InsideHoops VS RealGM

Post#1 » by Goudelock » Wed Feb 18, 2015 2:00 am

:banghead: Is this forum better than insidehoops? I hope so. I've only been on here for 15 days, so does RealGM have these things:

1: Stans. Especially Jordan stans. I despise all stans though.

2: The terms 'rent free', 'hold this L', and "navigational efficiency."

3: Talking about being Beta and Alpha. Especially when it comes to Kevin Durant/Russell Westbrook.:banghead:

I've been here since June so I am fairly new and I am happy with the board so far. There are a lot of knowledgeable posters here and so far all discussions are usually respectful even when there are disagreements. There is not a lot of "trolling' going on which is great also.

Stans- Yes. Hint: The stans have that players name in their username.

Alpha/Beta- No. Not at least in the Player comparisons board. You can go to the bodybuilding.com forums to get your daily fill Alpha/Beta nonsense.

ISH has some good posters, but you often have to sift through a bunch of troll posts. You'll still see stans and trolls here, but nothing like ISH. The main difference is RealGM has mods that actively enforce rules, while ISH is more of a free for all.

The trolls seem to outnumber the good posters 10-1. Ugh. And having browsed the GB (about 40 days left!), it seems like you can actually have a conversation about basketball.

The best part of this place is that there
Happen to be few trolls that like to
Enter conversations and dissing the
Guy on their supposed favorite team.
Unlike on the other site where
You have people that pretend to be
A part of a fanbase and then go and
Blast them so they don't get called
Out on their tendency to troll. It's
Very frustrating to deal with and
Exactly why I came to this site.

Many others don't have the quality of
Excellent moderating here and thus
In other forums you have cases like
Secret alternate accounts that they
Access after they have been suspended or
Terminated. This kind of shenanigans is
Rarely seen on realGM. This keeps people
On their good behavior so it helps
Lift the quality of conversation. So
Let us know what you think of it.

Nice meeting you.
I came here to do two things: get lost and slice **** up & I'm all out of directions.

If we're talking about one pparticular fan base from both forums, I've noticed this...

ISH Raptor fan base - Seems very liked, respected, and is often times called the best on their board.

RGM Raptor fan base - Seems very disliked, even hated, and seems to be very split to extremes on their representation as a fan base.

Just my take on it.

ISH is a place where good conversation is drowned out by trolling.
RGM is a place where trolling is drowned out by good conversation.

But really why are we even talking about another forum here?
There is no need for that.

I resent that lol. BB.com is my second favorite forum after this place. There are a bunch of idiots but it's just so funny

Agreed. There's no need to stoop to that level. I'm a member of other (non-basketball) forums which don't even allow talking about other forums to prevent forum wars.

Usually a forum is going to say it's better than another to begin with (what, someone's going to say, "No, the other board is better"?). All one has to do is spend time on a board and see for himself which one he prefers.
I remember your posts from the RPOY project, you consistently brought it. Please continue to do so, sir. This board needs guys like you to counteract ... worthless posters

They are different. If I want to have a laugh, I go to ISH, if I want to read about basketball, I come to RealGM.

Amazing though how some people hate on other forums. You go and register freely in one forum, then go and register in another forum too. You sometimes visit one forum, other times you visit the other forum, you might prefer one over the other but there is no need to hate on a freaking forum. People love to take sides.

Even though I have "Olajuwon" on my nick, I'm not a stan.

I just wanted to know if this forum was about discussing basketball, and not about trolling. And ISH can be funny at times, just not a place where you would have a serious discussion on hoops.

Not a contest, Inside Hoops has few quality posts. ProSportsDaily is 2nd best as it at least has an intelligence level close to RealGM's, the difference is outside of the general board area RealGM's other forums get far more traffic.

So speaking as mod here, I'm find with a thread like this popping up every now and again because the alternative is to look like we have some agenda here. The last time this came up we were in the middle of the Top 100 project, and while I forget the specific numbers I said something along these lines:

If you compare the same project on the 3 major basketball boards being discuss, what you saw is that the other two looked very similar but RealGM looked very different. RealGM had far more posts discussing every spot in the project to that point, and the average length of each post was considerably longer.

I'd say in a nutshell that's the difference specifically between RealGM's PC board and other boards alone the same lines: The discussion here is more studious. More academic, more well researched, etc.

That doesn't necessarily make it better though. It all depends on what you personally want. We get posters here sometimes complaining about the nerd-iness, and I just wonder why they choose to come here given that there are plenty of places to go where you don't have to deal with that.

2 other notes:
1. More generally, I get the impression that moderation is more strict around here than on other sites. Again, that might not be something you like.

2. By no means am I implying that RealGM has a monopoly on badass researchers and other basketball intellects on the internet. In my experience, every major site has folks like that. I think there's a more supportive culture of this here though, and I think that's why you tend to see the top posters from other sites dip their toes in on RealGM too even if they don't want to abandon the site they made their reputation with, whereas the opposite I'd say is less true.

ISH right now is better for a laugh, but kind of a mess if you're looking for real substance. Some posters there are incredibly knowledgable, though, and imo I like civil discussion on that site more than on RGM. Analysis is based more on what actually happened on the court, rather than numbers trying to summarize what happened. Also the more relaxed tone allows you to word your stuff a bit differently, I'd say. The PC board is easily my favorite basketball board, though, and I've seen some of the better ISH posters here, too...

Trolls had always been a problem but at this point that forum is flooded with drooling retards who like to engage more in roasting each other than having a discussion.

RealGM is a lot more accessible, because on ISH you kind of need to get to know the forum's inside jokes first. You also need some experience to sift through the trolls, although they aren't exactly hiding these days. The level of stupidity on RealGM's general board is still on the mountain top, though. For as many trolls as ISH has, they aren't as plain dumb as the posters on the General Board are. Lol

RealGM is best basketball forum IMO. I go on reddit just for highlight videos and tweets and all that nonsense I can digest in 2 minutes, but way too many 15 year olds over there.

Inside hoops when I browse there there's just a huge circle jerk of trolling or random stupid inside jokes. And people there are pretty behind in terms of basketball analysis (just using box score stats or PER as a 'strong' argument).

I think the most intelligent basketball discussion happens on APBR forums. They have a couple of real analytics guys, and I met the admin of that site by chance. He's been watching NBA since the 50s, and he told me there are a few NBA analytic hires that used to be APBR members. But that forum is a little too square and this one is kind of fun. Just my thoughts. I think RealGM is the best balance of the more active basketball forums.
