2, 3, and 4, he is ranked in the top 15 in Defensive Rating (100.5) and top 10 in Steal Percentage (3.0).
I would do that but Toronto wouldn't. They have a Patterson on a fantastic bargain contract, they wouldn't move him for the likes of Kris Middleton.

Re: Official Trade Thread: New Year, New Thread, New Laughs
Ok how about this basic one (with an eye to Dragic's FA):
Thomas
Plumlee
for
Calderon
Acy
Calderon would be comfortable as the third PG and is an awesome shooter especially when spotting up - so he wouldn't need the ball like IT does. Also much bigger and isn't a significant drop-off in D either cos IT ain't flash there either.
Acy is filler/another big, but plays with energy and hustle, plus he plays within himself and doesn't seem to have the delusions of grandeur that Plumlee seems to have gotten lately.
Calderon's a good team-mate too, seems like he'd be a good mentor and clubroom leader and Dragic would be more inclined to stick around knowing Calderon's not a threat like IT potentially is.
Allows Hornacek to tighten the rotation and get Wright, Bled/Drag and Len more minutes.
We're also 5-1 when Kieff grabs 10+ rebounds, can someone please tell him? Dude needs to rebound. I think he's a David West type - ie a PF with good range, passing skills and quick hands, but West still grabbed 8+ rebounds a night for a few years, Kieff isn't that far off - just needs to concentrate and box-out.

Assuming our med staff signs off on Jones' nerve issues I'm down for this easily. But I also don't see Jones behind Papa and maybe not even behind Smith at this point in his career. It depends how quickly he returns to form, although Houston may still play Smith ahead in the rotation for defensive reasons.
Jones is a good fit for our system and has upside. I'm not positive Houston wants to sell low on him though, particularly given his age.
If they say no to that, I'd offer IT/Plumlee for Terry/Jones/Capela/Pelicans 1st rd pick.
Capela would actually be a good fit as a 3rd string C locked up for a while and a guy who won't complain about minutes.
Pelicand pick gives the Suns a valuable asset that they can use to move up in the draft or use in a trade with other assets for someone else.
Terry is an expiring contract and can either be traded for a 2nd rd pick or probably be bought out so he can sign elsewhere.
http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=ps89cf5
Bledsoe//Ennis/Goodwin
Dragic/Green
Tucker/Marcus/Warren
Kieff/Jones
Len/Wright/Capela
If Suns need more bench scoring with IT gone, they can start Jones and Kieff becomes 6th man.

Would you guys do a Aminu + Ledo for Plumlee?

Cutter wrote:By nature I am not an alarmist, however I am starting to have a little concern about Hornacek having full control of this team:
1) Suns are one of the top teams getting called for technicals. From the twins constantly running their mouth, to Bledsoe and Hornacek himself getting T'd up at a high rate, this needs to stop. Of course the standard excuse is that everyone is playing with passion and that is driving the technicals, but that is BS. Horny needs to reign this in and establish authority and control of this team.
2) Marcus Morris aggressively, both in words and body language, going after Hornacek on the sidelines of a nationally televised game. All Marcus had to do was apologize and the event was over....no repercussions. Is Horny in control?
3) Archie Goodwin down in D-League talking to the media basically threatening he will ask for a trade if he doesn't get playing time next year, and expressing concern with the direction of the team. Not acceptable for Archie to do this, but I am sure there will be no accountability from Hornacek for this (I am an Archie fan btw).
4) Now scrubs like Miles Plumlee are demanding trades. This dude is a deep bench center with very marginal talent and is basically saying Hornacek is wrong to bench him and that he deserves playing time. I don't blame Hornacek for Miles asking to be traded, but it just seems to be another example of the players not really respecting the coach.
Help me guys. Am I off base with this concern and Hornacek is firmly in charge? Is this just low level turmoil inherent in a sport full of prima-donnas?
Or is the saying "where there is smoke there is fire" true in this case and Horny needs to become a stronger coach?
Maybe I'm in the minority but I disagree. It seems the guys do like him. Keep in mind, they are all young. In another year or 2 I would judge whether or not they've improved.
- Rasheed Wallace never changed but it wasn't because he disrespected the coach. It was just who he was.
It is possible that we just have a bunch of guys with short fuses on the team.
- Goodwin should be upset. We just traded for a guy who he'll fight for minutes over. That isn't the coaches fault though.
- Plumlee demanding a trade is because he's in a contract year and wants to make money. We traded for someone who's better and will take his minutes. Moving Miles makes the most sense.
- Marcus had a bad moment. This is the only one that could be questionable. He hasn't done anything before or since then so we'll have to keep an eye on him.
On the flip side, we no longer hear Isaiah Thomas being upset about minutes. He's buying into the system.

Hard and fast rules like that are just not accurate. Decisions will be based on the circumstances.
If the Suns are in control of a playoff position around the trade deadline/all star break and a deal for a star is not within reach a smaller trade seeking a stretch 4 in exchange for IT is absolutely in play.
Suns have not made the playoffs in 5 years and according to Bball Reference the Suns are 27th in attendance this year.
The organization will not throw around major pieces or compromise thier future ability to make a big deal. IT has a very limited market to begin with and the aforementioned exchange would put them in a better position for success this year.

I don't blame plumlee and Archie for wanting to play. Heck I'd worry about their competitive spirit if they didn't get upset.
The next 8 games should be the litmus test for this team and what they should do at the deadline. If they play well and look like a legit playoff team then they should explore deals that can help immediately or stand pat. If they fall on their face and OKC passes them up then it's time to sell off some pieces and get more of the young guys into the rotation.
Will be an interesting next month.

Re: Official Trade Thread: New Year, New Thread, New Laughs
I hope Archie develops his outside shot more bc his skill set is redundant on this team with Bledsoe, Thomas, and Goran all having the ball in their hands.
You need a good mix of slashers scorers and shooters on offense from the guard and small forward position.
If we don't resign Green which we probably shouldn't, that leaves us with 1 less true shooter stop and pop. I hope they develop Reggie Bullock to be Gerald's replacement bc we could use it.
Archie has a lot of talent to be in the rotation getting backup 2 guard minutes next year, but my only question is what happens at the 3 spot when you have PJ, TJ and Reggie?
We know Reggie is a role player always will be, he'll be a backup SF, but then what do you do with PJ if you want Warren to start eventually at SF?
My only concern on offense from the 1's/3's is we have a lot of slashers and scorers but not enough stand still spot up shooters.
Luckily we have the depth where we can unload these guys and get an impact big man to compliment Markieff len and wright

I think if anything this just fuels Goodwin to get better. I hope we don't trade em, and start utilizing him. He could easily start on the Sixers and average double figures on a consistent basis. Play Goodwin!

The last interview I heard from Babby was when they got Wright.
He implies that the Suns still have their eyes set on the future and not short term.
They won't make trades that sacrifices their long term plan for short term gain... The link is in this thread somewhere.
