Adreian Payne traded to Minnesota for 2017 First Round pick

Post#1 » by Hawkeyes » Tue Feb 10, 2015 7:32 pm

Brian Windhorst ✔ @WindhorstESPN
The Hawks are sending rookie Adreian Payne to the Timberwolves for a 2017 lottery-protected first round pick.

Ahhh....was hoping it wouldn't be lottery-protected lol. Best of luck to Payne.

Oh well, remind me not to get hopeful of draft pics.

I figures it would be Mack or Jenkins instead of Payne to clear a roster spot, but we are hurting at the 2-3 position so that probably saved those guys.

When I saw the headline I was thinking we were getting Budinger in the deal...but nope.

I also guess this means they have confidence in the resigning of Milsap. Payne seemed like a Milsap/Scott insurance policy.

This can only mean 5 things:

1- They were not high on Payne and his development
2- Signing of someone else is imminent. (DUH)
3- Thabo injury is much worse than suspected?
4- They must have no worries about resigning Millsap
5- We are even more thin at frontcourt now.

Weird how we now suddenly got even less front court now, we just traded another 6'10'' player LOL

I was really hoping that this pick would turn into a unprotected first round pick by 2021 if it hadn't been conveyed yet. But it looks like it just becomes a couple 2nd round picks. Not very pleased with this trade, I thought paynes value would have been a little higher than this. A couple things really stand out to me from this trade..

1. i think bud realizes we need help on the wings with Thabo being injured and this trade cleared up a roster spot. I expect us to make a run at Ray Allen in the next couple of days and if we strike out then sign some other wing.

2. Payne didn't fit in this system. Maybe bud saw enough of him to realize he doesn't have the BBIQ to play for the Hawks? But then why draft him? Maybe Bud and Ferry were split on this decision on draft day? Maybe it was just a Millsap insurance policy that we don't need anymore?

You guys have 1st round picks from Brookyn and Minnesota in the coming years. That's crazy impressive- you can build a very impressive roster with those assets.

*You're also much better off leaving Gary Neal alone unless Budenholzer is ready to bench him anytime he plays badly. Neal can be alright sometimes, but he's much more likely to chuck away and not play defense and turn the ball over and... you get it.

The only thing I can really bank on this is that we either still cant draft (throwing away a 1st round pick) or there is someone we are signing that will make sense in the coming days.....

I dont think we need Ray Allen personally. just my opinion

Anxious to see Jamaals take on this

Interesting timing. I wonder if we saved on his air fare for the flight back...

Will be interested to see the protections. So far, all I can find is that it's "lottery protected" from '17-'20. It doesn't say how it achieves that and if the protection is descending or flat nor if the pick becomes unprotected or 2 2nds. My guess is 14/14/14/14 -> 2nds but we'll see.

I'm really torn on what to think on this deal. I know I was in a debate with many here with the position that Coach Bud had soured on Payne early and I think there is some of that in this deal. The 1st is nice and we did need the roster spot, but we got Payne with a 1st and we're not playing Jenkins anyway. I still think it was too early to cut bait on Payne, but a 1st would also go a long way in convincing me to reconsider that stance - and obviously Coach Bud as well.

One of the things that I've been very impressed with is Coach Bud's rotations and willingness to play the hot hand (and conversely, his willingness to bench the cold one.)

I don't see what Neal brings, but then again, I don't get our pursuit of Ray Allen either. Would think we'd prefer a defensive wing who can play SF and rebound and neither bring that. Maybe we'll see more than one move though.

When does Walter's season end in Liga? I would assume it would end before the NBA season. Any chance they bring him over? I know it's probably unlikely since it would waste a year of his cheap contract on a short year.

Tavares? I cant see him coming over , why not just play Muscala? Surely Muscala is more developed I would think.

I suspect we are getting someone else.

In this vein, Lamar Patterson is a name to put on the table. We need a wing, Patterson was the last cut in TC, and while I wouldn't say he's been "vocal" about coming back, he has made it known that his dream is to play in the NBA and he really likes the players on our team.

I think we'll end up using the pick between 2017-20, and that it'll be the number 14/15 selection. Wiggins, Rubio, Dieng, LaVine with the addition of a couple more lotto picks over the next few years will help them fight it and get the 7-8 seed one of those years imo. If not, then we can only hope that it becomes unprotected in 2021, and we pull a Pistons on Vancouver and cash out with a top 5 pick at their expense.

The protection is 14/14/14/14 -> 2 2nds. Further, MIN doesn't convey it's top 12 protected pick this year (to BOS?) then the protection clock might not start until '18. I know it does if MIN conveys that 1st in '16, but I don't know what happens if that pick devolves into 2 2nds.

Guys Tavaras is gonna suck. If a guy who lead his team to a final four (with mono) can't cut it here how can u possibly believe awkward edy can???

I predict we'll flip the Minnesota pick before the deadline for a serviceable big

I'm going to assume that you haven't watched much tape of Tavares. He's agile for his size and he has elite length.

Good college play does not equal good NBA play. From Bud's statements about the trade, it seems like they value Muscala and Tavares more than Payne. They moved Payne to open up opportunities for these two while regaining the pick that they used on Payne.
