There isn't a problem. If a Hawks fan came to the Wolves board and offered Payne for a lotto protected first that turned into second rounders I don't see why we would have shut it down. the agendas here are funny.

Except that it's a protected pick. If you're assuming that your team will never develop into a playoff team for the next 5 years with Rubio/Wiggins/Lavine/Shabazz/Dieng, then I suppose it's a good deal

If you think I'm going to be mad if we make the playoffs and give up a pick 15 and after in the next 5 years for this year's 15th pick you would be wrong. People were calling Shabazz a bust this time last year. If some team would have made this same deal for him with all the negative reactions, they would be laughing right now. I'll wait to see how Payne plays before I judge him so I don't make some idiotic claim like the people last year with Shabazz.

Of course you're not going to be mad and you would have every reason in the world to be happy. And that's exactly why the "it's only 2 2nds in the future" card does not work here.
Minny making the playoffs in the future won't change stupid trades that were made. The Thad trade was stupid and in my opinion, this trade was stupid too. It's pretty much the Hawks fixing a mistake in the draft after they saw what they got and Minny paying for it. They overpaid in both trades. If the Hawks had seen potential in Payne, they wouldn't have traded him in his rookie season. It's pretty much a 24 y/o rookie that still can't play in the NBA.
If Sacramento somehow makes the playoffs with Karl, I'll be very happy but that won't change the fact that Sacramento was stupid in the Casspi/Hickson trade. That's pretty much the same case here.

I really, really doubt Taylor is going to let that happen. Barring tremendous misfortune or disastrous mismanagement for another decade, that team will push to make the playoffs. Whether I was Minnesota or Atlanta (or any other team), I would count on that pick being a first rounder, though who knows what exact year.

I would agree that the likelihood of Minnesota not making the playoffs by 2020 is small. The Wolves have a group of young talent that has 2 guys (Rubio and Wiggins) that have a floor of borderline all-star with big upside. In addition, there are 6 guys that have the potential to be very good to great rotation players (Bennett, Muhammed, Dieng, LaVine, Payne, and Robinson), so even if only half of them develop that's pretty good. A final young piece will be added through a top 5 pick in the 2015 draft giving a total of 9 players 25 or under to build around. Lastly, because a huge chunk of the team will be on rookie contracts in the 2016 and 2017 off-seasons there should be a large amount of cap space to fill in the gaps with very good free agents. If the Wolves can't make the playoffs by 2020 something has gone massively wrong.

The Hawks saw what they had? How many minutes did he play for the Hawks? Considering Dieng who was an old rookie and looked like trash the first couple months of the season, should the Wolves have traded him for a lotto protected pick as well? How about Shabazz? Obviously not. Just because a team trades a young player doesn't mean much to me. The Bucks traded Harris to the Magic and he ends up being a good player. How about giving Payne more than a few more minutes of playing time before you determine that he can't be good.

If they keep the pick, the best case scenario is Atlanta traded the 2014 #15 for the 2018 #15. That's four years of lost production. Worst case, it could be a 2020 #44 and 2021 #60.
Atlanta has to flip the pick for a useful player in order to "win" anything.
