Is KD really worth 40 million per year?

Spoiler:
Yes. Yes, he is.

I've seen some discounting this difference, like Kurt Helin at Pro Basketball Talk , saying that KD's Nike contract makes his NBA salary irrelevant .................. but I kinda think 40 million is 40 million .

And all other things being relatively equal , i.e. chances of winning a champ , comfort with organization, etc ........... then 40 mill becomes even larger.

take it from a cleveland fan; those extra years mean squat. If you want to keep your superstar (and I am totally rooting for you). You need to be the best basketball option for him. Like LeBron, I can guarantee that he will want to be in the best position to win chips.

Yeah more money or not, I can't really see him staying unless OKC can win a title.

The continuity he has with with Russ and Serge , will be hard for any other team to match. They can't buy it and they can't instantly create it.

That's definitely true, but if he hasn't been able to win a title in 9 seasons with OKC (assuming it doesn't happen this year or next), and most of those being with Ibaka & Westbrook, what's going to convince him that things will be any different in the future? Maybe being given the reins to pick a new coach and having a Lebron-like influence on the roster? I'm not really sure I could see that happening though.

But they've been competing for champs , been to three WCF's in four years. That's all anyone can ask.

Winning a champ has more to do with staying healthy, than anything else. Takes a whole lotta good fortune, KD smart enough to see that.

And bottom line, it won't be about the past, near as much as its about the future.

the question is: does he deserve it? 40mil is alot, unless he can guarantee me a wcf spot i wouldn't spend that much on him. Right now, he can't carry the guys to the playoffs.

Lost in the talk of KD leaving, we only have 40 million in guaranteed contracts (plus Roberson and Adams) for '16-'17. The cap is projected at 88 million and KD's cap hold is 30ish million. We'll have 17 million dollars to offer to someone. That won't get us the same caliber of player it would have, but Al Horford and Nic Batum would both probably be options.

Free agency is something Durant will definitely want to experience, but I doubt he end up leaving unless there is some really special place for him to go.

My only real concern is if LeBron invites him to team up, really.
