I feel like Detroit got Jackson for a steal (really just DJ, who's a nice back up but not as valuable as RJ) and Utah gave up Kanter for just the ability to dump Novak? And they had to take on Perkins. I get he wanted out, but why not do an RJ for Kanter deal?? Is there a pick going to Utah that I'm missing?

See link in my post above. (The byline of the article has been updated *again*, saying that the Jazz also receive the rights to Tibor Pleiss from OKC. Obviously things are still a little muddled.)

I think I really like this for OKC. They remade their bench big time today and with the previous Waiters deal. Really well done. Curious to see which guys stick as I think they have one or two guys too many on the roster now.

Has there been more clarification on whether Utah gets a 1st? That basically makes or breaks the deal for them.

Are people thinking that the Thunder are going to be bringing back Kanter next year?

I assumed it was a rental because he likely gets paid too much this summer, but I'm watching some of the talking heads discussing the deals and they're saying that they assume OKC has decided they'd be willing to resign him this summer.

OKC fans are you down with bringing Kanter back next year for decent money?

Obviously it depends on how things play out for the rest of the season, but at first blush are you thinking rental or extension?

I think for what they gave up its still good even if he's a rental. I don't know how they can afford to bring him back at a big number next year, but maybe ownership has decided to pay tax for 2 years and then count on the big TV money to fit it all in.

Finally Thunder has some actual depth. Reggie is way overrated. Kd might have loss Perk but he gets his college buddy DJ. Did the Thunder get under the tax? I guess they'll trade Lamb close to the draft.

Forget where I read it, but OKC plans to try to bring Kanter back long term and pair him with Adams. Which I love. But the market will probably dictate the likelihood of that.

This is probably the deepest team OKC has ever had hands down, even if they do still need a starting 2.

Also, OKC is about 2.7 million into the tax. They are going to be in it this year. Would have liked to see Novak shipped out with Lamb for a prot. 2nd, but probably wasn't enough time to get it done.

Luxury tax is based on payroll on the team's last game of the season. They might still trade Lamb but it will no longer affect their 2014-15 luxury tax either way. The only way they can reduce their tax bill now is if they negotiate lowered buyouts (or if they waive someone and he is claimed outright, but that's unlikely).

Utah will ALSO get a 1st and a 2nd rounder. No word on whose or what the protections are.

Interesting that Presti was able to use his pipeline as part of a trade. And the news guys in SLC should learn how to spell Tibor's name.

I don't even really hate that for them. I hate Waiters but Westbrook will play some minutes there still next to Augustin plus Morrow. The West is so stupid. I feel like my Mavericks have gotten so much better since last season and yet here we are basically in the same spot as last year. If Durant and Westbrook are healthy for the playoffs some top-seeded team is getting a horrible matchup.

Interesting questions. Presti has loaded up on young centers with Kanter and Adams. Not to mention Mr McGary. But given Presti's MO I'd suspect he's all about keeping Kanter. I'm looking forward to seeing how this all sorts out on the court.

Who's pick is it? Any news yet?
Never thought to my self that what makes or breaks Thunder playoff chances is Kanter.
Kanter needs ball on offense to be effective. He'll probably come of the bench behind Adams. What about McGary? I thought his play warranted extnded playtime, but now he might be marginalized.
Defense will be very iffy with Kanter replacing Perks minutes. Perk is really only useful against Dwight, Gasol, Bogut, but Kanter can't defend anyone.
Also, I'm gonna miss Perk.

I think it's an amazing deal for OKC regardless, which just speaks to how big a win it is for Presti. Any time you can bring a guy in and it be a rental or long term acquisition and you still win either way, that's some Executive of the Year type of wheeling and dealing right there.

That makes it a ton better for Detroit and not as great for OKC. Need to see the protection 1st. I'm guessing 2017 1st.

yeah makes it make more sense for Detroit. I still like it for OKC if they are keeping Kanter longterm.

I have been hard on Presti for his conservative nature, but I got to give it to him for how aggressive he's been this year. And I really like the parts he got back today.

WIndhorst (ESPN) now reporting:

Utah gets future protected 1st from OKC, 2nd rounder from Detroit, rights to Pleiss, Perkins, Grant Jerrett

This makes a little more sense now. A future first from OKC isn't worth a whole lot, but we got a 1st, a 2nd, a young player, and dumped Novak as well. Fine with that if we weren't bringing Kanter back.

If Gores wants to spend the money, the Pistons can sign a near a max player next summer while Monroe & Jackson are on their cap holds, then resign both Jackson & Monroe.

As for Jennings, the guy has a torn ACL and is expiring next year. Hopefully he makes it back, but who knows what level he can return to.

It really makes a lot more sense now. I think the worry of Kanter being offered too much this summer scared a lot of suitors away because unless you're prepared to commit to him he could very likely be a rental.

I think it's a reasonable haul for Utah now. Not ideal, but still not too shabby for a guy that wasn't going to be with the team next year anyway.

Still like if for OKC. Glad to see Presti being ready to make moves now at the expense of his precious future draft picks. I think this is going to work out well for them.
