The fact that he's in impeccable shape means he will "feel" fine, but that's not necessarily the truth as far as his foot is concerned.

He had surgery. It's invasive and takes time to heal, so that it doesn't become a recurring problem.

What feels fine right now for him might not necessarily be the case 5 years from now when his body is older and wasn't properly healed to begin with.

No reason to risk it. FO is taking the right approach.
