Paul Millsap talks FA with the NY media

Post#1 » by theatlfan » Mon Feb 16, 2015 4:25 pm

Saw this over the weekend and figured I'd go ahead and start the thread this morning...

So apparently Friday and Saturday media sessions were all about NY reporters fishing for a "big name FA will consider [NYK or BRK] in FA" stories and they asked every possible FA what they thought of NY and if they'd consider playing for the Knicks. Paul Millsap was the one who seems to be quoted the most often across the interwebz. The money quote for the media has been this:
[Millsap on the welcoming ATL fan base]It’s a good thing, but I’m not one to base my decision off emotions. I base my decisions off of everything else. Where our team is at, can I grow with this team, how’s the coach, how’s the community? There’s a lot of things that factor into it besides emotions. It’s a good place. I consider myself a guy who could fit in anywhere.“
One of several sources

On the one hand, it encourages teams to bid on him since he isn't likely to give a hometown discount but will give a discount based on the right situation; on the other, it makes it clear that we're the overwhelming favorite unless we completely cr@p the bed. In every factor listed, we are obviously a huge positive already - situation? we're competing for a 1 seed in the East and possibly a ring; growth? we made you into an AS; coach? he's on the short list for CotY in his 2nd season; community? just talked about a welcoming fan base.

Now, I didn't expect Millsap to be particularly media savvy. He came from a small(-ish) town in Louisana and played at a small college there. He's 1st real exposure to the media was playing for UTH where Salt Lake City isn't exactly a media Mecca. Still, it's hard to parse that quote and say that there's a real shot right that he would leave ATL but also that he wouldn't either. Kudos to Millsap's doublespeak!

Yeah, I've heard Knick fans speculate ad nauseam that they could steal Millsap from the Hawks with a big offer this summer. They probably could have before this season. But with NYK being historically bad and the Hawks doing so well, I can't see him signing up to essentially spend the remaining years of his peak Basketball playing years in purgatory.

It will be difficult for Paul to turn down a huge money offer from another team if we try to lowball him. I don't really know where he'll sign next year. But I think it'd take a near-max deal to get him to NY. And I can't see Phil Jackson doling out that kind of money to a 2nd/3rd tier player.

The whole ownership situation if anything is going to play the biggest part in all this. It's a no brainer to resign with the team right now but who's to say the new owners may want to blow the team up and do a full rebuild if the Hawks don't win the championship this year.

While I agree with the "the new owner can do what he wants" point, I can't see a new owner tearing everything down either. We've been a distant #3 pro sports team in town (we might not make the top 10 if you include college) for years up until this season and now the Hawks are the buzz of the ATL sports scene. Any new owner will be a business man and we can count on a few things - 1 of which being that he won't be looking to tear apart a $$ maker when it's a proven loss to do so. There isn't much we can count on after the ownership change, but I think we can agree that is one thing we can.

Well that would be stupid. The first time the Hawks are relevant since Nique so let's tear this down and rebuild instead of just adding to the good season so far. I wouldn't want that person as an owner. Philips would be empty again.

Return to Atlanta Hawks
