Yeah, I don't really care about that and I still wouldn't pay guys based on 2016. I think Knight is probably worth around $10 million. If Kidd is convinced that he can continue to mold him, get him to protect the ball more and improve his decision making then I'd probably go up to something like $12.5 million. No way I'd go beyond that though.
I just have a feeling someone is going to give him a max offer sheet now. Not sure who, but the hype train seems to be rolling for Knight around the league.
You're a markets guy, right?
If in 2016-2017, a max deal starts at $16 mil/year, and somebody offered you a clone of Knight named Krandon Bright for 4 years/55 million (1 year into his old max) that isn't a good deal? You wouldn't take that if you're convinced that he's a good player?
The $90 million dollar cap number is still just a projection. I would still pay guys based on what they are worth under the current CBA until the new CBA comes around. Who isn't convinced Knight is a good player, by the way? It's a matter of fit and if he is a good enough player to be worth a max contract.
Also, if the new max is $16 million a year... then I don't think Knight is a very good value at $13.75 million a year. He is a good, not great, player who plays the most talent loaded position in the league. Do I want to keep him? Yeah. Do I think we should do all Michael Redd crazy contract and give him as much as we possibly can? No.
