It's a very Toronto thing to overrate our young players get attached to them and wait for them to "get it" to
the point it's detrimental to the team.

Sometimes it's to late like the Jays waiting to the very end with Travis Snider and getting a ham sandwich back...

But sometimes it's salvageable while you think you're selling on a young player who you feels value is at an all time low...

The Jays traded Brett Lawrie who went from the next big thing to injury riddled headcase bust for a stud in Josh Donaldson...

The Leafs (of all teams) realized Luke Schenn was a lottery bust and were able to get JVR for him arguably the
best trade they've made this century.

The Raptors were able to get a 1st round pick for Bargnani after 7 disappointing season and his career spiraling
into obscurity.

Trading Ross while he's 24 and still has "upside" labeled with him will probably get you more than a 27 year old Ross...

Does Ross have the intangibles of a guy you want to extend and keep in your program?

- Soft both mentally and physically
- choker
- Poor work ethic first guy to leave practice
- Has barely showed any signs of progress since entering the league
- Poor basketball IQ
- Poor body language
- Is more interested in the NBA lifestyle than the game itself
- Not a guy you want to go to war with as last years playoffs proved

This is what bothers me about Ross. And it may be Ross, and it may be Casey's playcalling, but it's much more apparent with Ross than it is with other players when Ross sits.

I've been to about 10 games this year and been able to watch the team off the ball, instead of just seeing what the guys in the truck decide to focus on.

On offense, Ross jogs to the corner, and stands there for 20+ seconds while the Raptors run an offensive set, generally doesn't even really make a move for a rebound when a shot goes up, and then jogs back to set up on D.

There's no movement when he's on offense. Yes, I get the whole thing about spacing, etc., but at least try to move around a little bit to ensure there's always an open passing lane between you and the ball handler. Use a screen or two. Someone should sit Ross down and show him some footage of Reggie Miller -- another 6'7" scrawny little shooting guard with a sweet jumper. Reggie moved off the ball and used screens as well as any player ever has. Ross could learn a thing or two.

And yes, I acknowledge that part of the blame lies in Casey + staff's offensive sets, but in comparison, none of the other wing players are that static on offense when they're on the floor.

So at least part of the blame for Ross not getting touches lies w/ Ross.

He runs ahead maybe due to his ball handling, and mostly due to Casey wants some of them to setup and space the ball (most teams do that to allow the PG more room near the half court line).

As for offense, most likely by design that he is asked to just stay in the corner. He used to make cuts, and sometimes you saw him makes cut, but our hero mentality (including Jonas) does not help in passing to cutters. Neither Ross is a finisher, so there is no point for him to run near the rim with our limited 3 pointers.

Anyway, I don't think we can develop Ross this year, Casey has "win" over "development", while Ujiri is stacking on the SG position. I suppose next year when we upgrade our PF and SF (rather than redundant position). And it makes no difference for Ross going to another team, because SG position is stacked, and teams like to play skilled PG (can penetrate, can shoot, can pass, can defend by losing size on a weak position). Hopefully Ujiri and Casey balance the goal of "developing" players vs "winning", as we promise Lowry to "win now". Perhaps we can give Jonas and Ross time together at the year end (last 10 games, since we will clinch division) for the "real" development.

At this point, Ross is looking more MoPete then Vince Carter. I really hope he turns it around some point soon.

Mo Pete was a good player. Vince Carter is going to the HOF. Exactly how good did you expect Ross to be?

This is what happens when people have high expectations and overrate young players. Ross IS a good player. He's just not the player the Raptors are hoping he is. Ross would flourish under an offensive system. The Raptors don't have that. You can't expect Ross to play like Lou Williams and succeed, which is what Casey expects from all of his guards and wing players.

Put him on a team where the coach will actually run him off screens and run plays for him, and he'll succeed. Ask him to dribble the ball and create shots, and he'll struggle. The coaching staff should have seen this a long time ago, and they still haven't adjusted.

Maybe they just don't have a mind on that bench that can actually draw up plays for players. It would explain the freeflowing offense.

I want Masai to trade Ross but I highly doubt it happens.

He was taken out of the starting lineup, it wouldn't be smart to shop him now. If he was the starting 3 on the second best team in the East, that would work wonders for his trade value. I think they're gonna hold onto him for now even though he should be moved.

Doesn't work in any trade checkers. In fact, I can't get any trade between ross and faried to work- can anyone else make a trade that works?

I think there was a point last night where ross got blown past by andre miller and jack armstrong said something about millers excellent footspeed and i just died laughing lol. Seriously though, ive been a miller fan for a long time, getting schooled by him on the block, acceptable, getting blown past by andre miller, simply terrible, terrible defence.

I say we keep him.

The whole having a kid probably overwhelmed him. this extended break will probably have playing better. I hope.

We started out JV/Drummond's rookie seasons going something like 3-13. Our best bigs behind JV and Amir were Ed Davis and Bargs.

He would have played a lot. Casey played Bargs, did he not? Why? Because BC mandated it. If BC avoided AD because he projected our bigs to be better, or our record to be better, or clung to hope of salvaging Bargs' value, it just compounds his stupidity. These are not good reasons to pass on the superior talent.

What's the next argument, if BC took him, BC would still have his job and we'd be stuck with his treadmill decisions? Possible. We're good now, so I've no desire to rehash stuff like this, but it's hard not to reply to this kind of specious reasoning/defending of some of BC's awful GMing.

Thinking that he passed because he didn't want to give up on Bargs is worse to me than the fact he took Ross over him. And that is probably why he passed, he overrated his own scrubs. He obviously didn't think much of Davis either as he was shipped out before the break for Gay.

This is the perfect example of the canyon-like gap between what BC presented/thought of himself as and his actual level of competence. He was out of touch and in denial of it that TL, who was gonna toss him regardless, went out of his way to publicly note that BC was essentially delusional about his assessment of the team he put together.

Anywho...

Casey played Bargnani a lot when Ujiri takes over as well.
I can understand when you lacked scoring and shooting, you probably want Bargnani. What were we after Bosh left? Missed our consecutive 3 pointers? That should tell you how bad our shooting was, and why we started Ross after we traded Gay, simply we need shooting, and Bargnani can provide it.

That 2011-12 season was such a fail at tanking. We were in solid position and then go 7-9 in the final 16 games. Derozan wasn't shut down until the final game, I don't even think the Nets had their own pick and they out tanked us.

During those last 16 games the Nets, Cavs, Kings, and Warriors(who put on an epic late season tank) all passed us
*warriors tied and won the coin toss

It was shocking we weren't picking at least 6th, so depressing. Clearly our management wasn't interested in Drummond but we would have been picking between Lillard and Barnes.

Then could've traded Drummond.

It was stupid not to take him. Heck, you could've taken him and traded down to get Ross.

I do like Ross though. He's crap this year but was our best defender last year. Many nights he gave the other teams' best players fits. I think he's in a mental funk and we just need to ride it out.

No question now the Raps should have selected Drummond.

If it didn't work out, Masai would be fetching more in a trade for Drummond or Val than he'll ever get for Ross.
