Yeah I'm taking a few extra classes at the local community college to widen my options. Ive strongly considered going to grad school for PA rather than MD so I need to take anatomy as a req. Still mulling things over, but i'm not sure if I want to do 8 plus years of school.

If you want to do med school, do it. You cannot keep second guessing it. Sure you have to live in dire poverty for 8 years and pile up thousands in debt while not being certain of a good residency until match-day but that's what med school is.

Listen to Slava. You'll be a broke doctor with malpractice lawsuits in the next decade.

Follow your heart but I would suggest that you go for med school. It's worth it.
4 years of med school followed by residency of variable length depending on what field you want to go into.
Residency can be as short as 3 years (pediatrics, Family medicine, internal medicine) or 6 or 7 years for neurosurgery or cardiac surgery.
PA is also great but you are never independent. You'd always have to practice under the supervision of a physician.
Both great fields.
Whatever you decide, don't decide based on how much money you'd make. Go for what you really want to do in your life, give it your all, and don't look back.

Thanks for the advice guys. its a tough decision. One of my biggest worries is that when i'm older i won't have time to spend with my family or travel which is one of those things that I really want to do.

If you take more time before jumping in you'll end up being in debt for longer in your life. I'm not trying to rush you into it but you kind of need to make decision instead of kicking the ball down the street if it is med school that you choose to do.

Once you get established, you'll have time to travel. Our doctors are always off somewhere and my dad's friends were always traveling it seemed.
Plus you can volunteer you time in foriegn countries (Dr's without Borders?) to see the world and you can write it all off.

The best life for a Dr I've seen are the ones that specialize... Get focused on something like Radiology or sports/orthopedic medicine and you'll get paid better and have more time for your family.

I used to work in worker's comp for years, and I knew this one doctor man, he was in his early 40s at most, and had a sweet house in Moscow, one of those neat looking Russian castle looking like houses (man I sound stupid right), he had a villa in spain and a few beach houses in underdeveloped countries for when he wanted to run away from it all if you will.

I wanted to be an attorney at the time but never wanted to be one of those people stuck to their jobs like my poor old man, his advice was the same as kilroy just mentioned, SPECIALIZE. He said that allows one the ability to make excellent money, have control over your schedule and there's always volunteering, he said he had plenty time to travel and a few times just randomly picked up and decided he wanted to go on a vacation.

I also know a doctor who does drs without borders and it seems he's always in some new country when my dad tells me about him. In any case, best of luck Earl, I just hope you choose the field you want to wake up to everyday for the rest of your life.
