They're a half a game away from being the best team in the league and last night they knocked off the Bulls to win they're 12th in a row.
I know when Bud left I wasn't convinced that Atlanta was the best situation for him. They looked like nothing more than a treadmill team with some decent depth, but he's turned them into one the best teams in the league and the clear cut favorites to win the east. Baring a bad losing streak or a massive collapse it looks like Bud's the favorite for COY.
Did any of you see him having this kind of success in Atlanta?

No.
I have to say.. Right now it's fine and dandy with Pop still here coaching the Spurs. But when Pop retires and we replace him with anyone not named Budenholzer, it's gonna suck. Bud is the guy that could possibly coach this team for the next... 40 years. I know Ettore is a legendary coach in Europe and all, but for whatever reason, I don't see Ettore Messina as a next Spurs coach. He's more of someone that the team will pick his brains on much like Pop picks the brains of Larry Brown and Jerry Sloan. Difference is Ettore agreed to become assistant coach in the NBA while guys like Larry and Jerry does not. And I'm sure as hell Jim Boylan or Ime Udoka isn't who I want to become our next Spurs coach.
In some ways, seeing Bud's success right now kinda makes me wish Pop did retire after last summer... That way we have the coach to build our future with. Bud would've chose to stay as our head coach than leave. Seeing how these Spurs teams are... A great coach is just as important as having a great superstar. And we'd be pretty good with Kawhi and Bud leading this team for the next decade.

I don't think we'll be in that bad of shape. Messina has looked fairly competent so far and if he sticks around I wouldn't be too worried our future post Pops.

Re: Coach Bud and the Hawks
I thought he was going to be the best coach to come out from under Pop's umbrella. That said, the Hawks team he inherited looked like it had a bunch of pieces that did not belong together. I was not expecting the Hawks team he inherited to be successful. Especially because their best player at the time, I thought, was Horford. Horford is really injury prone, so I thought that was a bad sign.
The roster he inherited had Teague, Korver, Scott, and Horford. Josh Smith, Louis Williams, Devin Harris, and Zaza Pachulia were playing minutes in 2012-13. He took the team over and got behind Paul Milsap, which at the team I thought was a strange move. Then he did things like pick up Demarre Carroll from Utah and Pero Antic. The only move I wonder about is the Denjis Schroeder pick, but it's still really early.
Short answer, I never would have expected this season when Cosch Bud took over. Very happy for him!

Has anyone considered Pop's successor is gonna be Becky? I think Pop is going to stay with Kawhi as long as possible. The only reason Pop stayed coaching, besides that horrible loss, is Kawhi and Tony. I think Pop leaves with Parker.

It's possible. But right now i'd guess that Messina and Idoka are above her on the list.
I think the only thing that's going to stop Pops is his health. I know he's said that he wants to go out with Timmy but I just don't see it happening anymore.

Do you really think so? I don't see that.

2 or 3 ya I could see that, but 5? That's pushing it.

Re: Coach Bud and the Hawks
I'm happy for Budz and I'm hoping the rest of the league is really starting to see the Spurs way of sharing the basketball, playing as a team and moving the ball is much better than the 1-2 man hero ball most NBA teams have adopted over the years.
I'm pretty sure when Pop retires he will have a say in who his successor is so I'm not worried about who that will be in the least.
