Kobe Question

Post#1 » by fortuneteller » Wed Jan 28, 2015 7:25 pm

Hey folks, long time Laker fan here starting up on this forum. I am curious, are we allowed to amnesty Kobe next year? My guess is that we can't because we already used amnesty on MWP.
What are our options with Kobe's contract? I think if he retires we can spread his pay out over 3 years for purposes of the cap.

we cannot amnesty him for sure because of MWP, but i also think his contract was signed after that bargaining deal was in place anyhow.

I'd say stretch provisioning is not wise as 1 more year of the contract won't kill us, but it's still a chunk over 3 years

No reason to stretch his contract off, since that would just mess with our cap flexibility for three years. The sooner it's fully off the books the better in order to make a rebuild or attract top tier free agents.

Let's lay off the backseat modding, gents.

Welcome aboard, fortune!

And as for your question, DD had it. The Lakers amnesty is gone, and wouldn't have applied to Kobe's current extension.

Haha, fine - legit reply.

1) Already used amnesty.

2) Kobe's salary will not be stretched.

Thanks for your greeting and thoughts,
I agree that it is better to get the contract over with and not use the stretch. One buddy of mine said that Kobe will take a financial hit for the team in order to sign a big name player. I doubt that is even allowed by the rules though. Looks like we are in for another tough year, because Kobe's contract will discourage guys from signing with the Lakers. I am a huge Kobe fan, so it hurts me to say this.
