Hawks Fan: Luol Deng (Does He Opt Out?)

Post#1 » by fuzzy1 » Thu Jan 22, 2015 7:52 pm

Hey guys! Hawks fan, I come in peace. Just curious if you think Deng will opt out of his contract this offseason and peruse other options?

I would have to say that's pretty much a sure thing. If he wants to stay with the Heat I could imagine us offering him a higher salary one year deal with a promise of an extension with his bird rights in 2016.

I hate giving contracts with player options, especially for non-superstars non Heat lifers.

If he gets injured/decline and plays poorly/has issues - He'll opt in.

If he'll have a good rest of the season - He'll opt out.

**** hate this ****, this **** season going nowhere.

I think we signed him with the expectation of him opting out, but if he does opt in I think 10 mill is fair value for him.

This is why I think he needs to be traded. This is looking very much like a lost season even if we do make a late season push for a backend playoff seed. We are most certain not even going to have a pick next year, so why not deal him for assets. It's not like we are going to extend him any longer then one year. He is 29 and by the time 2016 rolls around he is going to be 31 on the down side of his career. He has every right to shop himself around next year for a three year deal. Reuniting him with the Bulls might be the best bet for him. It might not net us the PG that we need but it could bring back a pick or two.

I hope he opts out. He rarely has an above average game and he's turned more into a 3 point shooter than a rim attacker.

Deng is one of the good guys. I hope he gets into a good situation for himself after this season. If that means staying here or going to a contender next year, I won't be mad either way.

I'm fine if he opts out or opts in. He's done nothing good or bad here. I wish we had spent the money on a point guard. Imagine if we had signed Lowry instead of deng and mcroberts....oh well.

Unlikely Lowry comes here without LeBron and especially given the fact that he's the "man" on his team in Toronto vs. here in Miami.

I think he likes playing for the team, but it's almost inevitable that he opts out and signs a 1 year contract in the offseason. It will unlikely be with the Heat, because he has earned a higher salary and we can't pay him more very easily.

Signing Deng is too easy. If the Hawks want to make a real statement they should sign Granger and turn him into a superstar.

Luol Deng anxious to soak in Chicago return

Ira Winderman | Sun Sentinel
January 24, 2015

MIAMI — He has faced the Chicago Bulls as a Cleveland Cavalier in Cleveland. And he has faced the Bulls as a member of the Miami Heat at AmericanAirlines Arena.

But Sunday at the United Center will be different.

"Obviously, I was there since I just turned 19. I left at 28, so I was there a long time. So there's definitely going to be emotion," the Heat forward said while looking ahead to Sunday's 1 p.m. nationally televised game against the Bulls. "I think it's more of seeing the people that really work at the United Center, more than anything. I've seen my teammates; I've seen the coaching staff.

"The guys who used to park the cars, the security guards who where there since Day 1, the lady who takes care of the family room, that's going to be the emotional part."

Perhaps not as emotional as the game's first timeout. That's when the Bulls plan to honor Deng with a video tribute.

"I think that would be a special moment," he said. "Just to be there. It's a lot of fans, especially courtside, that I've seen forever. So that would be emotional."

This is not LeBron James having his video moment at AmericanAirlines Arena on Christmas after four years with the Heat. This is one of just six players who have spent parts of 10 seasons with the Bulls, joining Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Jerry Sloan, Kirk Hinrich and Tom Boerwinkle. This is the player who ranks fourth on the Bulls all-time scoring list behind only Jordan, Pippen and Bob Love, and fourth in minutes, behind Jordan, Pippen and Sloan....

Heat's Luol Deng should be welcomed when he returns to Chicago

Jason Lieser | Palm Beach Post
January 24, 2015

Luol Deng never seems to get the widespread fame and acclaim he deserves. Despite putting in a decade as an elite defender and one of the most versatile weapons in the NBA, he rarely sneaks into an All-Star Game and easily blends into the background on any roster.

But this is a place where his name stands out. When the Heat visit the Bulls on Sunday (1 p.m., ABC), it will be Deng’s first appearance as an opponent at the United Center, and he is sure to get a roaring welcome. He started there as a 19-year-old rookie and was instrumental in their rise from the misery that followed Michael Jordan’s departure.

“It meant a lot,” Deng said of his run in Chicago, which ended with a mid-season trade a year ago. “I never thought I would be there for 10 years. You’re just locked in and every year is ‘How can we get better?’ Eventually we turned it around. Those great seasons, I’ll always remember them.”

He wanted to stay longer, though there was little chance after the Bulls gave him three days to decide on a contract extension before dealing him to Cleveland.

Chicago coach Tom Thibodeau wanted him back this season, but Deng was unwilling to consider it after the bad breakup and opted to move on with Miami (19-24)...
