Rose style of play this year

Post#1 » by atut55 » Thu Jan 22, 2015 3:50 pm

It seems there is a split among Bulls fans as to how Rose should be playing the game. Some want him to relentlessly attack like he did in his MVP year, while others want him to be more of a distributor. Obviously going into the playoffs and next year we all want Rose to have a more well rounded game, but I do not know if that will happen during the regular season. I understand all sides of the issue and think we all agree that we need Rose at the top of his game come playoff time.

He's on the court and playing relatively well. To me this season was always a wash considering two rookies, a new starting lineup, and Rose re-acclimating himself. There will be ups and downs to Rose's game this year (as we have seen) but as long as he appears more or less healthy, I'm perfectly content.

As I already posted in another thread, Rose is driving alright this year.

I have no complaints about his game thus far. It seems that many other posters do so I was interested to see their preference

Offensively, I think he should always try to attack the basket with the primary intention to collapse the defense and then (secondarily) score. When the defense collapse, he should look to pass to the open person. If he's not attracting help, take advantage of that 1-on-1 situation and look to score (which he should be able to do all day). This gets everyone involved and plays into the intensity / energy issue the team has been having lately. I know a lot of his 3's have been going in lately, but I don't think he should jack those up especially when it's still so early in the clock shot.

Rose style of play this year

Post#6 » by Risk Addict » Thu Jan 22, 2015 4:36 pm

The biggest issues to me are lack of movement off the ball on offense and ill advised 3 point shooting. When rose initiates the offense with a pass he just stands there after the pass. No cuts no picks. His outside shot has been so awful that the defense can sag off him on the guy who just got the pass clogging passing lanes and driving lanes. In makes it look like no one can do anything on offense but rose but in reality they cannot do anything because of rose being so stagnant

I'm just happy that he's playing. So long as he stays healthy, he will figure things out.

He needs to play the way he's always known how to play and trust his instincts. It seems he has actively been trying to go against those instincts most of the season, minus a few games here and there.

His assist numbers are down because he doesn't play near the rim as much as he used to. He used to rack up a lot of his assists when he drove to the basket and dumped it off to a guy right underneath the basket for an easy finish, or a guy on the perimeter who was left unguarded because he brought the defense over to him.

His decision making process these days seems off, like he doesn't know or understand what he wants to do anymore. I also don't like the fact that he quit dunking. What made him great before was that he was the most athletic PG in NBA history before he tore his ACL. I have seen a noticeable decline in his explosiveness and quickness this year, I just can't tell if it's because of the injuries or it's just Derrick not trying as hard as he used to.

he needs to dramatically react to contact at the rim.

I remember when people wanted Rose to change his style.

The more he gets into the paint, the better. Still would like to see him limit the 3 pt shot (about 3 a game), but it is what it is.

I think he needs to attack, but not with scoring on his mind. He needs to attack strictly with the mindset to break the defense down and make the right play whether it be scoring the basketball or finding the open man. Less thinking, more reacting.

Rose and whatever is big is coming out to defend the pick and roll needs to improve most of all. He and Gasol have been getting torched by basic pick and roll. Prime example was the hawks game last saturday in the second half. Besides that Rose has been playing pretty well, I think. It takes a lot to live up to that MVP year.

Rose needs to play the same basketball he has always played. Of course, like any player, he needs to continue to add to his game, particularly working on defense and managing the offense. However, you do that gradually through a career. you don;t just suddenly change your mindset.

I have no problem with Rose using this year to get his legs back fully. If that means popping 18 shots a night, then so be it. Now, in terms of how his shots should come, I'd actually go back to his first two seasons where he was about as dangerous a mid-range shooter as one could be. I mean, that thing was automatic.

So while I would like to see him attack the front of the rim a lot more, I would have no problem seeing him pull up from 15 instead, if the shot is there. Simultaneously, I don't want to see him abandon the three. It's a tool, and an important one at that.

Think of Paul Pierce's game. Lots of creation in the mid-range area, selective but effective three-point shooting, and then add in the Derrick Rose spice of being able to get into the lane, and he would max out his offensive contribution. This "three or drive" moneyball philosophy might work for some, but not Rose. Yeah, I know his TS% went up during the MVP year, but being a threat from mid-range (while having to respect his long-ball) is by no means easy to guard, especially as he still has his speed.

Maybe I'm being optimistic, IDK.

All about balance imo. I want him to continue to mix it up and develop as many tools to his game as possible. Bring back the mid-range when it's there, mix it in with the floater, the 3, and attacking to the rim. He can do all those things very well and make it really hard on the defense. This will open up the floor for his teammates and he has to find them.

Overall I like the way he's playing for the most part. More controlled. Would like to see some stronger finishing at the rim when that's what it takes, but is finishing hasn't been bad, it's been real good actually just no power dunks in people's grills.

Dude is driving to the basket and avoiding contact with floaters and such, that means a lot less FTs but it's pretty understandable, I mean after two catastrophic injuries the guy has to protect his body
