Jed York...

Post#1 » by -AC- » Tue Feb 17, 2015 1:18 am

What's the deal with the Jed York hate? Is it the fact that he has helped turn around a once great franchise that his parents damn near destroyed? Or is it that since taking over at the end of 08' the team has had only one losing season (6-10) and has averaged almost 10 wins a season since taking over? Maybe it's the brand new shiny stadium that he was able to politic for and get built? Oh, it must be a return to the Super Bowl after an almost two decade absence? It's probably just all of the armchair GMs out there are upset about the coaching change, even though the last time he made a coaching change things seemed to work out for the overall success of the team pretty damn well?

If you break down the Jed York era, there isn't a whole lot of things to b*tch and moan about if you measure the man by his overall success... But some how I know this will pi$$ off some if not most anyway...

So feel free to fire away now, but I really needed to get that off my chest... :)

I think it's the whisper campaigns and the implied lying that bugs most now. Initially, it was losing Harbaugh and the coaching hire, but what lingers is the process and acts attributed to him (leaks). Now, why everyone assumes he was the rat, that's an assumption and it's been here since Singletary, I mean, York.

Rosenburg, Florio, Kawakami, the Cohns... All the guys leading the charge when it comes to the "leaks"... I guess its all in how it's worded, and typically the aforementioned are not usually kind or necessarily fair in how they report 49ers football...

Apparently unlike many, I'm willing to give Jed the benefit of the doubt to see what his coaching staff can do this year. But he's in a bed of his own making, primarily. He handled the coaching change incredibly poorly - first looking indecisive and unprepared in finding a HC, and then taking part in both an uncomfortable press conference with Tomsula followed by a disastrous interview with KNBR. The coordinator search, particularly OC, couldn't have gone much worse either.

The end result may be okay or even very good. The appearance of it has been very bad. There were justifications for firing Harbaugh. But ironically, Jed ceded the high ground by trying to retain it. For all his talk about "winning with class," and basically trying not to dump on Harbaugh, instead he has looked like a petulant child who couldn't get his way and thus fired Harbaugh. His talk of "mutual parting," and the whole business about competing for a SB every season rang hollow. Not t mention the whole, "Hold me accountable" business was just ridiculous.

I'm not going to condemn him before we've seen the product, but as of now the team has a home field where it went .500, a pretty precarious coaching situation, and the perception around the league that the owner and GM are power-hungry meddlers. At least some of that - and frankly much of it -is due to the way Jed handled the transition to Tomsula.

I won't condemn Jed for the leaks because I have yet to see any proof he was behind them. There is alot of media speculation that he did with people saying it must have been him, but that is the extent of it. My problem with the Jed York are many. Crimson posted above much of the things he has done poorly. My problem is how the Harbaugh's replacement went down. I just don't see what is so speecial about Tomsula that York was willing to gut the defensive coaching staff. The 49ers have a window of opportunity to get something done and 49er mgmt gutted the coaching staff. I am willing to give Tomsula a chance and for Jed's sake hope it works out. If the team reverts back to the Nolan/Singletary era, Jed York will be vilified and will not be able to show his face in the Bay Area

Whenever I think of leaks, I think of the Valerie Plame case, where the Bush Administration told a few people about her being an undercover CIA agent. One reporter of the few told mentioned it and her career's over. Sure, the Bush Administration is to blame, but if I were the reporter, I'd hate to have been the one to report it, because that essentially means that I caused her to lose her job (identity). The others told didn't report it and didn't tell others. The others that didn't report weren't American enemies, so they wouldn't have used that information to hurt America or her career. So, again, Bush Administration's fault, but don't report it! It's a lot different for sports world because no one is losing their job and others would report it if they heard it, so you need to be competitive with your releases.

One of my favorites was when Paul McCartney was upset with a reporter for quoting him on an admission he felt he made confidentially in an interview. He told the reporter he took LSD (big surprise! ;)) and thought there was some sort of code of ethics to not report that he admitted to it.

Windows of opportunity to win with a talented roster is such a precious commodity and here Jed York just accelerated the deterioration of a very talented team. Even if you were to give Jed the benefit of the doubt that these moves had to be made, how to gauge where the Niners should be next year?

I think that the 49ers would be lucky to make the playoffs. The NFC West is going to be brutal.

With Tomsula being promoted to HC, who is Jed's next snitch? Maybe we should make a pool. My money is on Geep Chryst.

Yep. I wouldn't have had an issue with replacing Harbaugh, but how he was replaced I do see as a problem.

A lot of the hatred stems solely from the fact that Harbaugh is gone. He's the coach that many credit for turning the franchise around again. People don't accept change that easily.

And that's the gamble that's been made, that Tomsula is that good, or that coaching simply doesn't matter (and I don't see how someone who grew up in the Erickson/Nolan/Singletary era could possibly believe that). Right now, it's a little hard for me to believe that Tomsula, Mangini, and Chryst is better than Gase, his OC, and Fangio would have been. Particularly as you'd almost certainly still have Tomsula on the staff.

I do think there is alot of that out there. But at least on this site, I don't think that is the case. I think what happened after Harbaugh left is what concerns people. That is what concerns me and it appears the same for many others here.

We'll never know, but the standard for Tomsula is to make the playoffs and at least challenge Seattle when we play them. It's a tall order for a first-time HC lacking a great QB in football's toughest division.

It's almost an impossible task for Tomsula... Even if he improves on this last seasons 8-8 record and gets into the playoffs as a wildcard, it still probably won't be enough for this fanbase... The Harbaugh era occupied most of the "window of opportunity" and the roster won't be as stacked as it had been the last four or five seasons... But that won't stop anyone from saying "I told you so" if the 49ers finish with anything less than an NFC championship appearance... Unfair or not, that will be the bar set for all the ridiculer's out there...

It is an almost impossible task. And one that was apparent when he lobbied for and was awarded the position. Not saying it's not a **** situation, but it's not like that should surprise him.

Like some of you have already said, lets give Jed and his new coach Jimmy T the benefit of the doubt here. Could the transition from Harbaugh have been handled better? Absolutely. But ultimately it's what takes place on the field that matters....As for the coaching staff, I think it is a solid one overall. Lots of experience. Tom Rathman returns to coach RBs, I really like Sparano as TEs coach - he is a Parcells guy. Eric Mangini I believe will turn out to be a heck of a DC - he is going back to his roots. He was the Pats DBs coach from 2000-04 and their DC in 2005. He's a Belichick disciple which certainly is a good thing - and the word is he will bring a more aggressive scheme to the defense which is very talented....Tim Lewis (DBs coach) if you recall was at one time a finalist for HC coach job I believe with Niners. He's also been a DC, and the Falcons secondary with him at the helm led the NFL in takeaways in 2012. He's also been pretty instrumental in developing Desmond Trufant. I am actually very excited about the offseason and the upcoming 2015 season.

Return to San Francisco 49ers
