Isaiah Prince commits to Alabama: Maryland loses out on top in-state prospect

Maryland has lost out on their biggest remaining target in the 2015 class, as four-star local offensive tackle Isaiah Prince committed to Alabama, Ryan Bartow is reporting. The Eleanor Roosevelt (Md.) prospect is considered the best player in the state of Maryland, and would have made it three out of four years that the Terps landed the top in-state player (Stefon Diggs, Damian Prince). The prospect has reportedly canceled visits to both Ohio State and Maryland.

Prince is rated a four-star prospect by the 247Sports composite, ranking as the No. 105 prospect in the class and the seventh-best offensive tackle in the country. He chose the Tide over offers from Ohio State, Alabama, Florida and Penn State, among others.

Prince would have given the Terrapins three blue-chip commitments in the class, joining defensive tackle Adam McLean and interior offensive lineman Quarvez Boulware (whose commitment status is up in the air, to say the least). His commitment would have also given Maryland four blue-chip offensive linemen over the past two classes, all of which would be freshmen this season. Three is still nothing to scoff at, but Prince would have particularly helped on the outside at tackle.

No surprise that he didn't choose Maryland.

I won't be surprised if Damian Prince or others transfer from Maryland. D Prince was a 5-star recruit who ended up redshirting--unless he played late in the season.

Prince isn't transferring from Maryland. He loves it there.

The reason he was redshirted is because he was out of shape and was also moved to a new position.

DJ Turner commits to Maryland: Terps add talented, connected '16 DeMatha athlete

Maryland has added a third local piece to their 2016 class, as DeMatha (Md.) wide receiver Darryl "DJ" Turner committed to the Terps Saturday, the prospect announced on Twitter. Turner joins DeMatha running back Lorenzo Harrison and Good Counsel (Md.) linebacker Keandre Jones in the class.

Listed at 5'10 and 175 pounds, Turner is not yet rated by the 247Sports Composite. He is likely to play wide receiver or defensive back at the next level. Maryland offered him a scholarship in mid-January, joining Army and Old Dominion (Western Michigan later offered). He participated in camps at Penn State and Ohio State this past summer.

Turner is a part of a loaded DeMatha rising senior class that includes four-star wide receiver Tino Ellis, four-star offensive guard Terrance Davis, four-star offensive tackle JP Urquidez and Harrison. Maryland is very much interested in all of them (as well as close friends Dwayne Haskins and Trevon Diggs), and adding another player from that group should only help the Terps' chances with the rest of them.

There should have been some preconditioning suggested around the time the Terps were doing spring football and Prince was a HS senior.

1. I want to know WHO said he was out of shape.
2. Recruits don't usually come to a program that wants to change them. New position?

Bottom line: The kid is happy? I'm glad to hear it.

Yeah, unfortunately the kid was like 30-40lbs overweight...and after watching him in practice the staff decided he would be better at guard than tackle.

He's expected to compete for starting spot this year.

DeMatha's DJ Turner Commits To Maryland

It’s been quite the 24 hour period for the Maryland football program.

After securing a commitment from Tennessee cornerback transfer D’Andre Payne on Friday, the Terrapins received a pledge from 2016 DeMatha wide receiver DJ Turner. Turner becomes the third commitment for Maryland’s 2016 class and the third local recruit to stay close to home.

Turner is also the second pledge from DeMatha as he joins running back Lorenzo Harrison with the Terps. Good Counsel linebacker Keandre Jones is the other member of Maryland’s 2016 class, which could be loaded by the time all the chips fall over the course of the next calendar year.

Turner is rated as a three-star recruit by Rivals and is the 18th best player in the state of Maryland. The DeMatha wideout currently has offers from Army, Old Dominion, and Western Michigan. He was just offered by Maryland six days ago.

Turner is a dynamic playmaker that accounted for more than 800 receiving and kick return yards for the Stags. He also had a mind-boggling eight interceptions on the defensive side of the ball.

Maryland recruited Turner as an athlete, so it’s currently unclear what position he’ll play once he arrives in College Park. The DeMatha junior is as electrifying a player as you will see in the area. He’s somewhat like Stefon Diggs in terms of what he can do after the catch. Turner can flat-out fly and is dangerous no matter where he lines up on the field.

It may be early, but Maryland already has a top 30 recruiting class in 2016 and a top five class in the Big Ten.

Dematha football coach Elijah Brooks:

"Coach Edsall and the entire Maryland staff, they’re doing a great job creating a buzz around the program and the school," DeMatha coach Elijah Brooks said of the Terps, who have also benefited from the recent announcement of their plan to build an indoor practice facility. "The announcement of the new facilities have all these kids going crazy, and it’s an exciting time for Maryland football and the University of Maryland."

"I’m pretty sure a lot of people wanted to see how they could compete their first year in the Big Ten," Brooks said. "And I don’t know if many people gave them a fighting shot. They should have gone 8-4 this year, so I think they answered a lot of questions this season about whether they would be able to compete. So I think a lot of people feel like once they get more top guys from the area they can really take the program to new heights."

Part of the appeal for recruits, Brooks said, is the opportunity to unite and elevate their hometown school to a level occupied by teams such as Ohio State, which won the Big Ten and will be one of four teams playing in the inaugural College Football Playoff.

"Kids have left and gone to different places in the past, but many guys in the area feel that they can really make their mark at Maryland and really kind of pave their own way," Brooks said. "That intrigues a lot of them."

"I think they all want to stay home and play for their state school. When you have kids like Lorenzo, Keandre and DJ staying home, it definitely attracts other top prospects."

Lady Terps Crack the Top-5

Maryland's women's basketball team moved up one spot for the second consecutive week, going from No. 6 in the AP Poll to No. 5. The Terps beat Michigan State at home, 85-56, and Indiana, 84-74, on the road this past week.

Maryland remains undefeated in conference play in eight games and its now 17-2 overall. They travel to Ann Arbor to play Michigan (12-6, 4-3) and then close out their week at home against No. 20 Iowa (15-3, 6-1). The Terps have now won 11 consecutive games after falling at Notre Dame in early December. The Fighting Irish are ranked one spot ahead of Maryland at No. 4.

Iowa and No. 22 Rutgers are the only other Big Ten teams ranked in the top 25.

St. John’s point guard Anthony Cowan Jr. commits to Maryland

Maryland has added a major first piece to its 2016 recruiting class, netting a commitment from St. John’s junior point guard Anthony Cowan Jr.

Although his commitment only became official on Monday, Cowan has been leaning toward pledging to Maryland for some time. His recruitment took a turn after he visted campus for Maryland’s game against Rutgers several weeks ago, and at that time he “just felt it.”

“I was thinking about holding off to maybe broaden my recruiting to really see other schools,” Cowan said in a text message Monday, “but I just knew Maryland was the place to be.”

The pledge marks the first in the Class of 2016 for Maryland, and a boon at that. Cowan is regarded as one of the area’s most gifted players, reputed for his speed and offensive versatility. Rated a four-star by Scout and a three-star by Rivals, Cowan also has scholarship offers from Georgetown, Illinois, West Virginia, Penn State, Florida State and Xavier.

He made you feel like you could be something'

It was fitting that shortly after Maryland guard Dez Wells hit a game-winner to lift his team to a 68-67 win over Northwestern, a game that aired on BTN, that same network would debut an episode of its acclaimed series “The Journey” that spotlighted that very senior.

One of the centerpieces of Wells’ story revolved around his relationship with Washington Wizards guard John Wall, with whom Wells grew up in Raleigh, N.C. The two played high school basketball together for three years at Word of God Academy.

“I stayed at his house a lot my senior year in high school,” Wall joked. “Make sure he gets to school on time, make sure I get to school on time.”

“John has been like a big brother,” Wells said. “John was like one of the first guys that I saw in Raleigh like really make it so I just kept working and he always told me, you know, hard work pays off. He was one of those guys that you looked up to and it was just like, he made you feel like you could be something.”

As Wells helped Maryland to a win, Wall was in Denver putting up 19 points and 16 assists while committing just two turnovers in a 117-115 Wizards victory over the Nuggets.

“It’s fun and exciting seeing him develop and grow,” Wall said on BTN. “He’s looking at me and I’m telling him at the same time I’m also looking at him and seeing what he’s doing to help his team become one of those elite teams in college basketball.”

Could very well be - If he could just be more consistent in his overall game. He has physical tools and plays with a lot of energy. If everything worked out for him, he could be a Wes Matthews kind of player - but he's got to lock himself in a gym all summer working on his 3 point shooting.

Yup, Russell's a top 5 pick - an even better version of Trimble. What a great opportunity for Trimble. Neither are great defenders, so expect big numbers from both. I could see the Terps using Wells to defend Russell - since he can be physical with him and take that burden off of Trimble.

They're some diaper dandies!! As Dukie V would say

And yeah, Russell has the NBA draft hype behind him right now so let's see if Trimble is able to bring it as well on a big stage.

Great comparsion. I totally agree Dez needs to work on his 3 point shooting.
