If you don't believe the young players you have will ever become the cornerstones required to be a title contender, why would you waste years and resources trying to assemble a team around them?

Imagine if the Sixers go this route:

draft Okafor (or Townes or some other stud)
trade Lakers' 1st (top 5 protected this year, top 3 next year) + another 1st or two for rights to D'Angelo Russell
sneak into playoffs in 2015/16 (I expect Embiid to take the league by storm, and Russell/Okafor/Noel are studs)
sign Durant, Conley, and Love in summer 2016

Their core would be amazing at that point:

Conley
Russell
Durant
Love/Noel/Saric
Embiid/Okafor

(rounded out with several other 1st rounders, some cheap ring-chasing vets, and some young role players developed by Philly)

Potential dynasty. And wow would they have a ton of trade chips.

If they need to clear extra cap space in 2016 to sign all 3 FA's, they could trade one or more of their studs on rookie deals (Embiid/Okafor/Noel/Russell/Saric) for future picks, thereby clearing capspace while retaining value. Or they could keep all their young studs and not sign one of the FA's (I'm looking at you, Love), in which case their core would still be badass:

Conley
Russell
Durant
Saric/Noel
Embiid/Okafor

So what are the Sixers doing? IMO, they're giving themselves a legit chance to assemble an all-time great team and win a long string of champtionships.

They hit the lottery, inflated his #s with minutes in a fast paced O, but lost the prize when KJ and his agent turned down the normal 2nd round contract. Now you're paying for those inflated #s in restricted free agency. He'll obviously hope the next 2nd rounder accepts the Parsons' contract.

Who cares? You have to pay somebody.

Overall I like the Brandon Knight MCW swap for the Bucks.

However knowing the Bucks could have gotten the Lakers pick kind of pisses me off.

Whatever the Sixers are doing, they did it right in this trade.

Sure, then they can waste 10 more years trading for potential cornerstones which you speak of. By your logic, then every team should be dumping every non-cornerstone player less than 2 years into their professional careers for more draft picks.

Hinkie has enough draft picks to continue to build his team. Who said he has to build it around KJ and MCW? One's a rookie and the other is a sophomore. You don't just dump those young players with great promise for complete unknowns.

KJ Mcdaniels was a free agent after this season. He likely could have went anywhere he wanted and they probably would have had to overpay to keep him around. They're acquiring picks, I think they might be on the right track.

The 76ers are predicting that MCW will never be a good efficient player so they assessed and git rid of him.

The door will revolve until they get pieces they like

Cavs will offer a future pick for the guy the Sixers draft this year.

The Sixers would have been able to make McDaniels a restricted free agent with a one-year, $1.2 million qualifying offer. They controlled his future.

MCW great promise...

It's going to be humorous witnessing this boards perceptions of MCW change now that he's been traded.

To clarify, I do believe MCW does have great promise, which I have since he was drafted.

The Lakers pick isn't going to fall out of the top 5. They better pray that the Lakers don't sign some big FA to help them win some games next season. They'll have Randle/Kobe back plus whoever they decide to draft. I'm guessing next season the pick will be somewhere along the 11-18th range, right about where they drafted MCW.

Yeah MCW was a good deal, that LAL pick is more valuable.

KJ McDaniels is questionable, but like others said, we don't know what is going on behind the scenes where KJ might have said he absolutely didn't want to play here next year. And if they resign him by matching a large contract, he's a bitter player when guys like Covington and Grant are similar and are getting paid peanuts, it's not a good mix. And/or, they really like Cannan.

MCW? Maybe injury concerns, he's been having reoccurring issues with the shoulder that he had surgery on, shooting/finishing/ & turnover concerns & the fact he's an older sophomore heading towards 24 years old. Nothing is set until the franchise guy(s) hit the floor & show they can be that guy (right now expectations are Embiid will be that guy) so until Embiid hits the floor next season & validates this, why not try & upgrade positions while at the same time bettering our own picks position. KJ's biggest issue is his contract, he is on a one year deal, considering the flashy athleticism/highlights he's shown, he's likely going to get a overvalued contract offer that the Sixers rather not have to deal with.

Umm, I don't know if anybody else has realized this, but the 6ers are obviously building around Jason Richardson. Seriously, just look - still on the team!

I'm still trying to figure out WTH happened when I turned my back for a couple of hours, but I wouldn't be surprised if part of it had something to do with his mom. That sounds weird, but she's been rather...vocal.
