hmmmm... do the blazers have the right to match a Mathews offer ? Seems like we have a pretty good angle to pursue him.
What ? Me Worry ?

They don't have the right to match but they do have Bird rights.
I love his fit + Horny connection but he just doesn't make sense for the team. We won't be competing next year and his contract will lock him away into his 30s. We can't afford to have both him and Goran on the same team. Limits long term flexibility.

Both Matthews and Dragic make near equal salary. I wonder if Portland would do a Dragic for Matthews deal.

Re: Official Trade Thread: New Year, New Thread, New Laughs
Teams are prepared to pay luxury tax this offseason.
So keep in mind that we may position ourselves to do that now. It is a valid strategy to get expiring players and to pay them larger and longer deals. In excess of the current salary cap for next year's season. The cap will be raised the following season and it would be a one year hit to get the best advantageous position for the new cap raises.
Our peeps are aware of this. And as of late they have been discussing paying Dragic and keeping Bledsoe long-term.
The discussion is around acquiring someone we can pay a big contract to and take the hit next year. To come out on top for a couple of years after that. Don't be surprised if we swing for the fences.

We wouldn't pay both, we choose him over Goran.

If Dragic was offered a $18M+/yr deal somewhere else, would you match that offer for Dragic or sign Matthews for $12M/yr?
I'm getting wet at the thought of a Bledsoe-Matthews backcourt.....best defensive backcourt in franchise history and it won't even be close. Good enough offense too if Bledsoe can improve on running an offense by himself.
What would you do though? Match that offer for Goran or sign Wes for $12M/yr?
I would take Matthews @ $12M over Dragic @ $18M all day long.
Honestly, i would take Matthews @ $12M over Dragic @ $15M.
Matthews also has a special relationship with Coach. http://www.oregonlive.com/blazers/index ... ews_7.html
I know i said it before, but a Bledsoe/Matthews/Tucker/??????/Len line-up would be AMAZEBALLS!
Yea I love Goran but Matthews is the one guy I would choose over him if the price is right. An extremely hard worker who takes pride in defense and doing the little things.
Resign Matthews, trade somehow for Taj Gibson (trade Marcus + Ennis?), let Green walk but keep IT (because now we need his offense and we have enough stellar defensive guys to make up for his lack of D).
Bledsoe/IT
Matthews/Goodwin
Tucker/Bullock/Warren
Gibson/Kieff
Len/Wright
Sure we get worse some offensively but God damn, our defense would be freaking amazing!!

Appreciate the info as always
I wonder what it would take to get Paul George here.
A package of IT, Archie, Warren, and Marcus Morris (for salary matching) plus a 1st round pick?
I don't think they part with their star of the franchise but you're not going to get a star player from a playoff team trying to win a title.
Tobias Harris is another interesting guy to try to sign outright in free agency as well from Orlando

Re: Official Trade Thread: New Year, New Thread, New Laughs
What if we do this...
Suns get-
Kevin Love
Cavs get-
Goran Dragic,, Markieff Morris, Marcus Morris
We move Gerald Green to the starting lineup for the rest of the season. Over the offseason we go after Wes Mathews. We'd have four solid defenders and Love starting. Here's a video showing you can have one bad defender and STILL be a top 5 defensive team.

And I know Kevin Love's numbers are down this year, but he isn't getting the same touches he was getting with the Wolves. His numbers would definitely improve coming to our offense, and it opens up the paint for Len next year which I'm hopeful he's gonna start getting some post ups.

If I am understanding this correctly the Suns go after a player this year in order to get their bird rights which enables them to pay more than any other team. Or get a player that will be a restricted free agent so they can match any offer.

Smells like Melo maybe. That's as far over the fence as you can realistically go.

Melo and Bosh have crazy big contracts.
Both are impact players but that would hamstring us terribly.

Yeah, I agree just he Traxx said if we did it would be a swing for the fences. Maybe Utah is having buyers remorse with Favors? Or Love after he opts in for next year?? Big Al?? Dont know, what would be a doable swing for the fences move??

Re: Official Trade Thread: New Year, New Thread, New Laughs
I'd do it for Bosh not sure about Melo.
Yes Bosh is overpaid but people overlook the things he would bring to our team. He's a great leader, an amazing teammate, probably the most unselfish superstar of this decade, doesn't care if he's the #1 option or #5 option, he won't ever complain and gives every game his all.
He'd be a great fit in PHX with his play too.
I can't think of a single reason why Pat Riley would want to piss off the Heat fanbase by trading away Bosh who showed loyalty by staying with them instead of signing with a contender in Houston. Bosh & Wade will both retire in Miami.

I just don't like it. I don't see the point in giving up that much for Melo.
I don't know the solution. Mathews is interesting, and I wonder if we could start him at the three. Maybe an IT, Plumlee and pick? Or some combination where we keep our main parts, and use picks that we really won't have much room for next year.

While you guys are proposing and discussing fantasy trades, I give you the latest one from the Rocket Fanboys:

None of the 4s you listed have Anderson's shooting ability. He brings a completely different skillset than TJones, DMo, Smith or Howard.
Plus, this gives you the flexibility to include DMo in a trade for Dragic. Not saying we would, but you have to admit that DMo + NOP 1st would be very difficult for PHX to turn down (playoffs or no playoffs).
Also, I think there's a 3 way trade that could work for HOU, NOP, and PHX...
PHX In: Gordon, NOP 1st, NYK 2nd
PHX Out: Dragic, Dragic, Plumlee
NOP In: Terry, Papa, Shved, TJones, Plumlee, Canaan, DEN 2nd
NOP Out: Anderson, Gordon
HOU In: Dragic, Dragic, Anderson
HOU Out: Terry, Papa, Shved, TJones, Canaan, NOP 1st, NYK 2nd, DEN 2nd
Dragic / Beverley
Harden / Brewer
Ariza / Brewer
Anderson / DMo
Howard / DMo / Smith
In return for 2-3 months of Dragic, PHX gets the SG they wanted 3 years ago (Gordon) and the NOP 1st. They also get the NYK 2nd in return for Plumlee (which is the best offer they will get for him). Gordon is healthy (for now) so the drop up from Dragic to him shouldn't be significant. Even if he does get hurt, he's a large expiring next season that PHX can use with their picks to get the star they've been searching for.
NOP gets to clear out Gordon's salary. It will cost them Anderson, but they get an infusion of youth from TJones, Canaan, Papa, and Plumlee. It is NOT an issue that they are bringing in so many players because they have several guys on one year minimum contracts that they can easily cut.
Houston goes into "all in" mode, but was still able to keep DMo and Capela."
Their rationale for ripping off the Suns and the Pels is almost as funny as thinking the Suns would trade both Dragics and Plumlee for Eric Gordon and two lousy draft picks.
