Suns looking to balance roster

Post#1 » by vvgotgame19 » Thu Feb 12, 2015 5:49 pm

Per wiretap:

The Phoenix Suns have a glut of guards in the backcourt and Ryan McDonough admitted the team's balance is slightly off.

"I think our roster balance is a little off, and that's my fault," McDonough said Wedneday on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM. "We are a little too backcourt heavy, especially in terms of guys who, you know, I think you'd define primarily as scorers in the backcourt.

"So I think at some point we'll need to balance that out, try to get a little more size, a little more frontcourt scoring and rebounding."

The Suns are in the playoff picture but have lost seven of their last 10 games.

"At the same time it's a challenge because we do have talented players, they've all had success individually and team success in the NBA," McDonough said, "so those are some of the decisions we'll kind of mull over the next week or so and we'll see where we are on the 19th next week."

I know we've been playing better these past few games and everybody has stepped back from the ledge for now, but let's not forget how abysmal we had been playing. They have a backcourt imbalance, we have a frontcourt imbalance. Not necessarily advocating anything yet, but there is something to think about here. I'd love to get Dragic somehow...

0 chance. Dragic is getting paid next year and Bulls aren't paying 2 guys or giving up assets for a guy who will walk.

Dragic for Gibson is one of the few discussed deals where I can see it helping the Bulls in the long term . . . if the Bulls can keep Dragic . . . which they can't.

Dragic will get pretty good offers this summer; Bulls have to be prepared to pay both Jimmy & Goran to make this worthwhile.

I don't think they will, even though Dragic is a damn nice combo guard.

He finishes over 70% at the rim :o

A 1st rounder is nothing to pay for a guy like Dragic. He is damn good.

But paying him in the offseason is tricky.

Gibson + 1st rounder.
Trade Noah to Utah for Kanter (I'm hoping they can absorb salary here, don't know)

2015 Roster
Rose, Dragic
Dragic, Butler
Butler, McDermott, Snell
Mirotic, 1st Rounder
Gasol, Kanter

Mirotic + Kanter is frontcourt of the future. Backcourt is stacked.

I don't see why resigning Dragic would be an issue. I think his value is around 44/4 which isn't much more than Gibson makes. Even 50/4 would be a reasonable deal that the Bulls could accommodate.

I'd be really interested to see Dragic on this team. Could see him playing Kirk's role really well (starting, of course).

It's risky to give up assets for a half a season Rental. Dragic is a good player, but does he make a huge difference like the Sheed trade did for the 04 Pistons? I don't think they do it unless they are going to make an earnest attempt to re-sign him.

Also the first rounder would have to be the Bulls own pick and not the SAC pick.

I would do Taj and pick (CHI) for Dragic. They are heavly backcourt team we are heavly frontcourt team. But I would do it only if Dragic gives some guarantee he would sign with Bulls long-term and he would take less (at least first year! to give us some salary cap room after it goes up later) to stay on championship team. Same goes for Butler.

And I would agree with Noah for Kanter, but Noah wont get traded no matter what.

If the Bulls had a realistic shot of signing Dragic this offseason, trying to trade for him would make sense. But I wonder if Dragic wants to be part of another backcourt where he would have to really share the playmaking and ballhandling duties...like he does with Bledsoe. He might prefer to go somewhere where he could be the main PG and the other guy is a more of a pure SG.

I was going to suggest this. You do this trade and you take the rest of the year to evaluate who helps the team more - Rose or Dragic.

Why couldn't they keep both?

Hmm Suns want a BIG. No way that's possible. I said a week ago that I heard a few weeks back they were asking about Taj.

You are confusing me, Ralph. Suns asking about taj recently, salaries match, we need a playmaking combo guard or wing. But then you say no way that's possible. The only two downsides to a trade like this is dragic not resigning and butler moving to the three more which negates some of his great advantage at the two. Not to mention, we are then on injury away from being in trouble in front court. However, IMHO, you add the talent and work it out later. I think we are limited chance to win title this year, and a trade like this may or may not help this year as we need to assimilate a new guy and hope no injuries and that mirocic fills in for taj fine. But, assuming we extend dragic, all we need to do is add a solid Darrel Arthur type in offseason for depth. That's easy. So if we know dragic will resign, this trade is a no brainer. Taj and our first for dragic. Done and done.
We have Martell Webster. He's called Kyle Korver here, and we shall love him and squeeze him and call him Ashton. -BrooklynBulls

You trade Taj and get in Dragic.

You've pretty much said " Eff U Derrick".

That is dangerous territory.

Yeah, they can as well as cancel this season if they get Dragic. Phoenix wants to trade him because they have too many guys needing the ball in the backcourt and are struggling because of that. This basically transfers their problem to the Bulls with three guys needing the ball and not to mention Gasol.

It is fun to have fantasy trades. There is a balance between hedging against Derrick's injury and having a more competent backup than Kirk/Brooks.

My uneducated guess is the front office values Taj way more than we do. And Dragic can't play the 3, so the fit isn't exactly perfect. Very good fit, but not perfect.
